NEW!!! Blue Note Europe Bulletin Board
bertrand replied to Aftab's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Out of sheer boredom, I read through the historical thread that Kevin posted. I agree with his basic sentiment that this is the kind of discussion that ultimately killed the old board, but I think he missed a couple of other issues raised by this thread. I am sure I will get some criticism, but so be it. 1. No one in this thread (except me) raised the fact of how GROTESQUELY inappropriate it was for Tom to name Norah Jones' boyfriend, especially in response to a query about her love life. Tom was, for all intents and purposes, her supervisor at Blue Note, in the sense where he no doubt would have a say as to whether she remained on the label or not if this issue were ever to come up for discussion. Therefore, discussing her private life on the internet ON THE COMPANY'S OWN OFFICIAL WEBSITE, was quite simply sexual harassment. If she wanted to file a grievance, she would have a strong case. Of course, theoretically the thread is gone from the official site, but it has been conveniently reproduced here... Only one person had the right to identify Lee Alexander on the BN board as Norah's boyfriend, and that would have been Norah herself, had she chosen to do so. Even Lee Alexander would have been out of line to do so (as he did on a thread on 'musicboy's' Norah Jones site, which was reproduced elsewhere here but I do not have time to search for it), but that would have been between Norah and him. The one and only response Tom should have given to halfnote was that it none of his business and a wholly inappropriate question. Which leads to a discussion of the whole monitoring issue... 2. If you recall, Aric had been banned for a while from the old BN board (before or after the Norah's boyfriend thread, I'm not sure). When Aric first appeared with a 'Is Horace Parlan gay thread' which was inappropriate in some many ways, I suggested by the only means I had (through the questions for Tom thread) that he should somehow be stopped from posting such things. I never talked about banning him, but some people jumped to that conclusion and gave me alot of grief. Eventually, Aric did go overboard and got banned, at least for a while. If Blue Note had actually bothered to set up a system to enforce the rules of conduct that we agreed to when we signed on, none of this would have happened. This happened again when Deep/Wingy made an appearance making fun of a musician for a personal health problem. I took him to task for this, and got a lot of heat from a few members (again, the banning thing was brought up, although I had never actually used that word). As a response, I started the most offensive thread I could think of (one having to do with mass murderers through history), and sure enough, the same people defending Deep/Wingy jumped on me, thereby falling into the trap I had set for them. Again, if Tom had just bothered to enforce the rules of conduct, none of this would have happened. Now, it's a different board. We are no longer on the website of a corporation tha thas an image to maintain, but on the private site of a jazz group that wishes to increase its exposure. The rule are different. B3-er can choose to censure Deep/Wingy when he starts his grotesquely homophobic thread (which may or may not be tongue-in-cheek - I have no way of knowing, since 95% I haven't got a fucking clue as to what he's prattling on about), or choose to let him be. He may suffer some consequences, but it his choice whether he wants to deal with the consequences. In this case, I know that one of our members (and a very highly-valued one at that) left on account of Deep's behavior, and it is this board's loss. Bertrand. -
Was Wayne there to collect his two grammies? He's supposed to be in Tokyo tonight, so I kind of doubt it. Bertrand.

Tom, Please accept my deepest condolences. Bertrand. -
The Soul Man with Wayne Shorter is another awesome one. Bertrand.

Don't miss it!!!

I was at the four gigs in Paris - they were simply outstanding. Wayne is at the top of his game RIGHT NOW - go see him. Bertrand.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Brownie last week in Paris. Brownie, Vincent (also on this board) and myself had drinks at a neat place called La Tartine in the Marais district (rue de Rivoli). We had a great time. I have been able to meet several board members in various cities around the world (this board and the old board). I love how the internet brings us together! I had an amazing time in Paris. I saw seven concerts in 10 days: 4 Wayne Shorter concerts, Milton Nascimento (without Wayne), Ravi Coltrane and Ralph Alessi, and Julian Priester. Wayne was outstanding - truly inspired by the French crowd. More details to come. Bertrand.

Is this sale in the brick and mortar stores as well? Bertrand.

Rooster, My thoughts are with you in this difficult time. Bertrand. -
Brownie, Were you at that concert? Did Johnny Coles really collapse onstage after 'So Long Eric'? Bertrand.

This is the worst case scenario, in my opinion: 1) Andrew will eventually agree to Dance With Death, but Compulsion will be first 2) Michael and Andrew will go through the 4 unreleased sessions, and pick out all the releasable tracks. One or two tracks per session will be 'rejected' (although Chained will probably be complete since the Japanese already OK-ed it), and the whole thing will be a two-CD Connoisseur. Then we weill be thrilled, although there will be a nagging doubt in our minds as to whether those rejected tracks are really all that bad ... Bertrand.

