  1. Agreed re: Movie Mars. Of all the companies mentioned, they're the worst at listing items they don't really have.
  2. VAO - The Minimalism of Erik Satie and Bley/Peacock/Koglmann - Annette are out now.
  3. Ellis Larkins Decca/Storyville?
  4. Oh, I meant nothing by it. Those are just some personal favorite discs and I can't imagine letting them go myself. But to each his own, of course!
  5. Ha! I liked the album very much back when, but never that much! & the Gastr Del Sol is indeed a winner.
  6. I can't find takers anywhere for this stuff, but I can't help but feel it's of SOME value, so before slogging my way over to Ebay, I'll just see if there any interest at all here. Shipping will be 2.00 per title, less for multiple items. LPs Wreckless Eric 10" - $8 Jason Molina - Let Me Go ... - $10 The Prisoners - A Taste of Pink! - $20 UK Squeeze (red vinyl) - $8 The Crazy World of Arthur Brown - $8 Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock - $8 CDs Fred Frith - Guitar Solos - $8 Au Pairs - Sense & Sensuality - $8 Gastr Del Sol - Upgrade & Afterlife - $5 dump (Yo La Tengo's James McNew) - that skinny motherfucker with the high voice? - $12 Lifter Puller (pre-Hold Steady) - Fiestas & Fiascos - $10
  7. Ack, please tell me you have back-up copies of the Cecil Taylor discs!
  8. I finally got the Best Of disc in the mail and love it. I'll certainly spring for at least one of these.
  9. http://shop.ebay.com/essingejazz1001/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340 No affiliation w/ seller, just something I stumbled upon. Some amazing deals here.
  10. You know, once when I was getting some fillings done (which was not so much painful and very, very uncomfortable -- and slightly painful) I concentrated on some pieces from Tony Williams' Lifetime album which proved a nice distraction. I would recommend that one.
  11. #699, Ran Blake/Steve Lacy/Ricky Ford - Something to Live For: The George Gershwin Songbook is now available from JazzLoft http://www.jazzloft.com/p-52888-that-certain-feeling-george-gershwin-songbook.aspx Now, #698 (Sun Ra) was the previous release. #700 is Braxton's Willisau 1991 ... fingers crossed. edit: It appears that #667. ICP Orchestra - Jubilee Varia is also out.
  12. Thanks. I have the Monk, Powell, Jacquet and JJ Johnson discs, but will absolutely check out the others. The James Moody, Dexter Gordon, Diz/Savoy and Coleman Hawkins (as per papsrus' post) have been on my "to buy" list for quite a while.
  13. A 2CD set, very widely available and modestly priced. Enjoy! http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Rca-Victor-Recordings-1947-1949/dp/B000002WRX/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1285615574&sr=1-1
  14. Thanks for the recs! I do have the Prestige First sessions, Dameron/Navarro, Gillespie and Marmarosa material, but I will certainly check out the others. Oh, and yes, you cannot go wrong with Diz's Complete RCA Victor Recordings.
  15. Vague, perhahps, but I'm wondering if anyone could direct my attention to more recordings from this era. I'm thinking particularly of things like Stan Getz's Roost recordings, Sonny Stitt's early Prestige material, Gene Ammons' Young Jug etc. Lo-fi, 2-3 minute small group jazz from the late 40s/early 50s that bridges the gap from bop to hard bop or mainstream. There's just something so perfect about this approach to me ... I can't get enough.
  16. I'll download. Hopefully I'll actually have something to contribute this time around!
  17. Or sing it, if you've seen Spike Lee's Katrina doc.
  18. Hm, I wish I'd known that before I dropped $18 on a CD from Italy on Ebay a few weeks ago. Needless to say it hasn't shown up ...
  19. Also, if you like Dolphy, you can't miss Mal Waldron's The Quest and Ron Carter's Where?. Though the former is superior, both feature essentially the same band with Dolphy on alto, bass clarinet and even Bb clarinet; Ron Carter on bass & cello, and George Duvivier playing second bass. Very unique and wonderful.
  20. Gene Krupa Trio w/ Charlie Ventura - "Body & Soul" Great!!
  21. Speaking of this great footage that he mostly failed to use well, is there sound to go along with the video of Ornette and Don Cherry, and is it from the Five Spot in 1959? 'Cause seeing that and not hearing it just made me angry.
  22. Gerry Hemingway's quartets and quintets - cello, trombone, clarinet/bass clarinet John Surman's solo recordings - soprano/baritone sax, bass clarinet, synthesizers Cecil Taylor's Unit Structures - oboe, twinned basses, bass clarinet Oscar Pettiford's octet & big band - cello Chico Hamilton Quintet - cello, guitar, clarinet Bud Shank & Bob Cooper's flute & oboe albums Dave Leibman has done a lot of work on various wood flutes Arthur Blythe has lead many interesting groups that include tuba and cello. See Blythe Spirit or Spirits in the Field. Illinois Jacquet was known to improvise on the bassoon ("Caravan" on The King is an example) John Carter with Bobby Bradford or on his own - clarinet Andrew Hill has recorded evocatively with two basses, strings, organ and clarinet Music of the third stream: The Modern Jazz Quartet - Third Stream Music, The Birth of the Third Stream, George Russell w/ Bill Evans - Brandeis Jazz Festival,John Lewis Presents a Concert of Contemporary Music, Jazz Abstractions, Ran Blake's Something to Live For, Dolphy's Vintage Dolphy ... though this may start to wear thin ... Any number of drummerless trios - Jimmy Giuffre, Ahmad Jamal, Tal Farlow, Nat King Cole, Bley/Peacock/Koglmann, Motian/Lovano/Frissell And, of course, specifically: Anthony Braxton and Henry Threadgill. More generally: AACM, BAG, UGMAA et al. Also, check out the catalogues of Hat Art, Soul Note/Black Saint, ECM and other Euro labels for loads more examples. Though these may stray farther away from "jazz" proper into the world of "improvised music", I think you'll find that there's much more like this to be found.
  23. Hm, I got rid of most of the jazz on my queue and loaded it with classical, but I get messages almost daily about titles that have gone out of stock. Also, the Nat Cole Transcriptions box is now gone. I knew it was a bad idea to sleep on that one. Hmph.
