I recall Peter was always unhappy with that tasteless album cover. Let's hope it doesn't start another "Album Covers With..." thread.

Shouldn't this be called "The Ashes Is Underway"? ;-)

I'm sure many of you are familiar with vibist Peter Appleyard, who passed away Wednesday evening... http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2013/07/18/arts-jazz-musician-peter-appleyard-dead.html

...so you can skip the record-cleaning machine and do it all right on the turntable. But you still have to attach the Shop-Vac, on 'wet' mode. Sometimes the noise from it overcomes the gain from stopping TT rumble. YMMV.

A "real jazz" portion of the somewhat underwhelming Toronto Jazz Festival is a series I'll have the pleasure of introducing shortly, and it features Houston Person smack dab in the middle. On Monday June 24, the hosting Canadian Jazz Quartet (Gary Benson, gtr; Frank Wright, vibes; Duncan Hopkins, bass and drummer Don Vickery) will welcome Harry Allen. On Tuesday, it's Ken Peplowski, Houston on the Wednesday, Randy Sandke on Thursday and this particular run will have Allan Vache on Friday the 28th. They'll be at the Home Smith Bar of the elegant Old Mill Inn in Toronto. More information at http://torontojazz.com/content/home-smith-bar-old-mill-inn

Are there any box bargains currently available?
Ted O'Reilly replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Still a tremendous bargan, And not available for a decent price on Amazon.com US site. I have this, and it's fine stuff, generally speaking. The 35/20 confusion is that it's 35 original albums, on 20 CDs... -

Just to follow up, the party for Phil last night was a wonderful event, with about a hundred invited guests at the Canadian Music Centre. Phil and family were in attendance, and Phil did what he does so well -- played clarinet, spontaneously composing with David Braid at the piano. BTW, the CMC's website offers some Nimmons recordings, of his performances, and compositions played by others in both jazz and classical genres... http://www.musiccentre.ca/recordings/search/quicksearch_process?keywords=phil+nimmons&op=&form_build_id=form-adc78a2d015bd256dc34d06c79d9a2ba&form_id=products_quick_search_form

I'm leaving in the next few minutes to attend a Birthday Party for Phil. He has a gig on Thursday, playing with a terrific young pianist, David Braid. They'll be completely spontaneous...no set chords, keys, tempo, nuthin'! And the audience will love it: instant composition! Who'd a thunk it of a 90-year-old? (Clunky, see if you can track down a newer Nimmons quartet release on Sackville, The Sands of Time...

Am at this moment listening to a new Pieranunzi issue on CamJazz, "Live at The Village Vanguard". Recently issued, but recorded almost three years back, with Marc Johnson and Paul Motian. Eight tracks, half Pieranunzi originals. Gonna hafta hear it a couple of times before I decide to award it any number of stars, but I've liked his work in the past. I guess this will be a partner to the earlier CD with Johnson and Joe LaBarbera, also at the VV, also linking Pieranunzi to the venue, and to Bill Evans' work there.

Very sad news -- especially at such a young age. He surely had another couple of decades more of great music to offer us. I'll have to dig out my tapes of him playing solo in Toronto...

Friedrich Gulda "Musician Of Our Time" (MPS)
Ted O'Reilly replied to Daniel A's topic in Discography
Just FYI, if you're both referring to the MPS release (first issued on Saba) "Music For 4 Soloists and Band No. 1", it was released in 2011 as a single CD, MPS/Universal 06025 2759306. -

Columbia Records to sponsor F1 Lotus racecar team.
Ted O'Reilly replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
...and are fueled by Unicorn's tears. I wonder what Columbia thinks they'll get out of this. Some marketing people I know are scratching their heads over this sponsorship. -
Manfred Selchow's "Profoundly Blue", a bio-discographical scrapbook of Edmond Hall (my favourite clarinetist) (well, some days it's PeeWee), reproduced a Down Beat article for the 1947/02/08 event. it reports that "Louis, supported by Ed Hall's six piece band, and his own large group for the last quarter of the show, turned out 25 pieces of jazz to lusty applause from NY critics and a three-quarters house." The book indicates that as many as 13 tracks have been released, on lots of different labels, even on V-Disc. A cursory glance indicates the recordings come from the first half of the concert, if the event's programme can be believed.

Isn't that what Troubadours did, centuries back? Told the news/stories of their time in song? -
Now THAT's research...going to wave forms to identify dubbed-in applause! Wow!

That site helps, though you'll note it doesn't actually say Bennett joins with Brubeck, though we can assume that tracks 8 to 13 are that combination. Further, "Tony Bennett with Ralph Sharon, piano; Hal Gaylord, bass; and Billy Exner, drums" has two names wrong: Gaylor and Exiner. At least it doesn't say Sharin'...

I had to laugh
Ted O'Reilly replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm completely ignorant about football/soccer -- could there be 15 players dressed per team in a game? That'd make it 'a tribute' package. In Canada, we get eggs by the dozen, and there are (in some big stores) packages of 18. You want just 6? Some shops may cut a 12-pack in half for you, and charge 60% of the price... -
Ummm, ummmm, c'mon -- how many letters????

I received in Toronto today 2 copies of 3-CD sets from Amazon UK, shipping and handling costing 4.07 pounds, or 6.47 C$. I also received a notice that a 3-DVD set was on the way from the Amazon US, at 14.29 C$, shipping and handling. Somehow doesn't seem right. Some of the Amazon dealers charge a "pre-collection of Canadian duties", but there are no Canadian duties. All these charges turn up after you've done all the work of ordering, adding to the pissed-off levels.
