  1. Okay, I ordered the movie Ray, because I have been wanting to check this sucker out. It was a very enjoyable movie, BTW. The best movie I've seen in a while. Okay, there's a lot of scene's and story line involving Ray's deal with Atlantic Records. As we all know, Nesuhi produced pretty much all of the jazz Atlantic stuff in the 50's and 60's. When the producer of Atlantic Records, (in the movie) goes to Ray's apartment to ask him to get signed, he says his name is Ahmed Ertegun. Not Nesuhi Ertegun, can someone explain this?
  2. I like lots of things without piano -- but this comment struck me because Jack DeJohnette is actually a good pianist, too! Maybe that's his secret -- even when he's "only" playing the drums, he's still the pianist in the group! I think all the real amazing drummers also played piano. My old piano teacher used to say, "drummers make the best pianists." I think he was referring to drummers' sense of rhythm.
  3. It seems to be a lot of kats' favorite instrument. I dig it along with a tenor or other horns, but I usually can only take so much piano trio..
  4. I remember seeing that jackson pick on google. I typed in girls with big tits, that's came up.
  5. If there's no piano, then I need, an organ or guitar or vibes, to give it that colour, most of the time, for me. I don't like it when Elvin didn't use a piano with his trio in the later days of Blue Note. The Gerry Mulligan Quartet did allright without it. I really like The Shape Of Jazz To Come, which has no piano. Most of the time I feel like it's missing something without a piano, but not on that album.
  6. I think the most thrilling reading comes from old issues, like from the 50's and 60's. But yeah, its important to read the latest, also.
  7. Sounds even more different than the Metheny Group.
  8. I most love them because it's where I find out about the new RVG reissues. And this place too. A year ago, I was on my own with jazz, no one to talk to, ask questions...
  9. I recently ran into a guy selling old issues of Downbeat. 6 bucks, starting off, then they get lower as you buy more. I bought a couple. My dad wanted the ones with a couple of musicians from the Tijuana Brass in it. I particularly like the Hugh Masekela article in the most recent issue, and the Blindfold tests.

    Jobim

Man this guy had 100 plus takes of one song on his A&M Wave album. Damn! Joao Pamla, is my favorite musician from the album.
  11. Oh, I just thought of great one. AL HIRT. Sometimes his stuff gets me out of a slum, but if he played some real complex jazz, it'd be so awesome. His skills were tremendous!
  12. I'm curious to see what is the more popular mag. I just started subscribing to Downbeat. What do you? And I'd like to discuss the pros and cons of each mag.
  13. Yeah, I got the number ones, and the fact there's no Sunday, DOES screw the fuck out of me! Damn!

    AOTW

    Can we re-do an AOTW?
  15. Couldn't be the Miles Davis set, could it?
  16. Bill Evans can play no jozz! And Charlie Parker is not jazz; just overrated!
  17. I don't really get this. I guess you have to have heard every single cut from an artist to find out if they never made an album you really love. I'll say Herbie Mann. Or at least from what I've heard already.
  18. Why do you have to spoil it??

    AOTW

Well if they continue to go like the current one, I think the fate of AOTW is already determined. -_-
  20. Remember when Warner Bros. had Chico Hamilton? Man those were the days! I suppose..
  21. I started off acoustic too! Went electric. It was the best thing that ever happend to me. But I was trying to play Montgomery, not ACDC. What's ACDC? lol
  22. Mental illness?
