  1. Exactly what Aric said. Bertrand.
  2. Congratulations! What are his plans next? May I offer one word of advice: 'Plastics'. Bertrand.
  3. Is this the 1966 'Orbits' or the 2003 'Orbits'? Bertrand.
  4. I'll be at both shows on Thursday (who knows when I'll get to see Jackie again - he only plays in NYC and Hartford). I'm 6'2 with a reddish beard and glasses. I'm also going on Friday. What can I say, I'm a Jackie nut. I have a unique opportunity to crash for free in my father's hotel (he's up there for a week for a physics conference), so I decided to go for it. As for the chops issue: I saw Jackie in 2000 at the all-star gig with Hutcherson, Hill and Higgins (the 3 h's). Jackie's playing was superb. I know he's been ill in the last couple of years, but my gut feeling is that if he knew he wasn't up to it, he would not show. Moncur is another story - I only expect he will play on one or two pieces, not the whole set. I know to be prepared. Through another site than that of the Iridium, I found out who the rest of the band was: Rene McLean (multi-reed), Alan Palmer (p), Nat Reeves (B) and Eric McPherson (d). Bertrand.
  5. Hardbopjazz, I will be there Thursday as well! Hope we can hook up. Bertrand.
  6. Larry Young's Contrasts and Heaven And Earth. Bertrand.
  7. Thanks. I actually was especially interested in Charles Davis' contribution. I saw him a few weeks ago and realized that I only have a couple of things he's on: 2 Kenny Dorham records, the Walton/Mobley Cobblestone date from 1972, Hubbard's The Body And The Soul (3 tracks) and Art Blakey's ultra-rare Golden Boy. I guess I was mostly wondering if the CD was fairly routine hard-bop, or more exciting than that. My guess is that Freddie alone makes it worth it. I always like Ronnie's playing - don't know much about Roland Alexander, though. Bertrand.
  8. Happy birthday! Bertrand.
  9. How is the Ronnie Mathews/Freddie Hubbard/Roland Alexander reissue on Fantasy? Are both LPs complete? Thanks, Bertrand.
  10. According to a blurb in today's Washington Post Express, Snoop Doggy Dogg is trying to put together a Miles biopic in which he would play the title role. He plans to learn to play the trumpet for this role. Bertrand.
  11. Rooster must be out for the evening...
  12. Happy birthday! Bertrand.
  13. Every home in the U.S. should have a copy of True Blue. Bertrand.
  14. Somebody at Blue Note effed up and the licensing for Moto Grosso Feio was given to One Way records. Of course, it is now long OOP. It was not clear to me if Blue Note will ever get the license back. Moto Grosso Feio is a crucial album in Wayne's discography, and it's a shame so few people have heard it. The title cut is one of his greatest compositions, in my opinion. Bertrand.
  15. I meet young folk all the time who are just getting into jazz and devouring it with a passion that I remember well from my younger days. Bertrand.
  16. Jazzbo, Actually, someone told me the Blue Moon sounded almost as bad as the Vee Jay partnership one. There's some wierd distortion in the drums that sounds totally unnatural. In fact, for all I know, this distortion may be in the tape and therefore still be present on the Mosaic. Never thought of asking here... The Shorter/Morgan Mosaic sounds great (except Wayning Moments), so if the tape is OK, I think the Mosaic will be OK. Anyway, I digress... Bertrand.
  17. Dr. J is on the money. I hardly ever upgrade, but when I do, it's because the original source sounds like such crap that *any* remastering would be an improvement. There's no need to sit down and do and A/B comparison. I put the new version in, and if the 'problem' is corrected, I'll know immediately. I also agree that the sound changes between CD players even with the same speakers and receivers, regardless of what the schmo at Circuit City says. I have one CD I would love to upgrade - the 1993 US version of Wynton Kelly's Kelly Great. The one I have is totally fucked up. Unfortunately, the only remastering is the soon to disappear Mosaic Kelly box, and I just can't justify buying this one which contains a lot of material I already have, when I have 5 Mosaics on my wish list that I still haven't gotten around to buying. Bertrand.
  18. Thanks couw. I'm glad I kept the vinyl. I was listening to a library copy of the CD last night, and I thought it didn't sound as good as I remembered. AND that 40-minute movie excerpt is boring as shit. I always supsected the movie was a dud. Bertrand.
  19. Quick question - The CD of Frank Zappa's Uncle Meat has some bonus tracks on disc two which are really just filler. The original sides one, two and three of the LP are now on disc one (side four is on disc two with the filler). What were the opening tracks to sides two and three on the vinyl? I vaguely remember that it was 'Sleeping In A Jar' and 'Mr. Green Genes' respectively, but my vinyl is in France and I can't find a listing on the net. Can anyone confirm my recollection? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  20. Didn't notice when I saw this in theatres, because I was too busy shaking my head in disbelief at how truly awful this movie was. Melanie Griffith lisping through the line 'I've got a head for business and a bod for sin'? Please! Bertrand.
  21. It turns out there was a typo in the Mosaic box - the track is actually called 'Hootnan', according to the copyright deposit and the first vinyl issues. Bertrand.
  22. Action is indeed an overlooked masterpiece. Bertrand.
  23. Tony Williams Lifetime - 'To Whom It May Concern - Them/Us' and 'Allah Be Praised', both from Turn It Over. Bertrand.
  24. Wayne once was quoted as saying something like: 'Composition is just improvisation slowed down' (I'm paraphrasing - I don't have the article handy). From my years of thinking of Wayne's music, I have never come across a better synopsis of his musical conception. Bertrand.
