New Coleman Hawkins Mosaic big box coming
colinmce replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Interesting. I was just looking at Mosaic Brochure #5 from I believe 1988 and among the future projects they mentioned (Shorty Rogers, Cecil Taylor, the Commodores, Ike Quebec) were two that never came to fruition: a Wardell Gray set and a Coleman Hawkins. -

Are there any box bargains currently available?

Mine too. What a harrowing ordeal -
Just grabbed the whole set off ebay for $25. I have some of the music of course, but these look like they'll make for fine listening and will look pretty good on the shelf, too!

I finally sent an email asking about the package. They said they'd get back to me on Monday. -
Indeed. I might even suggest supplementing it w/ this: http://www.amazon.com/Musical-Romance-Billie-Holiday/dp/B0026OIBOU/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1298742065&sr=8-4 Material from the box, but very nice to have on its own (cheap, too).

For my part, the Columbias without a doubt. Nothing wrong with the Verve material, but I do prefer earlier Billie to later. Like JohnL states above, I just could not live without these recordings. They're among my absolute favorites in all of jazz. I listen to them on a monthly basis. Pres, Teddy, Benny ... imo, along with Goodman's RCA small groups, the Ellington Units and Lester Young's combos they are the apex of small group swing.

I recently spun Six Compositions: Quartet recorded in 1981 for Antilles w/ Mark Helias, Anthony Davis and Ed Blackwell. I would certainly recommend it to a fan who doesn't own it. Very accessible stuff and some of the most... textured? work I've heard from him. Braxton sticks to alto and plays through some of his 70s quartet series of compositions.

Me too. I got a little carried away last week now I'm kind of biting my nails 'til payday.

Hm. I imagine mine, sitting lonely in a massive pile waiting to be "inspected". I suppose if I don't get it in another month I'll really just assume I'm screwed. -

FS: Mosaic Select #23 - Andrew Hill Solo
colinmce replied to colinmce's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Another price reduction. -
I recently bought all of Steve Lacy's RCA-Novus records, along with Sortie/Disposability and NY Capers & Quirks. Looking forward to dipping into these. Also won the Port of Harlem Jazzmen and Ammons/Lewis Mosaics on ebay, plus some Marilyn Crispell and Richard Grossman trios and Braxton's Six Compositions Quartet w/ Ed Blackwell on Antilles.

For the record, these are legit releases by Universal Europe. -
It would be a good set, but it somehow feels incomplete. Perusing Brown's discography, I saw a wealth of unissued sessions dating from 1964 on. In addition there are the many albums of his released only in Europe and Japan. It seems like what is really needed is a Holy Ghost-like project that would pull all of these disparate parts together into a carefully annotated package. The man certainly deserves it.

How about a Marion Brown Impulse!/Arista Select containing: Porto Novo (1967/70) Duets (1970/73) Geechee Recollections (1973) Sweet Earth Flying (1974) Vista (1975)

Likewise! Thanks. -
Well apparently the sale was a hit. I placed my order a week ago and still haven't even been charged yet. The website states: Due to the popularity of the sale, we sold out of some titles. More are on the way so please allow up to 3 weeks for processing!

A Rather Revealing Ornette Coleman Clip
colinmce replied to AndrewHill's topic in Miscellaneous Music
David, Moffet, & Ornette/Sound. It mostly concerns the Coleman trio recording the Who's Crazy soundtrack material. A very fascinating watch. It's coupled with another short film about Roland Kirk and John Cage. Available here: http://www.amazon.com/Ornette-Coleman-Trio-Featuring-Roland/dp/B0002SLYMS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1297784223&sr=1-1 -

Nope. I don't care if it's an RVG or earlier. Like I said, the only Blakey stuff I have is the Birdland dates, Moanin' and Mosaic. Other than that, I'm open. -
I just scored an LP copy of the Mosaic box that contains this material, so this CD is reduntant. I could sell it, but I figure I'll make it more interesting and offer it for trade since I'll just use the money to buy something else anyways. Also, the disc is currently going for about $3-4 on Amazon, so I'm not looking for much. A spare RVG or other Blue Note (or umbrella label) CD will do. Particularly, I'm looking to fill holes in my Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter and Grant Green collections. As far as they go, I only have: A Night at Birdland, Moanin', Mosaic, Idle Moments, Quartets w/ Sonny Clark, Green Street, Speak No Evil, Night Dreamer, Ju-Ju, The Soothsayer so I'm open to just about any other titles. Also interested in early BN Jackie McLean & the like. As I said, I'm open.
