Are there any box bargains currently available?
colinmce replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sam Rivers Blue Note Mosaic from Reckless Records (http://www.reckless.com) for $69.99 If you're interested, I suggest calling them as soon as you place your order so they hold it for you. -

Modestly priced on Amazon and coupled with a fine Louis Hayes/Yusef Lateef date: http://www.amazon.com/Blues-Bag-Buddy-Defranco/dp/B000024YGC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1296144012&sr=8-3 -
Cool, thanks. Those prices are the best I've seen.

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low
colinmce replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I admit, I am very disinclined to order from them because of their shipping cost (not so much the speed). I find their pricing structure bizarre. And $7 shipping for a single Select is egregious. -

Question about "Look Out" by Stanley Turrentine
colinmce replied to CJ Shearn's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yep. The Mosaic is comprised of quintet and sextet sessions between 1961 and 1969, most of them never released on CD (or sometimes even LP). The albums are: -Comin' Your Way! -Jubilee Shout -A Chip off the Old Block -In Memory Of -Mr. Natural -Another Story -
Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low
colinmce replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My suggestion: get the "last chance" ones (if they're on your wantlist), if you can/if it suits with shipping costs, add something else (I just ordered both running low ones and threw in the Carter/Bradford Select to get the order just under 300$)... and if you have some extra cash, get some of the not yet running low/newer ones. I've done so in the past few years, have bought the Crusaders, Ellington Small Group, Chu and Braxton from the in-print ones (lots of it not played yet) and managed to get hold of almost all the "last chance" ones in time. I tend to only buy them when they hit "Running Low" as well. Somehow I can justify the expense then. I also always throw in a Select when I buy a black box because what's really the difference between $120 and $165? Yes, the key word here is 'rationalization' -

Sonny Rollins - Night at the Village Vanguard
colinmce replied to riverrat's topic in Recommendations
I can't speak for the TCOJ variations, but imo the RVG is definitely preferable over the McMaster for having all the music in one place, plus a few extra stage announcements from Sonny. The sonics are good, though it is a kind of rough recording which is what I like about it in the first place. I think the Penguin Guide says it best: "The live material, originally cherrypicked for a single peerless LP, has now been stretched across two CDs, and in its latest incarnation the in-person feel is heightened by the addition of some more of Sonny's announcements. In the past we felt that the abundance of this material slightly checked the power-packed feel of the original LP, but in the new RVG edition the sound is extraordinarily deep and immediate, and the sheer impact of Rollins in top form is overwhelming -- hence our upgrading to crown status, since this is a model example of a classic record given its proper treatment." -

Bump down to $20. The cheapest on Amazon is $27. -
Great condition, BMG issue but that just means a little text by the barcode. $25 shipped.

Roland Kirk Quartet - "No Tonic Pres" Heard it many times before, but damn damn damn that is a ferocious tune. One of the baddest groups ever assembled. The rest of the album is just as fine, of course.

Yeah, let us know. I noticed that earlier yesterday myself. I didn't read too closely, so I just assumed it was discs 1-2 or 1-4 or something. -
Fine, I'll just take the Cecil then.

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low

I think a piece of my tax return is going toward the Johnny Smith. -
Bill Evans on Rhodes isn't even half as bad as Eddie Gomez on electric bass.

A very cool idea! But no Poll Winners doing "The Blessing"? -

Ah, screw it. I'm not a huge OP fan, but for this price I'll try it and re-sell for another Mosaic if I really don't like it. -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
colinmce replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
In brief: very enjoyable, only minorly "academic" as you say (not me). The For Two Pianos and For Four Orchestras material is the only outwardly 'difficult' stuff on the set, and maybe the solo material and For Trio to those entirely disinclined toward the avant garde. Other than that, it's impossible to imagine not enjoying the rest: the scintillating quartets with Kenny Wheeler and George Lewis, the wonderful duets with Muhal Richard Abrahms and especially the Creative Orchesta material are all sure to please. If it's exploring you're after then I can't imagine a better set. -
I have his recordings on Hat Art. They were a difficult listen at first (even for someone who loves Cecil Taylor), but the music reveals itself in time. Interesting stuff.

For those who don't know, a 2-disc set that couples the Royal Roost broadcasts of the BOTC band and the Paris 1949 set w/ Dameron. Not necessarily a legit release I don't think, but I've been needing both those sets for a while and the price is quite right (most copies are $2-3 on Amazon).

Buddy Rich and Johnny Smith sets running low
colinmce replied to golfcrazy1984's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
For some reason, I thought it was one of the 5-disc $85 sets and I gave it a thought due to the sidemen, but seeing it is a 7-disc $119er, it gets a pass from me.
