2015 MLB Season - Let's Play Two!
Ted O'Reilly replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, I disagree. I think they've been KIKKENAZZ! Whuh? That's s'posed tuh be slugging...but also KIKKENAZZ! I am getting to two games in the next week, Sunday VS the Tigers, Tuesday agin the Indians (the team of my youth, but I opted out when the 111-43 record was erased 4-0 in the Series). Waited 'til 1977 to regain the love... (Yes, I'm old.) -

It's already out of date, but the Jays have been SUGGING! http://music.cbc.ca/#%21/blogs/2015/8/Some-genius-synched-every-Blue-Jays-home-run-of-2015-to-Johnny-Cashs-Gods-Gonna-Cut-You-Down -
Agreed. Seems to be the leader in tape editing, as well as re-issues...

C'mon, it's EASY to keep House. It's all on DVD now.

Xanadu Master Edition Series - Elemental Music
Ted O'Reilly replied to dougcrates's topic in Re-issues
If any of the recordings were done by Richard Alderson (I think that's his name -- I've been trying to forget it) the piano will sound lousy. -
Amazing site! Beautifully thought out, very usable... Thanks for the link, Miles65.

Going through some old cassettes last night (yup, cassettes!) and found a compilation of Kenny Kersey sessions. I don't have a machine plugged in so I didn't listen, but I recall how much I've enjoyed his stylings over the years...

jazz musicians who couldn't/cant read music
Ted O'Reilly replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Erroll Garner. If you're a jazz fan you should know that. I'm feeling pesky today, but c'mon...two mistakes in one name? -
A couple of Canadians who aren't well-enough recognized: Mike Murley and Phil Dwyer. Oh, and Perry White and Kelly Jefferson and Alex Dean and Rick Wilkins and.... geez. You Yanks should look up North now and then. ...and Art Ellefson.

"ditch the dirt" Isn't the phrase "dish the dirt"? 'Cause if you ditch it, you're NOT dishing it, which he isn't doing. Or something....

...and there are lots of clubs where the artists pay to play! Then pay the sound & lighting guys on top of that. It's all to get "exposure".

A wonderful player. Such a sudden shock...

I don't know if it's in print these days, but there's a duet CD by Don Friedman with Don Thompson on bass that's a good one. (Full Disclosure: I recorded it.) It comes from two concert evenings in Ontario, and finds two top-rank players who enjoyed working with each other, challenging a bit, co-operating a lot. "Opus D'Amour" Sackville SKCD2-3058, April 12, 13, 1992.

But is it gluten-free?

I had heard of Schmidlin's passing... Have you any idea of how that might affect the label? Was is pretty much a one-man show, or does it have a future with some other leadership? I met him once, and found him to be a very nice man, and much involved in jazz in all aspects.

Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen on Jazz From Blue Lake
Ted O'Reilly replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I just came home half an hour ago from introducing and hearing Ingrid as a featured soloist with her sister Christine's Montreal-based Jazz Orchestra at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. An invigorating performance by all, with Ingrid as a standout of course. She's among the really good trumpeters playing today... (Compelling tenor man Andre Leroux was outstanding, too...) -

Erroll Garner’s “Concert By the Sea” as 3-CD Box by Sony Legacy
Ted O'Reilly replied to RiRiIII's topic in Re-issues
Interesting... This is not the original cover pic (nor the CD version). The original LP version had a white woman, and so did the different CD offer yet another white woman. I wonder who this model is? Might it be (aptly) Geri Allen? (A Toronto sidebar: the next gig the Garner trio did after the Carmel concert was here, at the Colonial Tavern the next week. I wonder if they drove across the country to get here? Air travel was still a great luxury in 1955.)- 135 replies

I wonder how many copies ARE needed for the premium.... Might it be possible to go to the rights holder and request a custom order? Years back, a local Toronto radio station had a very good retail sideline of releasing compilation LPs of the sort of Dinner Music they featured. All were from the catalogue of Columbia Records, who custom-manufactured for the station. The broadcaster selected the music much as they would programme for their listeners.

Album Cover With A Woman / Women In A Bottle
Ted O'Reilly replied to soulpope's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I might call that glass container a "jar" rather than a "bottle". -
I've heard pretty much all of this release, and have a couple of remarks... First, the sound is very fine, pretty much the best my old ears can recall. It's always subjective, but the sound on this set should satisfy anyone. One particular thing really jumped out: the single Commodore session at Liederkranz Hall (Session O in their discography -- November 14, 1940) is an 'oddball' in a couple of ways. First, that it's at Liederkranz, while most were done at Brunswick and Decca studios, and some later ones at WOR Studios. To my ears, the difference is amazing with the four tracks suddenly jumping out of the speakers with a clarity and resonance the other tracks just don't have. Most are very dry. It's the same with the late '20s Victor recordings of Duke Ellington at Liederkranz -- a spacy fullness that isn't heard on other Ducal discs of the period. I know that World Transcriptions Library (Decca bought the company in 1943) did a lot of sessions there as did other labels, but one wonders why it wasn't used a lot more. To my ears, the sound is simply that much better. Another thing about that particular session is that it's somehow "Sponsored". The credit is given as EDDIE CONDON AND HIS BAND SPONSORED BY -- COLIN CAMPBELL but there is no other reference to Mr. Campbell in the notes, and I don't believe I've ever seen that name before. Why would that session need/have a sponsor? Was it the presence of one 'Maurice', aka Fats Waller, who is on no other Commodore session?

Miles Davis and Mitch Mitchell - really?
Ted O'Reilly replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Who is this Miles Davis Mitch Mitchell you speak of? Any relation to Mitch Miller, or Guy Mitchell? -
I see that "String Along With Basie" is included in this series. That album wasn't part of the Mosaic sets, probably because it was not by the Basie band. It's a delightful record, though...
