  1. Ran is a musical hero of mine and I'd LOVE to see you release one of his records. RAPPORT is a spectacular record that acts as a good primer on his music and sound world. That said, it wouldn't necessarily be my first pick. But THAT said, out of Ran's OOP music-- and that's the bulk of his 70s and 80s recordings-- RAPPORT and FILM NOIR are about the most attainable for liscensing. The Owls are owned by Universal, the Horos are owned by who knows, TAKE 1 & 2 are private press tapes owned probably by Ran, and PAINTED RHYTHMS are owned by GM. For my money, his total masterpieces of the era in question are the PAINTED RHYTHMS and VERTIGO albums. Long story short, I'd recommend FILM NOIR above RAPPORT, yet I would also never, ever turn down the chance to have the latter on CD. Long ago I suggested THE NEWEST SOUND AROUND. It came out on legit CD in France around 2000 and has since turned up on a couple Andorran labels. So maybe it's too late for that one, but I still think this very seminal record deserves a legitimate domestic release. I know there are other big FILM NOIR fans on here.
  2. Thanks for the heads up, Alexander. I'll try to pick it up soon myself!
  3. I've enjoyed his videos as well. I listen to a set each night while I do closing paperwork at work. Very grateful for these folks to present these full sets.
  4. Videographer Don Mount has posted videos of the majority of Tyshawn Sorey's recent Stone residence on YouTube (it also goes without saying he has dozens and dozens of other performances online...a key resource, especially for us far-flung fans). Here is a link to his duo with Marilynn Crispell. Along the side you will see the trio with Crispell & Helias, Fieldwork ,Paradoxical Frog, the Button Trio, Burrell/Grimes, and duos with Jen Shyu and Fay Victor. I think the only performances from the week not online are the trio with Todd Neufeld & Thomas Morgan, and a duo with Matt Mitchell (pity!)
  5. They should repress it instead of hoarding a few old copies and offering a gouge.
  6. Reminds me of this Olivia Tremor Control LP:
  7. McPhee/Levin/Corsano sounds fantastic. The rest is pretty too. Love to see Lee still going at it.

Incredible video of a Schlippenbach Quartett (Workman) concert from Atlanta, 1998. Jeff, were you there? I'm guessing you know the poster of the video, Scott Burland. He has many others including Brotzmann Tentet + duos with Drake & Cyrille, DKV, Trio 3, and a couple of yourself. Great resource!
  9. Love the variety on this one. Great record. I wish Mosaic or someone would re-release his CBS LPs in a CD box set.
  10. Trost label & distribution releases for the rest of 2014: I bolded the good part. Nice to have PP back in print, but these LPs are overpriced as hell.
  11. Bullshit! Glad this prick was arrested and I hope they take everything he has to renumerate CT.
  12. As per Mark Dresser. This is very, very sad news.
  13. Additionally, the label's updated packaging is some of the nicest I've ever seen.
  14. Great news. I do wish it had all of BALLETS though!
  15. Given that 95%+ of the world vinyl is horrible shit, please go for it. Melt all that Mancini into nothing, PLEASE.
  16. Braxton - Santa Cruz Broke a bit of a personal rule to never spend more than $35 on a single CD, but at $45 I doubt I could do much better. It surely would've run close to that at Tower Records ca. 1998 anyways. Looking forward to it!!
  17. The Kidd Jordan set is endlessly rewarding.
  18. I had a pal who's wheelhouse is very exclusively pop and rock who used to troll the hell out of IHM. I think they banned him. But they had a nice community there, if a bit stiff.
  19. I don't want to go down a rabbit hole of shit talking this guy, 'cause he genuinely doesn't bother me, but anyone who's read his blog can see perfectly where he's coming from, and jazz is not his home base. Personally I don't have a lot of use for these types, but they're more than entitled to their place in the conversation, and it's better in the long run to have people unpredisposed to this music come to it and have their say. Really not a big deal, but ...
  20. http://www.newyorker.com/humor/daily-shouts/sonny-rollins-words "Satire" or "humor" apparently. Getting at what I don't know. This offends me less as a jazz fan than as a thinking person and a reader. Prose journalism has been in a state of free fall these last several years and inane junk like this only solidifies my opinion. But yeah, it's also terribly insulting to use a living person's likeness in this way without their knowledge. I'd say TNY could do better but these days I don't really think so. The twin evils of "Gladwellification" and "Feedification" have torpedoed the balance of intelligent print institutions but I guess that's another conversation. Pathetic.
  21. Very excited to have finally scored a copy of Lee Konitz at the Half Note (Verve 2xCD).
