Thanks Chuck. So we're not dealing with an edited opening bass solo. I listened to the tune in the subway on the way home. The breakdown is as follows: Bass intro: 0:00-0:02 Head: 0:02-0:48 Tenor sax solo: 0:48-2:19 Piano solo: 2:19-4:31 Head: 4:31-5:22 I thought I might have heard a splice during the tenor solo, so perhaps that's where the edit is. Since his solo is shorter than Monk's, he either took one less chorus (which is plausible since Monk is the leader) or one chorus was edited out. Alternatively, maybe there is a bass solo after piano solo which was edited out. Thanks in advance, Bertrand. P.S. I didn't count the number of choruses for each solo because the subway was too damn crowded - I couldn't concentrate enough, and these things are not instinctive for me, I have to count the beats.

I'm going to play it by ear whether I drive up or not, depending on the weather. Anyone else thinking of going? Bertrand.

I listened to the version of 'Think Of One' from the old Criss Cross CD (5:20 approximately). I noticed that it starts with a very brief (2-3 second) bass intro. Could this be an edited version of a 40-second bass intro? If not, then I will post a breakdown of the tune (length of head and solos) to try to see if anyone with the new version can catch the difference. Just because the new one doesn't talk about an edit doesn't mean it wasn't there. The remastered version of Monk. does not mention that it is Butch Warren, not Larry Gales, on 'Teo' (3/9/64). Bertrand.

When I have time, I'll try to call or go to the Smithsonian Archive and find out who the artist is. I may have to listen to the tape, which may or may not help. Right now, I have a higher priority: if all goes according to plan, I will be listening to the Carnegie Hall Monk/Trane tape on Friday. Knock on wood... Bertrand.

Before & after w/ Misha Mengelberg

I wonder if he wound up hooking up with Grachan. Bertrand. -
On another subject: can we name one composition we know for sure was written by Miles? I knew about 'Fran Dance' years ago, but there are some others that have surfaced in the last few years that turn out to not have been written by him. 'Donna Lee' is a good one to start with. Gil Evans said that Bird claimed that Miles wrote it. Do we have any other proof? (I trust Gil, this being said). How about all the tunes on Filles de Kilimanjaro (except for 'Tout de Suite', which is always credited to Miles and Gil)? Bertrand.

For the Larry Young, Art Blakey and Lee Morgan sets, I think they were OOP before the Mosaic web site ever existed, so no 'Mosaic style' discography there. I can give you the names of the corresponding albums/CDs with their availability status. If you want the contents, you can find a very rough draft (typos and all) at jazzdisco.org which has the entire BN discography. But this site is full of errors. Note that the entire Blakey set is currently available on CD now that Like Someone In Love is out as an RVG; this is the first time this has ever happened (except for the Mosaic). Art Blakey The Big Beat (RVG) A Night In Tunisia (RVG) Like Someone In Love (RVG) Roots And Herbs (regular reissue) The Witch Doctor (regular reissue) The Freedom Rider (regular reissue) Meet Me At The Jazz Corner Of The World (2-CD RVG) The 5 tracks that were part of the Japanese-only LP Pisces are split among the Roots And Herbs and Freedom Rider CDs Lee Morgan Indeed! Volume Two Volume Three (OOP) City Lights The Cooker Candy (regular reissue) Four of these have never been on CD in the U.S. (amazing!). They all have been out on CD in Japan (without the bonus track for Volume Three and The Cooker) as TOCJs and JRVGs. Volume Three was out in the U.S. with the bonus track, but now long OOP (it never made the Collectors' Choice series). So, to put together this set, you'll need to spring for Japanese pressings (except for Candy), and you'll be missing two alternates. Larry Young Talkin' About (Grant Green) (regular reissue) Street Of Dreams (Grant Green) (regular reissue) I Want To Hold Your Hand (Grant Green) (regular reissue) Into Somethin' (Connoisseur) Unity (RVG) Of Love And Peace (Connoisseur) Contrasts Heaven On Earth Mother Ship (Connoisseur) Contrasts and Heaven On Earth have never been out on CD anywhere, so you can't make a complete box. Also, it is rumored that there are four usable alternates to Unity that have yet to be issued. They are not listed in the BN discography. Bertrand.

As mentioned elsewhere, I will probably be at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware this Thursday 6/9. Anyone know any good record stores there? Is it worth my arriving early to investigate? Thanks, Bertrand.

I'm hoping to be at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware this Thursday 6/9 for Ingrid Jensen's organ group and Lou Donaldson with Dr. Lonnie Smith. Anyone else going? If so, send me a P.M. and maybe we can hook up. Bertrand.

Just checked the Mosaic website - the Art Pepper select is NOT being marketed as The Complete this or that in any way, so MC does not have to justify why he left out certain tracks. Interesting to see Pujol try to take a swipe at MC on one of his reissues. Bertrand.

I'll go Guy one further - just because Wayne and Herbie wrote intros doesn't necessarily mean they read the book! In this case, I suspect at least Wayne did, but remember Miles on 60 minutes when asked about a specific anecdote in the autobiograhy? He said he hadn't read it that far yet. Bertrand. -
Mosaic: rumored/possible/in-the-works/suggested
bertrand replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Toss in Super Nova and you have enough material for a select. Otherwise, each CD will only clock in at around 40 minutes (assuming the rejected session is 40 minutes). I think Cuscuna would find that a bit short. Bertrand. -
Le Choix Des Armes has Ron Carter and Buster Williams. Bertrand.

Very strange... I'll try to listen to the new version and A/B to my CD and see what the difference is. Or maybe Chris Sheridan has an idea. Bertrand.

I was looking at the iTunes database to see how much I was missing by owning the older version of Criss Cross (Columbia) without the bonus tracks. I saw that there are three bonus cuts (including the seldom-played 'Coming On The Hudson'), but I noticed something else: the version of 'Think Of One' on my CD is 5:18, but the iTunes database claims that the track is 6:04 in the remastered version. Was there an edit in the previous version? Does the new CD say anything about this? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.

Mikeweil, Thanks for the recommendation on the Joe Chambers. I need to find a copy of this! Anyone know where to find a reasonably priced one? Bertrand.

Has anyone ever heard the Joe Chambers piano solo album on Denon? Bertrand.

Upping this today for two reasons: 1. I googled 'Fred Jackson jazz' and saw a posting on some web site by the R & B guy where he distinguishes himself from the Blue Note tenor. Both Fred Jacksons are listed in Cuscuna/Ruppli as two separate players; I'll bet $1 that Tom Lord lumped 'em together on his CD. 2. What recordings are there by the Blue Note Fred Jackson? I know of: - Face To Face - Hootin' And Tootin' - Unissued session later part of the Hootin' Connoisseur - 'Cowbell Boogie' (from Lost Sessions); 3 rejected tracks at this session - John Patton Along Came John - John Patton Way I Feel Anything else by the Fred Jackson who appeared on the sessions above? I really enjoy his playing style, and would be curious to see if there's anything else on other labels. Problem is, will any of the discographers other than Cuscuna/Ruppli know to distinguish him from the other guy? Bertrand.

It's an F.B.I. sting. They're trying to kill two birds with one stone: 1. Nab everyone trading in Who bootlegs 2. Find evidence that Townshend dabbles in kiddie porn. Don't fall for it! Bertrand.
