  1. After listening again I really do hear it on the A-side; the B is a bit more "conventional". But their tones are surprisingly similar and Booker plays with a lot of repetition, as well as with that paradoxical urgent languidity Fred has. But maybe I just listen to a lot of Fred!!
  2. I think people underestimate just how much her playing is invested in small gestures, which is something I like about it. I think a lot of people sort of cram her into a more extroverted box than she belongs in. I'd love to hear a recording of the trio with Tom Rainey and Dan Peck: xybert, maybe you'll be put off by Paradoxical Frog, maybe not. This is my favorite context to hear her in, but the Anti-House albums are awesome, too.

  4. I was inspired by this thread to pull out That's It! and was struck by how much Booker sounded like Fred Anderson in places. Not all places, of course, but some. Being the sole horn on the date gives him a lot of room to stretch out which lets him spin some very long lines. But yeah, if I was in the other room I could easily mistake a bit of this for The Missing Link. Also a big fan of the Bethlehem album in question.
  5. Likely just need to restock. So long as you lock in the price you should be good.
  6. The new Jazz Messengers catalogue lists Mohawk and JCO - Communication
  7. Sounds like a winner. Maybe they should record live!
  8. Likewise. That's very sad.
  9. I just thought Hammered sounded so soft and mannered. It seemed like perhaps he was going for a heavy sound (some promotional copy mentioned inspiration coming from rock, and I think Ches specifically mentioned his time with Xiu Xiu and The Melvins informing this music), but I could just feel them playing the charts. No fire, no energy .... almost polite sounding. The net effect is the band coming off as outgunned, and I know that everyone involved can bring serious heat. But not on Hammered. (And I don't think I'm missing what they were going for ... and if I did, then, well ... what they were going for was a miss to begin with). Again, this was just my reaction to this album, though there's plenty other music from NYC today that gives me the same vibes. But I certainly don't write Ches Smith off. His playing in Snakeoil is some of the most inspired and incredible I've ever heard. He really has something going on, especially as a percussionist.
  10. I'm sure it does sound better in person. And I actually liked the first record (without Berne-- not that that has anything to do with it) a fair bit, but I really did not get what he was going for with Hammered.
  11. I hope they bring it live. Their Clean Feed record is fucking weak.
  12. Hurry your ass over to Amazon really quick to grab the Peter Kowald Discography box set for $25. 5 CDs and a full illustrated discography. It was $68 earlier this afternoon.
  13. John Carter Quintet - Variations (Moers)
  14. My copy of Music For Prancing has the following sticker: 1/88 Real Records IC, IA R. Solheim $5.49 I grabbed it exactly 20 years later a few blocks away for $6
  15. Your loss! An early jazz purchase for me and still and all-time favorite.
  16. Mine is on the way. Thanks, Chuck.
  17. I figured this thread was created expressly to post the most obvious one of all:
  18. Online they have some jazz stuff. Like Clifford said, they're hosing people (who deserve it).
  19. Not that I can tell. I managed to find a way to buy it on the label's page last week but am now having trouble locating that section.
  20. Two very solid reissues: Of course, Jonathan Horowich's long-awaited Tapscott release: http://www.amazon.com/Giant-Awakened-Horace-Tapscott-Quintet/dp/B00MVLLSGG/ref=pd_sim_sbs_m_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1AGFB2E4YADNZBYR5KCB And a CD reissue of George Russell Presents: The Esoteric Circle with its original art: http://www.amazon.com/George-Russell-Presents-Esoteric-Circle/dp/B00MFXM0JY/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1411781803&sr=1-1&keywords=esoteric+circle
  21. Dusty Groove is listing reissues of As Serious As Your Life and Morning Joy for October.
  22. Almost certainly an Otoroku album forthcoming from that one! (as an aside, I sure hope a document from the 2014 Brotz/Parker/Drake tour shows up, too)
  23. While I can't admit to having heard The Whammies-- and I'm sure I'll grab a couple of these down the line-- I will say that for whatever reason I find Ideal Bread much more commanding of my attention. Something about that dry, swinging, small group sound cuts right to the bone of Lacy's music to me. But maybe this is what I'm going out of my way to hear, as it seems like the Whammies set up is more reflective of the big sound of his Sextet.
