  1. I pilfered this from some website a few months back: Juan-les-Pins, 07/26/69 Same Shame (Bobby Hutcherson) 14:14 The Peace-Maker (Harold Land) 13:57 Spiral (Joe Chambers) 15:21 Blues Mind Matter (Bobby Hutcherson) 16:29 Bobby Hutcherson: vibraphone Harold Land: tenor sax Stanley Cowell: piano Reggie Johnson: bass Joe Chambers: drums Bertrand.
  2. Both the Miles quintet and the Hutcherson/Land quintet played at Antibes on 7/25/69 and 7/26/69. All four concerts were recorded by ORTF and set lists are available. The 7/25/69 Hutcherson set was released as "Blow-Up' on JMY. I noticed tonight that Stanley Cowell quotes Wayne Shorter's 'Masqualero' during his solo on 'Spiral'. My theory was the Miles group was on first on 7/25, played this tune (which was part of their repertoire), and that's how it was in Stanley's head that night (assuming he attended the Miles gig). But Pete Losin's Miles discography shows that Miles played 'Masqualero' on 7/26, but not on 7/25. So how did the piece make it into Stanley's subconscious? It's possible that Stanley knew the tune from the original record (it's hardly a standard though), or maybe the Miles group (without Miles of course) had a brief rehearsal on 7/25 during which they ran through the tune, and Cowell attended that rehearsal (not impossible). Or the dates of the two Hutcherson gigs were inverted (i.e. the released concert is from 7/26, not 7/25). Any other ideas? Bertrand. P.S. 'Blow-Up' is fucking amazing.
  3. Glad you went - Chris is one of those unheralded guys who really has respect for the music. Did you catch Noal Cohen's lecture? Bertrand.

  5. I saw George in August at the Iridium at the Lee Morgan tribute . He looked great, but told me he would need a new transplant soon. Didn't know it would be this soon. He was supposed to play with the Cookers this Sunday in Baltimore. I wonder who will sub for him. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. Bertrand.
  6. I will report back on the Mobley and other things. I don't know when I can get to it, hopefully before 2009. I think the digital copies are for playback - they keep the originals for preservation. I cannot make any copies, of course, don't even ask. However, don't forget that the Horace Silver Newport was from these tapes (although they found a better source at the last minute). Maybe some label might be willing to clear the rights and get this out there. Tons of more interesting stuff: 1) Teddy Charles tentet w/ Gigi Gryce. 2) Jam session with Charles Mingus and Dewey Redman. 3) Tubby Hayes in D.C. with Walter Bishop, Jr., Roy Brooks and BUTCH WARREN (1962). Bertrand.
  7. As I have said before, a discography without composer credits is incomplete. An example: Wallace Roney has recorded two pieces entitled 'Lost': one by Wayne Shorter, and one by Jacky Terrasson. Tom Lord might lead you to believe that he recorded the same piece twice. There are many other examples. I can see why there may not be enough room in a book, but I'm sure the CD-ROM would have had plenty of space for composer credits. Mike Fitzgerald could have done this in his sleep. Problem cases (Jimerick?) could probably have been resolved with Alfred's session notes. Bertrand.
  8. Larry has it right. What I should have written is: 'I have more faith than you seem to have that someone on this board would have some knowledge about this'. It is a long shot, but Larry named some possible suspects. I have Grachan III's phone number in my wallet, and it at some point it is something I want to ask him about, but I would rather have a little inkling first so I don't look like a fool. If his grandfather has some major accomplishment in his life (including being a musician), I would rather show that I know something. Right now, I'm in the dark. Bertrand.
  9. It was a very brief conversation. I have more faith that someone on this board would have some knowledge than you. Bertrand.
  10. My son Matthew knows all about Grachan Moncur III and his dad Grachan II, the bass player. But he was wondering - what do we know about Grachan I? I assume he was from Newark, NJ, but was he a musician? If not, what did he do for a living? BTW, I met Grachan IV at a III gig last year, and I asked him if there was a Grachan V. He said he just got married, so they were working on it! Thanks, Matthew and Bertrand.
  11. This is great news! Hoping for the best on the road to a full recovery. Bertrand.
  12. Is Zigfield Kessler related to Siegfried Kessler? Bertrand.
  13. My question # 1 is not resolvable by Google, and probably not #4 either. #2 and #3 probably take you right here! Bertrand.
  14. Is there a way to get a copy of Javier's thesis without going to Rutgers and spending 3 hours xeroxing it? It's not like there will ever be another book on BJP. Bertrand.
  15. I just suggested some questions at the end of a spam.
  16. Sorry about that - I guess their stuff does time out. Next time, I'll do a cut and paste. But Daniel listed the thing I found. So it's Mobley after 1972, but of course it's a jam session so he may only solo on one cut. If you look at that sonic database, there's tons of stuff out there without song titles. I have my work cut out for me, but there's only so much time. The most urgent is the 7/2/61 Newport date with Wayne and KD. They only list two tracks, but these seems awfully short. I listened to this years ago and it was 20 minutes. Were Newport sets really that short? I wonder if there's another cut that might be tacked on to someone else's set. They also have the 1959 Blakey Newport set. The '59 and '61 sets together would make a ncie little 50-55 minute CD. Bertrand.
  17. This is terrible news - we want a Dolphy/Little complete 2-CD set, not another remastering of Volume One. I'll try to call on Monday if I have time at work. Does anyone know the 1-800 number again (I have it somewhere). Maybe I can get them to reissue Bobby Timmons' Holiday Soul by Xmas. \Bertrand.

    A quiz

That's the one I know of - any others? Bertrand.
  19. If this has been discussed previously, I missed it. Hank recorded with Cedar Walton in 1972 (The Breakthrough - 02/22/72, just 3 days after Lee Morgan died), and his last known recording was one track with Tete Montoliu (03/22/80). I think it is generally assumed that there was nothing in between, but look what I found while trolling around loc.gov: http://lcweb5.loc.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/1024224/sonic.txt This is something I could listen to soon and identify the pieces (I hope). I noticed a LOT of their listings have unidentified tracks. Bertrand.

    A quiz

Quick - name a musician who recorded with both Grachan Moncur II AND Grachan Moncur III. I know of one; perhaps there are others. This could be enlightening. Bertrand.
  21. Who composed these pieces? This definitely looks interesting. Bertrand.
  22. Don't get me started on the atrocious Fargo. I HATED that movie. Bertrand.
  23. 'Hello To The Wind' is also on the Blue Note Live at the Roxy, now part of the Now CD (Joe is not on drums). And of course, it's on Double Exposure, the duets album with Larry Young (with Joe on piano). It is indeed a gorgeous piece. Miles is credited as composer on 'The Ghetto Walk', not Joe. I shared a cab with Joe and Grachan III in NYC last October, after they played at David Weiss' Wayne Shorter tribute. I still can't believe it. I took a cab with two of my three favorite composers, after leaving a gig honoring the third. Bertrand.
  24. I'll put it back next week.
