  1. So Stanley Clarke dropped out and has since spoken out? Interesting. I remember also that Lamont Johnson (not on the list) was involved for a while, but wrote a letter to Jazz Times/Down Beat saying he was out and happy to be so. He died soon after, poor guy, just after having released a record with which he hoped to make a comeback. I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that Nicole Kidman is most definitely out. Gabor Szabo? Bertrand.
  2. Isn't Dave Holland also a scientologist, albeit a much less outspoken one? I believe I read that once. Stanley Clarke as well, if I remember correctly. Bertrand.

A footnote: Drummer William Murphy often plays with these guys, but I have to admit I think his playing is below par. Somehow, the musicians don't seem to mind him, which is odd. Just last week-end, I passed on a Larry Willis gig because he was on it. Bertrand.

Claude, Unless I missed some mention in the bio which I only skimmed over, the Peabody Institute is in Baltimore. I don't believe they have a D.C. campus. Of course, the two cities are close enough (in the next 50 years, they will be suburbs of one another!), so as a result, Gary plays frequently down here, usually at Twins, often with the group Supernova. I admit I have not caught him in a while, and it sounds like I should consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to see him so often. Shame on me for passing up on this opportunity; based on your recommendation, I will make a point to go see him next time. In fact, I might make it a D.C.-chapter of the organissimo forum get-together. We haven't had one in eons. Bertrand.
  5. Happy birthday Stefan! Bertrand.
  6. Not only that, you can reorganize the box set any way you want! I've re-ordered a number of Mosaic sets back into LP order in just seconds. I agree, the iPod is a godsend, even more for music lovers with little kids and a small townhouse where the TV/DVD and stereo are in the same room. I've also got the complete Larry Young playlist all done. I left out the Fuel stuff, which I don't care for much, and I'm missing the track with Lenny White (and I could use a less scratchy copy of the Buddy Terry LP...) Bertrand.
  7. Wow. That was faster than I expected. I knew it would be on Blue Note. Makes their complete Monk box obsolete! I listened to this session a week ago at the Library of Congress. It's as great as expected, but my favorite Monk/Trane is still the three quartet tunes on Riverside. They stretch more in the second (later) set (as always at these kind of shindigs). The version of 'Sweet And Lovely' is a highlight, with a three-minute Coltrane solo in double time. If you are in D.C. and want to listen to it before it comes out, you can do so in the recorded sound reading room M-F 8:30-5:00. Contact Brian Cornell at 202-707-7833. Bertrand.
  8. I wondered too, until I saw the DVD. It looks like Tina, and it sounds like Tina. It's Tina. Bertrand.

