  1. Abysmal cover/great music. "Flight To Jordan" is one of my favorite jazz compositions. I may prefer the Blue Note version with Dizzy Reece, but the Savoy recording is very nice, too.
  2. Jaipur appeared on the officially sanctioned compilation CD by Giles Peterson Impressed Vol 1 so I believe the tapes do exist (as with Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe) Both of which have been studiously overlooked for reissue by the license owners. I'll find it later, but there's an article on that very compilation which stated that Peterson couldn't locate the tapes and used a needledrop for that track. Here we go: http://www.jazzinternationale.com/impressed-oh-yes-we-are/
  3. Aren't the tapes missing though?
  4. Indeed. It's no game-changer, but if I had a CD, I'd play it pretty often. A very enjoyable record.
  5. I think Steve mentioned seeing a set featuring recorder a few months back. I'd be interested to hear what someone can do on that instrument in an Creative context.
  6. Agreed. I wish he turned up on more records. For my money he's of the best soloists on the scene.
  7. Worth shelling out for the new CD which tacks on two full sets from another night!

    Aaron Sachs

I'm rather hesitant to add an RIP to the title as I've not come across any news articles, but Loren Schoenberg mentioned on Facebook that Aaron Sachs passed away recently. Not hard to believe, and from a reliable source. Sachs was a wonderful player of the clarinet, playing with lots of shading and soul IMO. Little use listing who he played with-- how to narrow it down? A life in music well lived.
  9. That's new to me. Looks good.
  10. Very nice article, wonderful to see Jimmy in the NYT. Since I can't resist snarking on NYT jazz crit, the "Guiffre resurgence" angle is junk and could've been the case any time in the last 25 years.
  11. Some guys want to know if their girlfriend is "on the pill" and some want to know if she is "on to Pilz." Sorry, couldn't resist. Still working the Ran Blake inventory at Casa Leeway: Owl LP. Pretty interesting. Looking forward to the rest. This is one of my favorite Blake LPs. I'm really puzzling over the liner notes on the back. Are they written by Ran? The left column is pretty straightforward, about Schuller, 3rd Stream and the NE Conservatory of Music. The right column though is perplexing. Were John Simon, Susan Sontag and Amiri Baraka figures that loomed large in Ran's personal landscape? Are the comments meant to be taken seriously? They are really rather inscrutable. It seems the very last paragraph might be intended humorously, but I'm not certain of that. As far as the author of the note goes, this does not seem to be Ran writing, but more likely one of the producers, perhaps JJ Pussiau (indeed the slightly capricious tone suggests a French sensibility). As far as the description of the "storyline", this is typical of Ran's improvising methodology. He often envisions people-- friends, historical figures, people he admires-- in narrative situations and scores the "film" he sees accordingly. So Simon, Sontag, and Baraka do not particularly loom large in Ran's world, they were likely just on his mind at the time. The programs that accompany his performances often have quite detailed and personal dedications.
  12. Figured, but wanted to be sure.
  13. Never seen this one. What's the date?
  14. There is a Stan Getz Roost box set on eBay for $10/free shipping. OOP. Some of the best music ever made. <----
  15. Pretty major one: Ran Blake's notes as printed in the booklet for Unmarked Van seem to be transcribed verbatim from a handwritten first draft outline, including placeholders (i.e. NAME OF DRUMMER, 'Mention Third Stream Foundation' and ????). I'd like to think this was done on purpose in order to give us a peek into the thought process, but, um, I don't think so. At least Art Lange was having a good day, and his contribution is thoughtful, well-written, and illuminating, rather than his occasional dump of half-baked pablum.

  17. PM on: Samuel Blaser Quartet - As The Sea - (hatOLOGY) Tony Malaby Tamarindo - Somos Agua - (Clean Feed) Ches Smith and These Arches - Hammered - (Clean Feed)
  18. Someone should grab The Short Life of Barbara Monk. An all-time great jazz record that's actually pretty hard to find on CD.
  19. Glad someone saved me from myself!
  20. Some friends of mine were in a band in St. Louis about 10 years ago. The cops raided their practice space on a "tip" and trashed it, including slashing open every drum head. Of course, they found nothing and had zero culpability.
  21. Lord, this thread is making me vaguely jealous. I've never really met a known musician before, or ever seen live jazz for that matter. That said, it's not really in my character to approach musicians anyways, so even if I were to catch a gig sometime, I doubt I'd say anything, or have anything to say.
  22. Hm, I guess I'm in the minority-- I like the 50s sessions better than the 60s; I'd go so far as to say much better. I find that after Soul Station, Workout, & No Room For Squares the 60s albums get increasingly patchy. I really need to replace my Mosiac, so I hope it sticks around a bit longer!
  23. Nice. Ran is truly a hero of mine, and his music is one of my passions. I have nearly every record he's done, save a couple of the Soul Notes. I like the IAI session, but prefer his others from this time on Horo and Owl. Rapport is a nice little primer on his world and has some of his most sprightly playing (keeping in mind who we're dealing with here!) "There's too much light in the world" -Ran
  24. I suppose I have come across that PW Project CD before... Gauci/Knuffke/Filiano & Mondoc/Green/Baker feat. Shipp/Campbell/Swell both new on Relative Pitch. The latter is definitely a must-get.
