  1. Vincent, Thanks. I think I have Bill Crow's e-mail somewhere - I will write to him. I got your e-mail and I tried to respond, but I'm having e-mail trouble again. I will get the information tonight or tomorrow and post it here (in artists, under Lee Morgan). I think it will be useful to other board members anyway. Bertrand.
  2. I need to find that book again and get my story straight. It may have been the reference to the concert jazz band that I was alluding to. The thing about 'Nellie Bly' was elsewhere - possibly something Michael Cuscuna had told me over the phone. How big was the concert jazz band? Bertrand.
  3. I was there one week-end and went to the Bop Stop. It was a nice club, and I think it has moved to a bigger location. Bertrand.
  4. In one of his two books, bassist Bill Crow says that the Wayne Shorter tune 'Nellie Bly' was part of the Mulligan songbook in th early sixties. I admit being almost totally ignorant of Mulligan's discography. Did he ever record it? Do we have any evidence that he played it in public other than Crow's claim (e.g., a concert review that names the tune specifically)? What size group was the arrangement written for? I know that Wayne arranged it for Maynard Ferguson's band during the month he was in it - perhaps Mulligan is uing the same arrangement? Note that Wayne originally recorded this as 'Mama G' on Wynton Kelly's Kelly Great (Vee Jay). This is usually considered Shorter's first recording session, although apparently some sideman date on Columbia may have preceded it... More to come. Bertrand.
  5. Larry Young's 'Ritha' - beautiful tune. Bertrand.
  6. I hope I didn't accidentally make a bid just by clicking on the link. I am an e-bay virgin and intend to remain so. Seriuoulsy, who knows if this isn't just multiple copies of Pat Boone records? Did anyone call this guy?
  7. The Struggle Continues is awesome. Too bad it probably will never make it to CD. Bertrand.
  8. Dan, Congratulations! If you do interview Bob Weinstock, ask him who the second horn on Mating Call was supposed to be Bertrand.
  9. I believe Rooster has mentioned his affection for Andrew Hill in passing in one or two postings.
  10. The British South Bank Show Blue Note documentary shows McCoy Tyner recording a brief tune at the RVG studios. This was filmed especially for the documentary. Bertrand.
  11. I'd like to hear Dewey Redman with Andrew Hill. Bertrand.
  12. It stops working at the exact time of day at which Art Blakey administered the fatal blow. Bertrand.
  13. There are tons of people who make substantial contributions to worthwhile charities every day without turning it into a publicity stunt. Obviously, we don't know their names or the amount of their contributions. Obviously, he was going to give the money to unimpeachable charities. He needs all the publicity he can get to off-set the negative publicity from that shooting incident he was involved in. When a tribute concert was held in November(?) 2001 to raise funds for a September 11th victims fund (it was mostly but not all jazz, and if I remember correctly, Michael Cuscuna was the producer), the review I read in Down Beat or Jazz Times mentioned that a good chunk of the money was contributed *anonymously* by one of the performers. Not only did this person give up his or her time, but he/she contributed a large amount of money, and got absolutely no publicity for it. Bertrand.
  14. J-Lo and Ben only coughed up the bread because Puffenstuff threatened to plug 'em otherwise. BTW, instead of running the marathon and boring our dicks off, why didn't he just poney up the cash from his own personal blow fund?
  15. There is only one Morgan composition on the record - 'Midtown Blues' is by McLean. Bertrand.
  16. Possibly Jimmy Greene? Bertrand.
  17. My tongue was firmly in my cheek in my previous posting!
  18. Wait, I'm confused... Your *real name* is connoisseur?
  19. Dewey can turn this concert into a killer. It really depends on what kind of arrangements will be used. Bertrand.
  20. Bon Anniversaire! Bertrand.
  21. Daniel, A very happy birthday to the guy who *always* thinks of me when anything Wayne Shorter-related comes up! Bertrand.
  22. For Claude (Schlouch): Welcome aboard! Bertrand.
  23. I think these tunes also appeared on a briefly available French LP in the 80s, perhaps called 'Isle Of Wight'. Side A was 'Call It Anythin'' from the Isle Of Wight Festival, side B was a bunch of otherwise unavailable singles ('Little Blue Frog' etc.) I assume all these tunes will be in one of the Miles boxes, but which? Bertrand.
  24. There's going to be a deluxe 4-CD edition next year, and then, two weeks later, they'll discover a reel with four more tracks in Coltrane's bathroom. Bertrand.
  25. I was able to make a brief trip there at lunch today. A *very cursory* first glance at the lead sheet for '18th Hole' seems to show that it is consistent (at least for the first few bars) with the tune that has that title on The Flip. In this case, the track on The Breakthrough should be called '18th Hole', not 'Early Morning Stroll'. Now what Hank had in mind is a whole 'nother ball game. Who knows who sent in these leads sheets for copyright. More to come... Bertrand.