One of the Pips passed away recently. The brief obit in the Washington Post just had the word 'pip' under his name. That caught my eye, and I had to read it to understand what they were talking about. 'What do you do for a living?' 'I'm a Pip'. Bertrand.
  10. Mosaic said a while ago that they are eliminating the running low category. Things will go straight to last chance. The reason was the rapidity with which something moved from running low to last chance. It wasn't worth it. I passed on this set as I have two of the six sessions on CD and one on vinyl. I'm sure the other three will show up on CD eventually, probably as RVGs. Gotta leave some Blue Notes for my retirement years! Bertrand.
  11. Any way to contact ECM directly to suggest titles? I'm still waiting for Dewey Redman's The Struggle Continues... Bertrand.
  12. What's wrong with Ben and Jerry's? Bertrand.
  13. Greg, What are the exact recording dates for the tracks (including the bonus if you have it), or does the CD just say 'recorded between such and such a date'? Thanks, Bertrand.
  14. Short answer: most of this material, save a few tracks, has never ever ever ever been issued in any shape or form before, be it LP, CD, SACD, cassette or 8-track. Bertrand.
  15. From Back To School (Rodney Dangerfield): 'My wife, she gives good headache'. Bertrand.
  16. I can see the press release now: 'Blue Note announces a new series - the Blue Note booty calls. No cover art, no liner notes, just a CD-R in a generic CD case. All discographical information will contain a minimum of three errors or typos. This is the economical way that Blue Note has found to market obscure unissued sessions that the artists do not want released. Rejected sessions by such artists as Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean and Tyrone Washington will finally see the light of day. They will be pulled from the shelves as soon as lawsuits are threatened. The retail price point will be $19.99'. Bertrand.
  17. My favorite is from Chinatown: 'She's my sister' (slap) 'She's my daughter' (slap) 'She's my sister and my daughter' (slap, slap). Bertrand.
  18. Re-reading Jim's post, he remembered it was a saw. He just naturally thought Brooks instead of Waits. Bertrand.
  19. This post refers to the Lee Morgan question only. Jim was correct about the editing out, and answers a nagging question I have had for years. When Belden reissued the Lee Morgan 2-LP set a few years back (now OOP), he made a few creative changes. 1. He changed the title of the LP to the Last Session. Why? 2. On 'In What Direction Are You Headed', a solo that lasted about 2-3 minutes was mixed way down, so that the thing you hear most is the electric piano comping - which in itself is rather tedious. Nothing was excised, fortunately, but the instrument soloing is mixed way down so that you can hardly hear it. What instrument, you ask? For the longest time, I had no idea. It was some sort of 'whoo-whoo' sound, but I couldn't place it. I assumed it was some sort of acoustic or electric percussion effect from Waits, but I was stuck. Then, it dawned on me. Jim recalled Roy Brooks, but realized he was wrong. But Brooks is known (more than Waits) for his second instrument: the 'musical saw'! THAT'S WHAT IT WAS. I've been puzzled for years. And it also explains why Jim thought of Brooks. He sub-consciously remembered the saw, so naturally thought of Roy Brooks. Because of this, I kept my vinyl of Lee Morgan all these years. Purchased in mint condition for $4 at a yard sale. One of my greatest finds. Anyone else known for dablling in the 'musical saw'? Eddie Moore plays it on one track on Dewey Redman's Musics album. Bertrand.
  20. Does the Stavinsky come with it Bertrand.
  21. Merci, Guy! That was fast. I post the question, read the other forums, do a refresh and voila! Of course, based on this stellar line-up (I knew that was Hutch, but I didn't think of Elvin), the next obvious questions are: 1. Is there complete set of this concert out? I wonder if they only do 30 minutes like at Newport, or if they are longer sets? I would buy this in a heartbeat. 2. Whatever happened to Don Moore? Thanks, Bertrand.
  22. Which board member is it? He should be banned Bertrand.
  23. Sunday Morning is a great album, IMHO. I think the Connoisseur sounds fine, but some of you young whippersnappers may have missed it the first time around. Putting out Goin' West as an RVG, now that was a stroke of genius. Sounds awesome, too. Herbie kicks some serious ass on this record, and Billy Higgins is in top form. Bertrand.
  24. Tangentially related to this thread, any idea how I might find a copy of Moncur's Echoes Of Prayer? I passed up a reasonably priced copy a few years ago in Paris, and I've been kicking myself ever since. Any hope that it will show up on CD, my preferred medium? Thanks, Bertrand.
  25. I agree that if the Fantasy catalogue starts going amok under Concord, this would be an idea for Michael C. to pursue. I also agree with Mike that they have been doing a good job so far. If Blue Note had been doing what Fantasy did, Mosaic would probably never have been launched. The initial impetus seemed to focus on Blue Note stuff, although not exclusively. From the list on their site (on the last chance page), among #101-120, all but four are Blue Note or Pacific Jazz. If this does happen, what would be good ideas for box sets from the Fantasy catalog? A lot of the stuff not yet reissued by Fantasy is from artists with only a few titles on the label(s), so that might be tricky. Any obvious omissions that anyone can think of? Bertrand.
