  1. This Wednesday, as part of their series on Washington DC-based artists, Strathmore Hall in Rockville MD (right at the Grosvenor metro) will have a tribute to Charlie Rouse and Leo Parker(!) at 7:30 this Wednesday, 10/8. The performers will be tenor/baritone Chris Watling and his quartet. I spoke to Chris (http://www.geocities.com/chriswatling) and he has a nice repertoire lined up - he did some research and even found a date they did together. Tickets are only $10 (301-530-0540). Hope to see you there! Bertrand.
  2. I had read in the Washington Post that EMI would not be copy controlling the US CDs. Where did you get your info?
  3. Re: the Lionel Ritchie comment. Saxophonist Bootsie Barnes does a very lovely version of 'Hello' on his album of the same name. So you never know.
  4. I once saw an episode of Groucho's You Bet Your Life where the guest contestants were George Bernard Shaw (in the winter of his life) and the up-and-coming comedienne, Phyllis Diller. Talk about a match-up!
  5. But, fortunately, the Arista dates are NOT our last glimpse at Larry Young. There is also Double Exposure, the 1977 duets album with Joe Chambers. Larry is not the leader, but he plays some very nice things on this. Bertrand.
  6. If they want weird, they should check out the message board at www.herbiehancock.com Some guys started a campaign to get him to play at a Washington Capitals game. Whatever. Bertrand. P.S. Which one of you is it
  7. Who are the composers of the tunes on Rouse's album? Thanks, Bertrand.
  8. And the answer is .... The vibes. Bertrand.
  9. That's what my Collector's Choice says! But, out of respect for his holiness who is apparently on his last legs, I will refrain from posting further on this matter. http://story.news.yahoo.com/fc?cid=34&tmpl...pe_John_Paul_II What a yahoo this cardinal is! He's one of the candidates, so he's going around announcing to people that the person he may replace is in his final days? First Waldheim, then Arnold, now this jack-off. I'm embarrassed to be half-Austrian. Bertrand.
  10. Nope - it was another instrument before alto horn and trumpet. Bertrand.
  11. If I posted this on the 'old board' already, I apologize. For some strange reason, I can't seem to do a search on their archives... I got this info straight from Lee's brother Jimmy, so you know it's true. Before he picked up the trumpet, Lee Morgan tried out another instrument for a year. Anyone care to venture a guess? Bertrand.
  12. We could start a sub-thread with Blue Note alone: 1. Lee Morgan's The Rajah has Billy Higgins listed on drums on the front, but on the back it says Gene Taylor (the bassist?) 2. Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue has an incorrect year of recording 3. Woody Shaw's 'Boo Ann's Grand' is listed as 'Boo Ann's Grind' on Demon's Dance 4. Cal Massey's 'The Cry Of My People' is listed as 'The City Of My People' on The Sixth Sense 5. Hank Morley is listed on the actual label as the leader on my vinyl copy of High Voltage 6. And of course, there's my favorite, the blasphemous-sounding Finger Popin' There are others, I'm sure. Bertrand.
  13. I spoke to Robin Kelly two weeks ago. I think his book will be out within a year or two, and I think he's uncovered a lot of good stuff. I'm looking forward to it. Bertrand.
  14. Who's on the Michelot CD? This sounds tempting. What tunes do they do? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  15. I plan to buy the BN DVD when it come out... However, is there any way to find the four VHS tapes without spending a fortune? I know there are thousands of Woody Shaw videos out there, but I wouldn't mind having this one as well. Bertrand.
  16. One of my favorite organ records. This one just rocks from start to finish. What is incredible is that all this noise is produced by three people (four if you count the conga). Grant and John are of one mind throughout the whole thing, and there are some passages where they are in total unison. It hasn't been specifically alluded to yet, but I love the arrangement of Duke Pearson's 'Amanda' with which they close. I had the chance to hear Patton play this piece the one time I saw him (8/11/01), just a few months before he died. John really gets to the heart of this beautiful melody. I LOVE this record. Bertrand. P.S.: Does Richard Landrum play on all tracks? I don't always hear it, even though the BN disco says he does.
  17. He should pay people $50 to take Blood On The Fields off his hands! Bertrand.
  18. Stefan and I are going. Anyone else? Bertrand.
  19. CDuniverse list this as being on sin-drome records. What's up with that, before I order the thing? Bertrand.
  20. On the topic of Caramba... Is it just me, or is there audible surface noise on the bonus track, 'A Baby's Smile'? You would think this was the one tune that *had* to come from the Master Tape. Bertrand.
  21. Up... Before I pre-order these, do we know if they will be copy-protected in the U.S.? Bertrand.
  22. Dan, The soundtrack is obviously not on Blue Note - that's clear to me. The fact that Hank bothered to bring it up in the interview indicates that the session must have taken place. What did he have to gain by making it up? Perhaps Ian McDonald or Sam Miller can shed some light... Bertrand.
  23. There's still the soundtrack to the movie about the Franco-Algerian war, as mentioned in the Litweiler interview posted elsewhere... Bertrand.
  24. What are the differences (if any) between the Monk composition 'Hackensack' and the tune labelled 'Lady Be Good' that appears on Kenny Burrell On View At The Five Spot? How does either tune relate to Gershwin's 'Lady Be Good'? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  25. Grachan Moncur's 2 BYG dates could fit nicely on one CD... Bertrand.
