  1. I kind of see what Jim means, I think. But here's the deal. I got it for $7 from yourmusic. It features what may be the last two tunes Dewey Redman ever recorded. One is a trio feature for Dewey only that I think is improvised and very moving, especially in light of Dewey's passing just a few months later. Definitely worth $7 just for that. Bertrand.
  2. I am very glad that you could join us. I have listened to your podcast before, and I think it is wonderful that you are honoring your father's music in this way. If you search other threads, you will see that I have been trying to put together a complete list of all of your father's known compositions. There are three at the Library of Congress that I believe have not been recorded, but I suspect there are more unrecorded ones that you or your family would have access to. Freddie Hubbard's version of 'Assunta' is a personal favorite - Wayne Shorter's solo is just gorgeous. Are you still in touch with some of your father's colleagues? Bertrand.
  3. Are you Cal's son? We would love to hear about your father on the board! Bertrand.
  4. I think the JA was legendary Newark tenor Jimmy Anderson, but I could be wrong. Bertrand.
  5. Thelma Patton also told me about the unissued DIW session. Bertrand.
  6. 1) Iron City is Larry Young, not Patton 2) Are you sure the unissued DIW session is forthcoming? Bertrand.
  7. A quick glance at the schedule at the usual venues shows that your best bet is probably the Young Lions at Bohemian Caverns, which is a highly recommended club. As we get closer to the date, I'll see if anything crops up. The City Paper has the listings (it comes out on Thursday). Send me a PM. Bertrand.
  8. I knew because I remember seeing that picture on 9/11. The anguish of the woman watching the Towers collapse in which possibly one of her loved ones is trapped is not something I can ever forget. I can believe JS did not post this maliciously, but it needs to go. Bertrand.
  9. I met Torsten Goods when he was part of the Monk guitar competition. He even gave me a couple of his CDs which of course I have yet to listen to. 'Bleeker Street' is not yet officially recorded, correct? Bertrand.
  10. I find the alleged humorous use of a photo of people looking in horror at the Twin Towers collapsing to be in the poorest of taste. Bertrand.
  11. I got an e-mail from Fedex telling me the order is on the way, but it does not say what is in it. On the plus side, all 12 titles I asked for are still on the web site so there is hope. Bertrand.

    Woody Shaw

These have never been on CD, nor are there any plans for this, correct? I ask because I found out to my surprise that both are available on iTunes for $6 each. If there are no future plans for an actual CD, I will spring for these. Any other Elektra/Musician titles I should keep my eyes out for? Thanks, Bertrand.
  13. I'm curious - how many people get chewed out or threatened to be roughed up by 'his boys' during a complete Sinatra session?
  14. Dave Holland is the bassist on the Joni tribute. Does this whet your appetite more Bertrand.
  15. A little birdie who heard a few unissued/rejected BN sessions told me that the non-mixing does not really affect the sound quality all that much. I agree that making the tapes available for researchers on a listen-only basis would be the best. I would be willing to take a trip to Rutgers just to hear the rejected Jackie McLean session. The internet is just an alternative - they could keep it unmixed to save on costs. Every time I run into someone who was affiliated with the Left Bank Jazz Society, I try to pitch the idea of having the tapes in an institution for researchers to listen to, rather than try to sell them (especially in light of the poor audio quality), but so far no luck. They were at Morgan State U. for a while, but just in a closet, not set up for listening I remember that Soul Stream had called Joel Dorn's office and they said they had sent the tapes back, but to whom was not clear. I had a fresh lead, and I was going to contact Dorn, but obviously that plan has changed. BTW, we haven't heard from Soul Stream in a while. For the inventory I did of Wayne Shorter compositions for the paperback edition of the bio, I would have liked to pursue the lead that Larry Ridley gave me that some of the Blue Note pieces (e.g. 'House Of Jade') were part of Roy Haynes' repertoire when Wayne was in the band. There was a Left Bank gig (taped or not?), but if it was taped, I don't know if anyone has heard it. Also, I'd sure like to hear the gig where Grachan Moncur III met Butch Warren... Bertrand.
  16. Colaiuta is the drummer on the Joni tribute. Bertrand.
  17. Wayne has been working with the Imani Winds wind quintet, and has written new arrangements of some of his pieces for this configuration (quartet + wind quintet). I saw Imani Winds in Baltimore in April (they played 'Terra Incognita', the piece he wrote for them). I asked one of the members after what pieces he arranged for them. She mentioned 'The Three Marias' but didn't know the other titles (?). I suspect these are the same arrangements done at UCLA. Valerie, how can one find out where Wayne is playing? The listing at imnworld.com is incomplete (the UCLA gig was never mentioned). Whenever I call them they say everything booked is listed, but I attended a five-day Wayne festival in Paris (1/04) that was never listed on their site. I wonder if Wayne is planning on recording again soon. 'Prometheus Unbound' and 'Terra Incognita' have still not been officially recorded. Another live record of these various collaborations (UCLA winds, Imani Winds, various symphony concerts) would be a satisfying alternative. Bertrand.
