  1. Oh, and are you going to try to go to the trombone competition? Bertrand.
  2. Leeway, Keep an eye out for me on your way out (I might be in line for the next show) - maybe we can chat five minutes. I'm 6-2, 225 lbs., with a beard and glasses. If they do play new tunes during the first set, it would be great if you could try to get the titles. I would need them for my own-going project of inventorying the compositions of many of these composers, although for Monk, Chris Sheridan's book has a great inventory already. But he doesn't know about these new pieces... Bertrand.
  3. If the board does come back up, I have a suggestion on how to improve their censorship software. Rather than replace offending words or groups of letters with ***, as in 'en***led', 'b***' (for bass), '******ian', and 'mother******', they could take a cue from our friends in Belgium, the creators of the comic strip the Smurfs (Schtroumpf in the original French). All offending words or groups of letters could be replaced by the word 'smurf'. For example, this would yield: 'You are of course ensmurfled to your own opinion, but I think bsmurfist Smurfian McBride is a mothersmurfer'. Bertrand.
  4. It's BN's pathetic way of justifying to EMI why EMI should spend the 'big bucks' to reissue this album. Blue Note hits a low note. If only Fantasy could buy BN and add it to their umbrella of companies. I can dream, can't I... Bertrand.
  5. Please delete this thread.
  6. That's damning it with faint praise.
  7. I'll be at the second set. If you are going to the second set also, I'll give you my seat number and we can meet after (or before?). I suspect the 'new compositions' thing is an error on the Kennedy Center's part, but I hope to be disproven. Unless they mean 'Two Timer/Five Will Get You Ten'... T.S. Monk is (not coincidentally) also in town for the Monk trombone competition. I'll post the details in Live Shows. Bertrand.
  8. The Vamp they play in this version of 'Sidewinder' is from a Freddie Hubbard tune called 'Clarence's Place' (The Body And The Soul, Impulse!, 1963). When the Lighthouse set came out, I was really puzzled how Lee would have known this tune - it is hardly one of Hubbard's best known. I have the theory that since Freddie wrote it when he was still with Blakey, perhaps it was part of the Messengers' repertoire, and just didn't make it onto any live or studio recordings (official or not). Any other ideas? Bertrand.
  9. Don't know, but I recommend that the week John Patton's Got A Good Thing Goin' is released in the U.S. (sometime in May, right?), this be the album of the week. I just LOVE that record. Bertrand.
  10. Brad, Good decision. The last thing you want to do is clog up your new septic system by flushing a Mizell Brothers production down the toilet
  11. When Blues For Lou came out, there was a ton of whining on the old board about how much they hated it yada yada yada. I knew that when it went OOP, someone would start looking for it! Good luck, Big Al. I know I'm keeping mine. Bertrand.
  12. Sorry about the late notice, I've had some computer problems in the last two weeks, but I'm back in business. I was able to post a couple of times from work, but I was so busy at work this week I never got to post this announcement. Tonight, 4/18, at 7:00 PM, Noal Cohen and fellow Organissimo member Mike Fitzgerald will be at the Border's books in D.C. at 18th and L (Farragut North or West metro stops) to present and discuss their excellent Gigi Gryce bio, Rat Race Blues. They will be interviewed by Larry Appelbaum. The Frankie Addison quartet will perform a few Gryce classics. I hope some of you see this in time. Again, sorry for the late notice. Hope you can make it, Bertrand.

  14. Which one of the bidders is most likely to reissue te Argo/Cadet catalog? Bertrand.
  15. Another idea - maybe Chris Sheridan would know. I believe he is at work on a bio-disco of Milt similar to his Basie, Adderley, and Monk bio-discos. Vincent, do you have his e-mail? If not, I will try to dig it up. Bertrand.
  16. This is a very tricky question. We either need to find an exhaustive discography of Milt Jackson, or, if he never recorded it himself, then find a way to search the Lord by song title. Is that what you already tried, John, or did you just search the Milt Jackson portion of the Lord? Bertrand.
  17. Moto Grosso Feio and Odyssey of Iska were *not* recorded on the same day, no matter what the liner notes to Moto Grosso say. When they dug this session up, Wayne remembered the date as being 8/26/70, but I think he was confusing it with Odyssey. I believe the BN bible gives a date of April 1970 for Moto Grosso Feio. Bertrand.
  18. Soul Stream, When you buy it, make sure you have all 3 CDs. I bought it upon release, but there were two CD # 3 and no CD # 2. Tom Evered promptly sent me a replacement CD, however. Bertrand.
  19. Red, I have the TOCJ of this album. I love it - one of my favorite Blue Notes. Does the rare groove have any bonus cuts (hopefully not)? The TOCJ has five tracks: The Yodel Soul Woman Ain't That Peculiar The Shake Amanda Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. Yeah, Albert Ayler is really 'big' these days! Bertrand.
  21. Hard to choose, but I went with Wayne just because he KICKED ASS in Bethlehem, PA last night. What does this poll really prove? How brilliant a musician Lee was. I can't think of a trumpet player who fit in more hand-in-glove with so many incredibly different sax players, including some not even mentioned in the poll. Not even Miles, nor Brownie, nor Freddie could sneak in to the skin of some many great altos and tenors. And even baritones - his pairing with Pepper Adams on The Cooker just floors me every time. Flame away... Bertrand.
  22. John, An unrelated topic - but I'm experiencing technical difficulties! I did get your e-mail two days ago, but before I could reply, my connection was lost. We are in middle of changing providers, so there is some down-time. I will e-mail you as soon as I'm back up (I can't easily e-mail from work), although it could take a while. They sent us the new software on a CD, but my CD-ROM drive has also been acting up! I may have to get a new computer (and a second job to pay for it). Bertrand.
  23. Kevin, Great job. I started thinking about contacting the author when I read about the missing headstone, but you beat me to it. I still need to contact him for another reason. Do you know how long they intend to collect money? I know something similar was done for Fats Navarro a couple of years ago - I wonder how long it took them to gather the funds needed. I remember on the 'previous board' that there were discussions about the Larry Young estate and how all the royalty money was in escrow. Did Guy say that he was going to get in touch with Blue Note about this? Between Althea and the kids from different mothers, this could get real hairy... If any tribute/benefit takes place, I will really try to be there. Bertrand.
  24. Hmmm... Now you guys have me wondering if I got my information wrong. I thought for along time that the Fresh Sound stuff was from S.F., and then I could have sworn someone told me it was really from the Lighthouse. I can't remember who told me this or how reliable a source he/she was. What did Belden say? That no dates before the BN ones were ever recorded? That would contradict what I was told. But then Maupin was there, so you think he would remember. Bertrand.
