  1. The Reverend Baker's mission was not a total loss - at least they said grace before eating him.
  2. Ornette played at Carnegie Hall in late June.
  3. Richard Williams also was in the Gigi Gryce quintet near the end of Gigi's career and appears on 3 albums: Sayin' Somethin' The Happ'nins Rat Race Blues
  4. Maybe the other tracks on Agents Of Fortune didn't have enough cowbell for him?
  5. I hope this doesn't turn into another one of those 'how do you get sticky stuff off a CD' thread.
  6. John, How do you propose we do that Bertrand.
  7. Up for air. I will be there tomorrow.
  8. At the John Patton gig I saw on 8/11/01 at the Fat Cat, NYC, they played 'The Cat' by Lalo Schifrin, which is of course the title track to a Verve Jimmy Smith album. I had to ask Ronnie Cuber what the tune was - I had never heard the album. I thought they had played a speeded-up 'Rumproller'! Bertrand.
  9. McCoy should be getting royalties for his five compositions on the CD, but otherwise, you are correct, they get no other payment (neither leader nor sidemen). If he is not getting royalties for his compositions, then either the person administering his publishing, or more likely EMI, is not doing their job. Hank Mobley's heir was his father, who lived very long - although I suspect he has passed away by now. I believe he had Hank very young. Hank may have had some half-siblings as well. Bertrand.
  10. jmjk, Thanks for posting that. I guess they still are not doing the protection thing, at least for now. Please tell me 'affect' is a typo on your part, not on theirs! Bertrand.
  11. I assume these are definitely not copy protected, then? Thanks, Bertrand.
  12. A release that dwarfs the new connoisseurs! Congratulations! The trick is to have the second child after the first has gone to College, or at least when he's old enough to baby-sit!
  13. This Wednesday, as part of their series on Washington DC-based artists, Strathmore Hall in Rockville MD (right at the Grosvenor metro) will have a tribute to Charlie Rouse and Leo Parker(!) at 7:30 this Wednesday, 10/8. The performers will be tenor/baritone Chris Watling and his quartet. I spoke to Chris (http://www.geocities.com/chriswatling) and he has a nice repertoire lined up - he did some research and even found a date they did together. Tickets are only $10 (301-530-0540). Hope to see you there! Bertrand.
  14. I had read in the Washington Post that EMI would not be copy controlling the US CDs. Where did you get your info?
  15. Re: the Lionel Ritchie comment. Saxophonist Bootsie Barnes does a very lovely version of 'Hello' on his album of the same name. So you never know.
  16. I once saw an episode of Groucho's You Bet Your Life where the guest contestants were George Bernard Shaw (in the winter of his life) and the up-and-coming comedienne, Phyllis Diller. Talk about a match-up!
  17. But, fortunately, the Arista dates are NOT our last glimpse at Larry Young. There is also Double Exposure, the 1977 duets album with Joe Chambers. Larry is not the leader, but he plays some very nice things on this. Bertrand.
  18. If they want weird, they should check out the message board at www.herbiehancock.com Some guys started a campaign to get him to play at a Washington Capitals game. Whatever. Bertrand. P.S. Which one of you is it
  19. Who are the composers of the tunes on Rouse's album? Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. And the answer is .... The vibes. Bertrand.
  21. That's what my Collector's Choice says! But, out of respect for his holiness who is apparently on his last legs, I will refrain from posting further on this matter. http://story.news.yahoo.com/fc?cid=34&tmpl...pe_John_Paul_II What a yahoo this cardinal is! He's one of the candidates, so he's going around announcing to people that the person he may replace is in his final days? First Waldheim, then Arnold, now this jack-off. I'm embarrassed to be half-Austrian. Bertrand.
  22. Nope - it was another instrument before alto horn and trumpet. Bertrand.
  23. If I posted this on the 'old board' already, I apologize. For some strange reason, I can't seem to do a search on their archives... I got this info straight from Lee's brother Jimmy, so you know it's true. Before he picked up the trumpet, Lee Morgan tried out another instrument for a year. Anyone care to venture a guess? Bertrand.
  24. We could start a sub-thread with Blue Note alone: 1. Lee Morgan's The Rajah has Billy Higgins listed on drums on the front, but on the back it says Gene Taylor (the bassist?) 2. Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue has an incorrect year of recording 3. Woody Shaw's 'Boo Ann's Grand' is listed as 'Boo Ann's Grind' on Demon's Dance 4. Cal Massey's 'The Cry Of My People' is listed as 'The City Of My People' on The Sixth Sense 5. Hank Morley is listed on the actual label as the leader on my vinyl copy of High Voltage 6. And of course, there's my favorite, the blasphemous-sounding Finger Popin' There are others, I'm sure. Bertrand.
  25. I spoke to Robin Kelly two weeks ago. I think his book will be out within a year or two, and I think he's uncovered a lot of good stuff. I'm looking forward to it. Bertrand.
