  1. The song with the words: 'Blue Skiddoo, we can too' (or something like that) borrows a little bit of 'Rhythm-A-Ning'. Not enough to warrant a copyright infringement suit. Bertrand.
  2. God knows she gives us plenty enough opportunities otherwise. Bertrand.
  3. So, where can I get a reasonably priced copy of the Japanese CD? Alternatively, can the bonus track be purchased through iTunes or something of this nature? Is 'Zero Gravity' a Shorter composition? Thanks, Bertrand.
  4. AMG claims that this is the track order for Geroge Braith's Laughing Soul. Is this correct? Are the composers credits correct (AMG claims #9 is by Braith, but I know it's Dixon)? Is the title 'Chunky Cheeks' or 'Chunky Chicks'? Thanks, Bertrand. 1. Hot Sauce (Braith) 2. Chopsticks (Braith) 3. Chunky Cheeks (Ben Dixon) 4. Crenshaw West (Braith) 5. Please Let Me Do It (Braith) 6. Coolodge (Collage) (Braith) 7. With Malice Toward None (Tom McIntosh) 8. Little Flame (Braith) 9. Cantelope Woman (Ben Dixon)
  5. Apparently a 45 single came out with a short version of 'Our Miss Brooks' from this session. Is this just an edited version, or a different version recorded especially for the single (like the two tracks on Hubbard's Breaking Point)? If it's the latter case, why was this version not on the Connoisseur CD? Thanks, Bertrand.
  6. Any record with Jackie McLean on it automatically transcends the 'routine'. Bertrand.
  7. Thanks to everyone for their very kind wishes! I didn't go to the Clifford Brown Festival in the end; I just didn't feel like being outside and getting poured on. I did get to hear the Monk/Trane Carnegie Hall tape on Friday. I'll post my impressions later in the week. Bertrand.
  8. Robert, Is this tune a bona fide Shorter composition, or a group improv? How did you get the Japanese edition? The only ones I saw online are a fortune. Bertrand.
  9. Robert h, I can't believe they're doing this Japanese-only bonus cut thing again. I thought that was over, since Alegria did not have this problem. What's the name of the extra cut? Perhaps it will show up on itunes. Bertrand.
  10. I'll pass on the CD and buy the three extra cuts from itunes if they're available. Fortunately, I have the LP burned onto a CD. Bertrand.
  11. Thanks Jim, this fits perfectly. The missing 48 seconds are solved. Why on earth is it not mentioned on the new CD that this version is uncut? Bertrand.
  12. Thanks Chuck. So we're not dealing with an edited opening bass solo. I listened to the tune in the subway on the way home. The breakdown is as follows: Bass intro: 0:00-0:02 Head: 0:02-0:48 Tenor sax solo: 0:48-2:19 Piano solo: 2:19-4:31 Head: 4:31-5:22 I thought I might have heard a splice during the tenor solo, so perhaps that's where the edit is. Since his solo is shorter than Monk's, he either took one less chorus (which is plausible since Monk is the leader) or one chorus was edited out. Alternatively, maybe there is a bass solo after piano solo which was edited out. Thanks in advance, Bertrand. P.S. I didn't count the number of choruses for each solo because the subway was too damn crowded - I couldn't concentrate enough, and these things are not instinctive for me, I have to count the beats.
  13. I'm going to play it by ear whether I drive up or not, depending on the weather. Anyone else thinking of going? Bertrand.
  14. I listened to the version of 'Think Of One' from the old Criss Cross CD (5:20 approximately). I noticed that it starts with a very brief (2-3 second) bass intro. Could this be an edited version of a 40-second bass intro? If not, then I will post a breakdown of the tune (length of head and solos) to try to see if anyone with the new version can catch the difference. Just because the new one doesn't talk about an edit doesn't mean it wasn't there. The remastered version of Monk. does not mention that it is Butch Warren, not Larry Gales, on 'Teo' (3/9/64). Bertrand.
