  1. There is only one Morgan composition on the record - 'Midtown Blues' is by McLean. Bertrand.
  2. How come none of this is mentioned in Leslie Gourse's 'definitive' Blakey bio. I want a refund!!! Bertrand.
  3. Possibly Jimmy Greene? Bertrand.
  4. My tongue was firmly in my cheek in my previous posting!
  5. Wait, I'm confused... Your *real name* is connoisseur?
  6. Dewey can turn this concert into a killer. It really depends on what kind of arrangements will be used. Bertrand.
  7. Bon Anniversaire! Bertrand.
  8. Daniel, A very happy birthday to the guy who *always* thinks of me when anything Wayne Shorter-related comes up! Bertrand.
  9. For Claude (Schlouch): Welcome aboard! Bertrand.
  10. I think these tunes also appeared on a briefly available French LP in the 80s, perhaps called 'Isle Of Wight'. Side A was 'Call It Anythin'' from the Isle Of Wight Festival, side B was a bunch of otherwise unavailable singles ('Little Blue Frog' etc.) I assume all these tunes will be in one of the Miles boxes, but which? Bertrand.
  11. There's going to be a deluxe 4-CD edition next year, and then, two weeks later, they'll discover a reel with four more tracks in Coltrane's bathroom. Bertrand.
  12. I was able to make a brief trip there at lunch today. A *very cursory* first glance at the lead sheet for '18th Hole' seems to show that it is consistent (at least for the first few bars) with the tune that has that title on The Flip. In this case, the track on The Breakthrough should be called '18th Hole', not 'Early Morning Stroll'. Now what Hank had in mind is a whole 'nother ball game. Who knows who sent in these leads sheets for copyright. More to come... Bertrand.
  13. Following up on the '18th Hole'/'Early Morning Stroll' confusion: I remember that back on the old board, someone (Aric?) mentioned that 'No Room For Squares' and 'Up A Step' were also inverted. Do I have these right? Are these the two tunes that were supposedly switched? I could check all four Mobley tunes. The Library of Congress has been helpful in the past in clearing up these kinds of controversies. I was able to decide between Wayne Shorter's 'Harry's Last Stand' and 'Blues A La Carte' which was which. Sometimes, they cause more confusion. The copyright deposits for Jackie McLean's 'It's Time' and 'Snuff', both from It's Time, are inverted. This time, however, my guess is that it's the copyright deposits that are wrong, and that the record has it right. The one called 'Snuff' on the record is the same tune as 'Iddy Bitty' (from the untitled 1962 session with KD), and I just don't see that tune being retitled as 'It's Time' (although that's what the copyright deposit seems to say). I'll let you know if I reach any conclusion on those two pairs of Mobley tunes. Bertrand.
  14. Just print out this thread and give him a copy! Bertrand.
  15. Completely unrelated to the current crop but - did anyone ever notice a lot of static on the 'regular' reissue of Caramba on the bonus track 'A Baby's Smile'? Thanks, Bertrand.
  16. Aric, Why don't you call up Lou and ask him?
  17. OOPS! Revisiting this thread, I see that some people did not realize that I TOTALLY made up that story about the cowbell on 'Un Poco Loco'. Sorry about the confusion! Bertrand.
  18. Good to hear that Jackie was sounding good. I just found out he will be in NYC in December. I will be there. Bertrand.
  19. Brownie, Hank Jones is on Flute-In! That's hilarious! Here's why: Last month, Hank and Elvin played in D.C. Hank was handed a piece of paper with the name of a musician on it who was about to sit in. Hank made the announcement, but thought Bobbi was a guy! And now it turns out he actually recorded with her. Shows how much of an impression she made. Bertrand.
  20. The sketch was actually a clever allusion to the recording session for Bud Powell's 'Un Poco Loco'. Alfred Lion thought that Max Roach was using too much cowbell. That's why they did several takes of the tune. If you listen carefully, you'll notice that the cowbell on the Master take is a lot more muted. Blue Note legend has it that Max and Alfred almost had a fistfight over this issue. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in Richard Cook's book. Bertrand.
  21. I listened to this yesterday and noticed that the track called 'Early Morning Stroll' on The Breakthrough is the same as the one called '18th Hole' on The Flip. I will look at the copyright deposits at the Library of Congress next time I'm there. I know that both these tunes are in the Mobley box. I'm no musician, but my rudimentary piano skills should be enough to figure out what's what. Bertrand.
  22. I got lucky - I got my TOCJ during a Tower clearance sale for about $17 two years ago. Bertrand.
  23. Has anyone figured out where the four live tracks that exist on the current version of Live/Evil fit in? Since they have McLaughlin, I guess they are on dics 5-6. The titles are 'Sivad', What I Say', 'Funky Tonk' and 'Inamorata'. Bertrand.
  24. In the liner notes to Passing Ships, Cuscuna says that Woody Shaw covered two Andrew Hill compositions on his own recordings: 'Symmetry' and 'Catta'. Now 'Symmetry' is on Iron Man, but I can't find any session where Woody did 'Catta' (I checked the discography by Todd Poyner that resides on Mike Fitzgerald's site). Could Cuscuna have been thinking of Joe Chambers' version of 'Catta' which appears on The Almoravid? Woody plays on two tracks on this album, but not 'Catta'. Bertrand.

    Albert Ayler

Brownie, I recall an interview with Alain Corneau in Jazz Magazine where he said he had gone to New York in the mid-60s to film some musicians, including Ayler, but he did not get any footage of them. I think he did interview Bud Powell (who was living in a rat-hole) and filmed him. Are you still in touch with Corneau? Do you know if he has any Bud footage? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
