  2. Indeed a good price! I can't recommend it enough, really a jewel of the series ...
  3. RIP. I will spin At Judson Hall today.

    Anthony Braxton

People always have to oversell stuff. Obviously they're all legends and masters, so why try to qualify it in some pointless, breathless way?
  5. Seems to be "a history of jazz on Columbia in the LP era", or like, a sampler of Columbia's diverse roster of jazz legends. Of course, there are the RCA titles mixed in ...
  6. Earlier today: Barnaby Promo, different (superior, I think) art Wonderful!
  7. I guess it's better than the $100 the guy on Amazon wants. Strange to think of a mere OJC being "worth" so much.
  8. Dusty Groove currently has this in stock for $34.99 http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=5d54vbjw29&ref=browse.php&refQ=cat%3D5%26amp;format%3Dcd%26amp;new_status%3Dused%26amp;page%3D1
  9. Yes, the increasing presence of cut outs and budget imports in what few stores remain is indeed sad and infuriating. There is an FYE here--literally the only place to buy music in town-- that has nothing but terrible Euro budget titles in their miniscule jazz section. The rest of the store isn't any better ... mostly cheesy rock cut-outs from the 90s and early 00s. At least Lou's is asking a reasonable price for cassettes! As they've disappeared, I've noticed people pricing them for what I feel are absurd amounts. Anything over a dollar is robbery, if you ask me. In fact, there's an ebay seller that is hawking many (admittedly obscure or OOP) jazz tapes for $20 or more. Please.
  10. Sign me up for a download!
  11. Yes, that's what I mean. I have the Everest Jazz Immortal, but I'd like to know all there is.
  12. Gonna make my way through six sides of the Columbia Basic Library of Great Jazz. A mixture of the familiar and some more obscure stuff.
  13. Thanks for the link. I've always had trouble untangling pre-Blue Note Monk appearances.
  14. I passed up that Bix & Tram one a couple months ago and to my dying day I will never know why. It was beat up, but was also only $6. Hmph.
  15. I'll say it again, someone buy it!!
  16. I highly recommend the Ran Blake, which is OOP.
  17. Anthony Braxton and Stuart Gilmour doing a soprano/piano duet on "Rosetta" from 14 Compositions (Traditional) 1996. What a wonderful and singular album in the man's discography! It starts out in a very polite mode before Anthony rips it apart like only he can. When he comes back to the head (on a dime!) he goes back to playing straight, but laces it with out-phrasing. Love it.
  18. As I type, I'm enjoying this fine collection curated by Scott Yanow. Hard to come by, but worth the hunt (though there's nothing particularly rare included): (though note Mr. Bechet is playing his soprano on the cover )
  19. Indeed, if only. I'd like to think he would have played it more had he lived longer.
  20. Some of Bill's personal record collection is being listed on Ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/chantez802/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340
  21. The article says 15 CDs, which is not bad at all. By Mosaic's current pricing, it'd run a little over $250.
  22. I might recommend setting a reserve for Bells rather than start the bidding so high. That is a truly valuable record and is just the kind of thing reserve was made for. If the item really is of great worth and scarcity, then you will not have a problem attracting bidders. I've seen rare Beatles records start out under $20 and go for thousands. Mr. Gould is right, I think: auctions that start lower just do better. I think this is because it gives people time to bid. If you start say, an OOP 6-LP Mosaic set at $220, you might sell it and you might not. If you do, there will be very few bids, maybe even just one. But if you start it at $19.99, there may be a dozen or more bids and you'll still sell it for that or more.
  23. Love that Osby!
  24. Just a heads up, I'll be gearing my November Blindfold test toward the clarinet, which is also my favorite jazz instrument. Here's hoping I can stump people a bit! As far as favorites go, Benny Goodman is definitely at the top of my list, his small groups in particular. Just dazzling. I love Jimmy Giuffre and anyone influenced by his approach. Barney Bigard and George Lewis ... I won't even bother getting more specific than that. Seeing clarinet in the instrumentation is enough to get me to purchase just about anything.
  25. A great little film from (I believe) 1995 called "A Portrait of Mal Waldron", with performances and interviews by Mal with Steve Lacy, Reggie Workman, Jeanne Lee, Andrew Cyrille and Max Roach. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsTUe0_v03k You can find the other parts through the first.
