I will report back on the Mobley and other things. I don't know when I can get to it, hopefully before 2009. I think the digital copies are for playback - they keep the originals for preservation. I cannot make any copies, of course, don't even ask. However, don't forget that the Horace Silver Newport was from these tapes (although they found a better source at the last minute). Maybe some label might be willing to clear the rights and get this out there. Tons of more interesting stuff: 1) Teddy Charles tentet w/ Gigi Gryce. 2) Jam session with Charles Mingus and Dewey Redman. 3) Tubby Hayes in D.C. with Walter Bishop, Jr., Roy Brooks and BUTCH WARREN (1962). Bertrand.

As I have said before, a discography without composer credits is incomplete. An example: Wallace Roney has recorded two pieces entitled 'Lost': one by Wayne Shorter, and one by Jacky Terrasson. Tom Lord might lead you to believe that he recorded the same piece twice. There are many other examples. I can see why there may not be enough room in a book, but I'm sure the CD-ROM would have had plenty of space for composer credits. Mike Fitzgerald could have done this in his sleep. Problem cases (Jimerick?) could probably have been resolved with Alfred's session notes. Bertrand.

Larry has it right. What I should have written is: 'I have more faith than you seem to have that someone on this board would have some knowledge about this'. It is a long shot, but Larry named some possible suspects. I have Grachan III's phone number in my wallet, and it at some point it is something I want to ask him about, but I would rather have a little inkling first so I don't look like a fool. If his grandfather has some major accomplishment in his life (including being a musician), I would rather show that I know something. Right now, I'm in the dark. Bertrand.

It was a very brief conversation. I have more faith that someone on this board would have some knowledge than you. Bertrand.

My son Matthew knows all about Grachan Moncur III and his dad Grachan II, the bass player. But he was wondering - what do we know about Grachan I? I assume he was from Newark, NJ, but was he a musician? If not, what did he do for a living? BTW, I met Grachan IV at a III gig last year, and I asked him if there was a Grachan V. He said he just got married, so they were working on it! Thanks, Matthew and Bertrand.

My question # 1 is not resolvable by Google, and probably not #4 either. #2 and #3 probably take you right here! Bertrand. -
Big John: accent on the blues

Is there a way to get a copy of Javier's thesis without going to Rutgers and spending 3 hours xeroxing it? It's not like there will ever be another book on BJP. Bertrand. -

I just suggested some questions at the end of a spam. -
Sorry about that - I guess their stuff does time out. Next time, I'll do a cut and paste. But Daniel listed the thing I found. So it's Mobley after 1972, but of course it's a jam session so he may only solo on one cut. If you look at that sonic database, there's tons of stuff out there without song titles. I have my work cut out for me, but there's only so much time. The most urgent is the 7/2/61 Newport date with Wayne and KD. They only list two tracks, but these seems awfully short. I listened to this years ago and it was 20 minutes. Were Newport sets really that short? I wonder if there's another cut that might be tacked on to someone else's set. They also have the 1959 Blakey Newport set. The '59 and '61 sets together would make a ncie little 50-55 minute CD. Bertrand.

This is terrible news - we want a Dolphy/Little complete 2-CD set, not another remastering of Volume One. I'll try to call on Monday if I have time at work. Does anyone know the 1-800 number again (I have it somewhere). Maybe I can get them to reissue Bobby Timmons' Holiday Soul by Xmas. \Bertrand.

That's the one I know of - any others? Bertrand.

If this has been discussed previously, I missed it. Hank recorded with Cedar Walton in 1972 (The Breakthrough - 02/22/72, just 3 days after Lee Morgan died), and his last known recording was one track with Tete Montoliu (03/22/80). I think it is generally assumed that there was nothing in between, but look what I found while trolling around loc.gov: http://lcweb5.loc.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/1024224/sonic.txt This is something I could listen to soon and identify the pieces (I hope). I noticed a LOT of their listings have unidentified tracks. Bertrand.

Quick - name a musician who recorded with both Grachan Moncur II AND Grachan Moncur III. I know of one; perhaps there are others. This could be enlightening. Bertrand.

Who composed these pieces? This definitely looks interesting. Bertrand. -
Don't get me started on the atrocious Fargo. I HATED that movie. Bertrand.

'Hello To The Wind' is also on the Blue Note Live at the Roxy, now part of the Now CD (Joe is not on drums). And of course, it's on Double Exposure, the duets album with Larry Young (with Joe on piano). It is indeed a gorgeous piece. Miles is credited as composer on 'The Ghetto Walk', not Joe. I shared a cab with Joe and Grachan III in NYC last October, after they played at David Weiss' Wayne Shorter tribute. I still can't believe it. I took a cab with two of my three favorite composers, after leaving a gig honoring the third. Bertrand.

P.S. If ever Kevin were to edit a pseudo-releasable copy for MC, rather then send it to him, he should play it for him as a blindfold test. I doubt he would come up with the high-school student canard, based on Jim and Bill's positive comments on this session. When was the last time MC changed his mind and put something out he had previously wanted to burn? It's been a while. Bertrand.

Upping this to see if one question ever got answered - who wrote 'Jimerick'? Surprised to see how eloquent (albeit wordy) I was back then. Jim's post (#41) made me guffaw. Bertrand.

I could even get you a copy of the original copyright deposit in his handwriting, but yes, there is an issue of who the publisher is. I can't xerox it without a letter. Also, I temporarily do not have access to it - I'll explain later and it will make sense. Perhaps Michael Cuscuna has a lead on who you would contact to get permission to photocopy it. Bertrand.
