If you look real carefully at this picture, you can see Lee Morgan faintly in the background, and I believe...YES! HE'S WEARING A SURGICAL BANDAGE AROUND HIS HEAD!!! Bertrand.

What ever happened to Helen More?
bertrand replied to doubleM's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
None of the Lee biographers I have spoken to have determined the fate of Helen More. The unverified story that is circulating is that she served a very short prison term (six months). She is said to have died within the last decade - she was 14 years older than Lee. Fortunately, the rights to his music reverted to his wife Kiko Yamamoto (they were never divorced). Helen More could not have been his common law wife as is often stated, since he still had a wife at the time of his death. Bertrand. -
Daniel, That would make sense. The whole thing is a kind of weird-angle shot of a church organ. This is a Larry Young record, after all! Bertrand.

Someone on the old board had claimed this was a picture of the Twin Towers of the WTC. Now that I finally see a large picture, I'm sure it is NOT. There's at most one building in the picture (is that a building?) and it could be any building. Bertrand.

There are two other color pictures of Larry in the softcover book of Frank Wolff photos. Jim, I have never seen the cover of Heaven On Earth - please hip us to it. Bertrand.

I didn't know it had posted at all! I was getting an error message to the effect that my e-mail failed. Let's see how this message works... Bertrand.

According to the ad in Downbeat, and the Hyena site, the first Monk CD from Hyena records will include a free DVD of Monk In Oslo. Very cool idea, which suits me well since I just got a DVD player! Anyone know the set list, dates, and personnel? Thanks, Bertrand.

I'm too fucking lazy to look. If I order three of the Connoisseurs for $12.59 from CDUniverse, what's my shipping charge? Thanks, Bertrand.

Hmmm... October 18 is a Saturday ... Hmmm. Bertrand. -
There was definitely a video in the "Vanguard" series (4 videos in all, including one of Freddie Hubbard' group) - now OOP, alas. I think the personnel was the same, so I always assumed it was from the same session. What does the Woody Shaw discography say? I could be wrong. Bertrand.

Speaking of the copy protection... A friend of mine in France has always been buying US pressings of BN CDS. He orders them from Tower, and says that, even with the overseas shipping charge, it's cheaper than buying them in France and paying the VAT! I don't know if he saves on shipping by buying in bulk, and I don't know if France does the same import tax thing as the U.K.... My two thoughts on the copy protection thing: With my CD burner, I can make mix CDs of BN material which I use at my occasional lectures. Several people have gone out and bought multiple BN CDs as a result of these lectures (this music sells itself) - one guy is so obsessed with Wayne, I sometimes have to cut him short when I'm busy at work and he comes over to chat. Imagine, me having to tell someone: 'I don't have time to talk about Wayne Shorter right now'! In short, Blue Note/EMI or whoever made the decision to put copy protection on the European pressings are FUCKING IDIOTS. It's the single most moronic decision in the history of the company (which includes such decisions as signing that lame-ass Kurt Elling). Bertrand.

Weren't some of these performances on Video as well? Didn't get the video when I had the chance. Perhaps some of the tunes in the videos are not on the CDs... Bertrand.

This came up on the 'old board' and the resolution was as follows: There were probably *two* pressings of the old McMaster CD. One had the correct cues, the other incorrect. When it came out again as a Collector's Choice, they were faithful to the premise of this series: it was reissued 'as is' with no corrections. Hence, the CC had the *incorrect* cues. Which was totally moronic, of course, since a version with correct cues had existed - this is what they should have used for the CC series. I found my McMaster copy used, and it has the correct cues. The cuing error stems from the fact that there is a very long pause between the bridge of 'Saturday And Sunday' and the repetition of the 'A' section (the tune has an AABA type head). Whoever made the cues between tracks did not wait until the 'A' section had been repeated to start the cue for the next track. I never heard the flawed version, but I believe the error was in both the alternates and master takes of 'Saturday And Sunday', and of course spilled over into 'Frankenstein'. Bertrand.

I have yet to own Blue Train! If I get the RVG, I will have to make do without the CD-ROM features of The Ultimate. Can I live without 'em (especially since some people had trouble with these on their PC)? Bertrand.

Soul Stream, We still have the rejected Wayne Shorter, Jackie McLean (with Tyrone Washington, Woody Shaw and Bobby Hutcherson), and Kenny Dorham (with Grant Green) sessions to look forward to hearing! Bertrand.

MacDonald Book on Dameron
bertrand replied to Brad's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I definitely want to read this. A friend of mine had a copy, and the lay-out looked great. I did not get to read the text, however. There is already a mistake in the article above (which was probably corrected in the book after the Lost Sessions came out). 'The Elder Speaks' is a Sam Rivers tune; he even copyrighted it. I hope Don Sickler hipped McDonald to all of the unrecorded tunes at the Library of Congress - there are a lot of them. As I mentioned elsewhere, saxophonist Paul Combs is also working on a Dameron book. Based on our discussions, I think it will be excellent. Bertrand. -
But what does he mean by 'The Latin release'? Bertrand.