Blue Note logic: let's make a CD of this set as well, because you can't play DVDs in your car... BUT, the CD won't play in your car, because it's copy-protected! Bertrand. -
According to Leonard Feather's liner notes to Bossa Nova Bacchanal, she's a dancer friend of Rouse's. She co-wrote 'Un Dia', the lone original on this session. Who is she? She also co-authored some of the Jazz Modes tunes with Rouse, but she is NOT the vocalist on these dates - that would be one Eileen Gilbert, also unkown to me. Anyone have any info on her? Is she still living? I will do a google search, but will probably come up empty-handed. Thanks in advance, Bertrand.

So, can we also suggest a title for the Ervin/Shaw session? There was a thread on the BNBB and I think it was universally agreed that none of the tracks had titles that would make sense as an album title. I hope Michael picks a title fast - I'm so sick of people referring to this session as Back From The Gig that I could just SCREAM. Is this Booker's last session as a leader (and one of his last, period)? The title could revolve around that. Bertrand.

If I understand Michael's e-mail correctly, this is a box containing the DVD *plus* a CD of the same tracks, which was originally intended to be sold separately... BUT, the Cecil Taylor tune is not on the track listing he sent me! I'm more confused than ever: 1. Why would they put out the DVD, then a box with the CD and DVD? 2. Why did they decide to combine the two when they first supposed to be sold separately? 3. Why only highlights? Why not the whole thing? If I had known the box was coming out, I probably would have waited. Except I STILL would not have been happy, because I want the ENTIRE McLean/Shaw session, not just two cuts. Fortunately, I have a burn of the CD of Town Hall Volume Two from the public library. Whats's a Jackie completist to do? Bertrand. -
Andrew White told me there is a third JFK quintet record (on Riverside) in the can that has never seen the light of day. This one has Joe Chambers on drums, in what is probably his first recording session. Joe was the group's drummer in the tail end of its existence. Bertrand.

Is this a recent CD reissue? What label? This was out on Fantasy a long time ago, but then was deleted. Bertrand.

Just left a voice mail for Michael Cuscuna - I'll let you know if he has any more information. Bertrand. -
In my (biased opinion), the second Miles Quintet was its absolute peak during this '67 European tour. Everything I have heard is absolutely breathtaking. I like this far better than the Plugged Nickel stuff, if only because Miles is in top-shape (unlike the PN recordings). Brownie, I can't believe you were at the Pleyel concert. No Blues is just an incredible performance. By the way, I received your e-mail. I hope my reply went through, because I've been having e-mail trouble. I used the web version of my ISP, so I think it went through. Let me know if you did not receive it - it includes my contact info in Paris. Bertrand.

I just looked at the copyright deposits for these tunes the other day - even though the records didn't come up, most of them were still dutifully copyrighted. One slight difference - the BN discography says 'Orba' but the copyright deposit says 'Oriba'. Bertrand.

Brownie, I now that this is the official 'state-sanctioned' sales period and I was planning on checking out the record stores, although the dollar is at a historic low. I didn't think the prices would be that low, though. When do the sales end? I am flying out on 1/17 and will leave Paris on 1/27. Thanks, Bertrand.

Dan, I never researched this particular tune, but the general rule of thumb I have established over the years is: 'If Miles is given composer credit, seriously question the authenticity of this attribution'. There are many well-established instances of Prestige tunes attributed to Miles that are not by Miles, and a few cases that have not been publicized that I have been made aware of. Now for the tune you mention, a 'secondary rule-of-thumb' comes into play that muddies up the waters cosiderably. That rule is: 'If Coltrane is given composer credit, question the authenticity of this attribution'. This is the same rule as for Miles with the word 'seriously' omitted. In other words, neither Miles nor Trane may have written this tune. It just kind of was 'floating around in the air' at the time it was recorded, and the identity of the composer(s) may be lost forever. Miles may well have submitted an official copyright for 'Vierd Blues', but that means nothing. Bertrand.

Jim, Please send in the coupon to Tom Evered - I want to see his reaction! Bertrand.

Shoot - I was planning on nominating Sam and Dewey Redman. Now I have to choose. Bummer. Bertrand.

The record is so-so, but the same group did a KILLER concert in June 1992 at Wolf Trap. Go figure... Bertrand.
