I love the 'no tour dates' for Wayne. Does anyone at Blue Note ever check out www.imnworld.com? Anyone going to catch Wayne in Philly on 3/28? I'll be there. Back to the thread at hand. I hope they fix this session once and for all. Bertrand.

Is there a legitimate CD issue of these sessions? Bertrand.

My understanding is that there is no title track on this record. The fourth tune is actually called 'Miles', but at some point it got rechristened and the name has stuck ever since, even up to the latest CD incarnation. Bertrand.

Excellent question. Does anyone know? Bill Heid knows a bit about this session. It was done in Pittsburgh (duh!) for some cheapskate producer. Funny thing, Bill thinks it's Patton, not Young, or at least he did two years ago. Sad to realize that now Webster is no longer with us. I never got to say goodbye. He was a really sweet cat. My life was enriched knowing him. I believe Grachan said he wanted Woody for the date, but Alfred pushed for Lee who was better known. Bertrand.

Regardless of whether the music is 'releasable' or not, something that is never discussed is the actual compositions that are on the Shorter date. The BN discography gives only sketchy titles. It is not clear if these are written pieces or were improvised on the spot. Curiously, even people who have heard the session cannot seem to answer this question! I asked Mouzon - he didn't remember the date, but said that Wayne always brought music to the sessions. I tried to find out from Wayne when I put together the appendix to the bio, but I was not able to reach any definite conclusions in the short time-frame we had. So, in addition to thinking of this as a 'lost' Shorter session, I also think of this as the five 'lost' Shorter compositions. Bertrand.

Isn't he part of the Tonight Show band? I know I saw him in there not too long ago. Bertrand.

Preparing for exile in what could be a hostile land

This thread is the pits. I don't give a crap about what goes on at other boards. We get along here fine, and you come in and stir up trouble. If there's not enough jazz here for you, no one is forcing you to stay. You must not have looked at any other threads. There's plenty enough for me here. -
Herbie's on Leno tonight. Bertrand.

Forget that copyright stuff, what do you think of chewy's post? I am gathering up all my Fresh Sound CDs as we speak in case they are recalled to be destroyed. Bertrand.

Here's a scenario which might cause consternation. A new member joins the board. 1) The member's first posting refers to their e-bay sales. 2) But this new member is a woman. Is she eagerly greeted like an oasis in the desert, or is she berated for pimpimg her e-bay? -
Unissued Rare Groove Organ sessions on Blue Note
bertrand replied to Soul Stream's topic in Discography
Maybe he's changing titles around. When I saw Reuben at the Kennedy Center in 2001 or 2002, he opened with what I know as 'Back Out' from Love Bug, but identified it as 'Ronnie's Bonnie'. I think it was on what was then his most recent CD. Bertrand. -

Thelonious Monk - New Sony Columbia CD reissues

1) If they are reissuing the Big Band/Quartet with LESS tracks, they are morons. But perhaps I misunderstood. 2) Isn't Monk's Blues supposed to suck? Bertrand. -
I was at the store in Columbia, MD recently and hesitated on the Tubby Hayes but ultimately did not get it. How is this? Bertrand.

Bluerein, Please keep us posted on which Shorter compositions are in the repertoire of this group. Will they stick with the tried and true like so many other repertory groups, or will they branch out? There are many great Shorter compositions that are NEVER covered. I'd love to hear someone do 'Plaza Real', for example. There is a trio version by a Polish pianist, but I'd like to hear a version with horns. Bertrand.

The JFK quintet did a third date, probably also for Riverside, which has never been issued. The drummer on this date is Joe Chambers, who had joined the band at that point. This would probably be his first record date. According to Andrew White, there was even a Chambers composition on the date, possibly called 'The Maze'. If you missed out on the OJC reissue of their first album, Andrew has a bunch of copies, or did when I last spoke to him about the JFK quintet (a year or so ago). Bertrand.

It's a shame that this book is OOP. I got the e-mail from Noal as well - I suspect his copies will be gone in a flash. ACT NOW!!! Bertrand.

Let me derail this thread some more. 'I just go straight there and catch Miles and his band practicing'. Isn't Miles often quoted as saying that he expected his band to rehearse on the bandstand? Did he mean on the bandstand of the club on the afternoon before the evening gig, and not on the bandstand during the actual gig? Has Miles been misquoted or misunderstood all these years? Was Miles a bullshit artist? Comments? Bertrand.

She was actually an FBI agent trolling for predators. Chewy almost took the bait, but someone tipped him off.