  18. I'm totally with chewy on this. I would love to hear a complete Blue Note session, false starts and all, including the chatter. Jim is probably right - the takes are no doubt mostly aborted, but there could be a couple of decent alternates that have not shown up yet. Cornbread would be a good one - as I just posted on the Herbie Hancock thread, I would love to hear the rejected session from 9/17/65 (the day before the master takes) to see how these pieces evolved. How did Herbie put together his killer intro to 'Ceora' - did he already do it the day before, or did he think about it overnight between the two sessions? Did Jackie play on the rejected 'Ceora', or was he also out as he was on the mater take? Even if they do not put out this stuff for lack of commercial potential and out of respect for the artists, could they not have streams on their website for historical purposes? That's the kind of thing the internet is for. Blue Note needs to get with the program - did they not announce on the revamped site that there would be rarities available for downloading? Rejected tracks would be perfect - they could even make money off of this. The first candidate would be the tune they left off for lack of space from Manhattan Fever. It may not be a masterpiece, but I would buy it for $0.99 just to have a complete session. Bertrand.
  19. There's a recording of the Miles Tribute band from Lugano (7/2/92) where they do a medley of 'Orbits' and 'Paraphernalia'. Wayne and Wallace take killer solos, but then Herbie comes in and goes somewhere else again, with Tony totally following him. You can really hear him take-off. It's really mind-blowing. They should have released this instead of the somewhat lackluster studio album (not bad, just not the group at their best). I saw them in Paris the day before Lugano, and it was good, but nothing like the Lugano gig. The DC gig two weeks before was amazing, however. Herbie's intro to 'Ceora' is stunning - very relaxed, just sets up the piece perfectly. They first tried to record it the day before (9/17/65). I wonder if Herbie went home and thought about it overnight. On 9/17, it was probably the first time he'd seen the tune since Lee had most likely scribbled it down on the subway on the way to the session, in this case bootlegging some bits form the standard 'If Someone Had Told Me' (I also hear a bit of Herbie's 'A Tribute To Someone' in the bridge, but no one agrees with me on that). After the (rejected) session, did Herbie say to himself: 'that was a nice tune. Since we're going to try it again tomorrow, I wonder if there's anything I can add'? I sure would like to hear that rejected session (cf chewy's other thread). He's written some very nice pieces after the sixties too, e.g. 'Joanna's Theme' from Native Dancer. The Joni Mitchell tribute is a bit uneven, but at its best, it's fabulous. The highlight is 'Sweet Bird' - Wayne's tone is beautiful. It's amazing how much great music Herbie and Wayne have made in their 45+ years together. Bertrand.
  20. Just ordered 12. A perusal of the Fantasy Catalog shows that once I get these 12, added to everything I bought over the years, I've covered most of what I need in my life. Or so I think. I'm slowly making a list of titles that eventually I might pick up if I can find them cheap or if they happen to float my way. Nothing that I can't live without. The only one I missed out on is Dameron's Fontainebleau. His biographer told me to skip that one, but now I'm kind of sorry. Sure glad I made two orders earlier in the Fall when they started having the discount (free shipping over $50 but no 10%). I got some stuff like Jenkins/Jordan/Timmons that I bet will soon be impossible to find. Bertrand. P.S. 1) Today, the default was not the free shipping - I had to switch options. Beware. 2) I can't believe some Booker Ervins are gone - glad I picked them up years ago.
  21. I'm going to make an order today. What do they do if you ordered 10 and one is unavailable - do you lose the free one? Bertrand.
  22. Who said anything about Shorter playing at the conference? He has a gig on 6/6. If I were in Chicago that night for any reason (organissimo conference or other) I would go to the gig. I joked about his attending the conference (as a participant) but I assumed the exclamation point would indicate that I was not being serious about his actually attending. My question was intended as follows: 'is May set in stone?' Jim gave a very good reasong why May is better than June, so that's that. Bertrand.
  23. Maybe we can even talk Wayne into attending!
  24. Could the conference be slightly later in the year? Wayne Shorter is playing Chicago on 6/6 - this would be give me two good reasons to fly out! Bertrand.
  25. Never understood why Millie Jackson is holding one shoe in her hand. Bertrand.