  15. When I have time, I'll try to call or go to the Smithsonian Archive and find out who the artist is. I may have to listen to the tape, which may or may not help. Right now, I have a higher priority: if all goes according to plan, I will be listening to the Carnegie Hall Monk/Trane tape on Friday. Knock on wood... Bertrand.
  16. I wonder if he wound up hooking up with Grachan. Bertrand.
  17. On another subject: can we name one composition we know for sure was written by Miles? I knew about 'Fran Dance' years ago, but there are some others that have surfaced in the last few years that turn out to not have been written by him. 'Donna Lee' is a good one to start with. Gil Evans said that Bird claimed that Miles wrote it. Do we have any other proof? (I trust Gil, this being said). How about all the tunes on Filles de Kilimanjaro (except for 'Tout de Suite', which is always credited to Miles and Gil)? Bertrand.
  18. For the Larry Young, Art Blakey and Lee Morgan sets, I think they were OOP before the Mosaic web site ever existed, so no 'Mosaic style' discography there. I can give you the names of the corresponding albums/CDs with their availability status. If you want the contents, you can find a very rough draft (typos and all) at jazzdisco.org which has the entire BN discography. But this site is full of errors. Note that the entire Blakey set is currently available on CD now that Like Someone In Love is out as an RVG; this is the first time this has ever happened (except for the Mosaic). Art Blakey The Big Beat (RVG) A Night In Tunisia (RVG) Like Someone In Love (RVG) Roots And Herbs (regular reissue) The Witch Doctor (regular reissue) The Freedom Rider (regular reissue) Meet Me At The Jazz Corner Of The World (2-CD RVG) The 5 tracks that were part of the Japanese-only LP Pisces are split among the Roots And Herbs and Freedom Rider CDs Lee Morgan Indeed! Volume Two Volume Three (OOP) City Lights The Cooker Candy (regular reissue) Four of these have never been on CD in the U.S. (amazing!). They all have been out on CD in Japan (without the bonus track for Volume Three and The Cooker) as TOCJs and JRVGs. Volume Three was out in the U.S. with the bonus track, but now long OOP (it never made the Collectors' Choice series). So, to put together this set, you'll need to spring for Japanese pressings (except for Candy), and you'll be missing two alternates. Larry Young Talkin' About (Grant Green) (regular reissue) Street Of Dreams (Grant Green) (regular reissue) I Want To Hold Your Hand (Grant Green) (regular reissue) Into Somethin' (Connoisseur) Unity (RVG) Of Love And Peace (Connoisseur) Contrasts Heaven On Earth Mother Ship (Connoisseur) Contrasts and Heaven On Earth have never been out on CD anywhere, so you can't make a complete box. Also, it is rumored that there are four usable alternates to Unity that have yet to be issued. They are not listed in the BN discography. Bertrand.
  19. As mentioned elsewhere, I will probably be at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware this Thursday 6/9. Anyone know any good record stores there? Is it worth my arriving early to investigate? Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. I'm hoping to be at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival in Wilmington, Delaware this Thursday 6/9 for Ingrid Jensen's organ group and Lou Donaldson with Dr. Lonnie Smith. Anyone else going? If so, send me a P.M. and maybe we can hook up. Bertrand.
  21. Just checked the Mosaic website - the Art Pepper select is NOT being marketed as The Complete this or that in any way, so MC does not have to justify why he left out certain tracks. Interesting to see Pujol try to take a swipe at MC on one of his reissues. Bertrand.
  22. Did they leave in the part where he whips out his dick? Bertrand.
  23. I'll go Guy one further - just because Wayne and Herbie wrote intros doesn't necessarily mean they read the book! In this case, I suspect at least Wayne did, but remember Miles on 60 minutes when asked about a specific anecdote in the autobiograhy? He said he hadn't read it that far yet. Bertrand.
  24. Toss in Super Nova and you have enough material for a select. Otherwise, each CD will only clock in at around 40 minutes (assuming the rejected session is 40 minutes). I think Cuscuna would find that a bit short. Bertrand.
  25. Le Choix Des Armes has Ron Carter and Buster Williams. Bertrand.
