Andrew Hill Quartet - Iowa City Jazz Festival
bertrand replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Michael Cuscuna told me that the title of this CD will be Passing Ships. Some tunes were also renamed (or given a name). I will look for the e-mail. Bertrand. -
It is my understanding that some of Alegria was recorded before Footprints Live!, and some parts more recently. Bertrand.

I'll be driving up from DC with a friend for this concert. Anyone else going? I'm in seats BB12-14. See you there, Bertrand.

Quick! Someone alert Ed Swinnich!

I taught my three-year old son Matthew how to silly-walk. We'll be walking, and he'll just spontaneously burst into it. There's a job waiting for him at the Ministry of Silly Walks. Oh, and I also taught him how to recognize Lee Morgan's trumpet attack. Bertrand. -
I’m off to Paris (France) tomorrow. We all need the vacation desperately. I know this was covered on the old board, but I never printed the threads. Does anyone know any obscure stores with a surprisingly good stash of jazz CDs (or vinyl)? I'm definitely going to hit a couple of FNACS and the Virgin on the Champs-Elysees, and of course Paris Jazz Corner. But are there any others worth checking out? I also will hit he big 4-0 on Monday. Ouch! Thanks in advance, Bertrand.

Thanks for the info everyone. Dmitry, is the Smoke session all night long? Bertrand.

I just found out that sadly, that great little joint that was Small's is closed. Does anyone know of any all-night jams like they used to have in some other club? Or any all-night place to hang-out in NYC? I was thinking of going up June 28th for the Shorter Carnegie Hall bash, but instead of getting a hotel, I was thinking of just hanging out until taking a bus back that Sunday afternoon. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.

Cali, Sidewinder, Both Sproles and Merritt are tall guys, so either fits the bill. If Wayne and Curtis were in the group as well, then we have the two following options (since it is not Reggie): 1. It was Merritt, and then the gig would have been 1961 or 1962. Jymie was still in the group for a while after Curtis joined. Bobby Timmons was on piano for the first sextet record (on Impulse!), then was replaced by Walton. Reggie replaced Jymie later, after a couple of Blue Notes. 2. It was Sproles, and then it would be 1965. In that case, Wayne was about to be replaced by John Gilmore - this might have been one of his last gigs. Cedar was also about to replaced by Hicks. There are no recordings of a sextet with Shorter and Sproles, at least that I know of. Mike Fitzgerald's chronology could probably help us solve this mystery (it might tell us when Blakey played at that club), but I can't get to it right now. Very interesting! Bertrand.

Anyone? I'm dying to know... Bertrand.
-
Cali, If it was '63 or '64, it probably was Reggie Workman (and 1964). If you are sure it was Merrit, however, then it would have to have been 1960 or 1961. Jymie left the band in 1961 or 1962, and I don't think he came back later for a spell. I could check Mike's Fitzgerald's Blakey chronology, but it's late. You are lucky to have met these master musicians. I was born in 1963. Bertrand.

Daniel, Good luck! See you in September. Bertrand.

Yesterday, I saw the following CD at the daedalus outlet in Columbia, MD (www.daedalusbooks.com). Jazz All Stars: Live in Hi-Fi—1950s FM Broadcasts There are three cuts with Mingus: Confirmation, Just Bohemia, and What Is This Thing Called Love. The CD listed a recording date of 1957 (Cafe Bohemia), but the only personnel listed was Phineas Newborn added on 'Love'. Does anyone know who plays on this? I'm wondering if it's the 1956 Bohemia air check with Jackie McLean. If so, I need to go back and get it since (as I posted on the old board), I'm trying to collect every scrap of Jackie Mac. Has anyone heard this? How bad is the sound quality? Thanks in advance, Bertrand.

Looking at the Walmart photo again, I am sure it is Lee Morgan with the headband. Why? Look at the ears. There's a reason Lee was nicknamed Howdy Doody! Bertrand.
-
Freddie really was paranoid about Lee cutting him! Vincent, I remember now wondering the same thing about the headband around Lee's head, as to whether it could be a result of injuries sustained during the legendary beating. I seem to remember that the color photo in the book clearly shows that it is Lee standing there next to Wayne with the headband, or did I see a bigger version of this photo elsewhere? I will check my book tonight. If it is Lee and it is a bandage, perhaps he was laready injured in 1964, which would be consistent with Cali's recollections. I wouldn't put too much faith in Freddie's recollections - remember that he also thinks he joined the Messengers after the Sidewinder was a hit. We know of course that that was around the time he left. In fact, Lee rejoined just after Sidewinder was recorded, probably when he was still having financial trouble. Bertrand. P.S. Vincent, I sent you a package last Wednesday. You should be getting it shortly.

Even on the records, Lou often takes the last solo. Bertrand.

Cali, This is exactly the kind of first-hand info I was looking for! Since you remember hearing about the beating around 1964, and since I know that Lee had some stretches of inactivity (i.e. no recordings) in the later sixties, I'm starting to wonder if there were not several such incidents, and if the earlier one messed up his chops permanently. However, at least to my ears, his chops are fine on such later recordings as Sonic Boom, so I'm not sure how permanent the damage was. It was always my understanding that the famous anecdote about the radio tribute around 1962 was more the result of Lee's being off the NY scene than any erroneous reports of his actual demise. The dee jay had just made an assumption. Bertrand.

Does anyone actually really know when the incident occurred in which Lee Morgan was mugged and had his teeth knocked out? It was first alluded to by Duke Pearson (although listed as a swimming accident) in the liner notes to BN's shameless Memorial album that came out minutes after Lee was killed. Recently, it was stated on this board that the incident occurred shortly before the recording date for The Stroker, and that it explained Lee's weak chops on that record. The incident was also used to explain his chops on the Lighthouse date. Now, it is claimed that it occurred before Night Of The Cookers, explaining some weak chops there. The incident in question, by the way, may have occurred outside Slugs', where Lee was later killed. Burton Greene told me a few years back that it was a rough place, and that he almost got stabbed there himself. A more interesting question seems to pop up - why is it that Lee appears to have chops problems on certain recordings, and it seems to be apparent on different recordings for different listeners? Could we be holding him to a higher standard that other trumpeters (KD and Miles leap to mind)? Or could his chops have gone up and down according to his involvement with drugs? Are there any of his colleagues out there who know any more about this mugging? As a general rule (and this was pointed out to me by the Rutgers student who did his thesis on Lee), much more is known about Lee's early years than his life during the sixties. In fact, come to think of it, what do we know about these musicians' lives during the second half of the sixties? Jackie Mac actually owned a candy store near Slugs', which is not something I would immediately associate with him. Another student at Rutgers was on the old board, and was working on a thesis on Mobley. I wonder how much he found out about him in that period. There are very few known interviews (I know of only two). Bertrand.

Joe, Did you go to the Monterey concert? Which of these arrangements did they do? I was at Lincoln Center in 1998. They did 'Orbits' and 'Angola', but the arrangements were quite different. I did notice the peak distortion, at least on the copy I burned of my original CD to listen to in the car. I didn't notice it on my original, though. Bertrand.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIM ALFREDSON!

Happy Birthday, Jim. P.S. Soul Stream, Miles Davis' birthday is 5/26 - another self-propagating Leonard Feather gaffe. Bertrand. -
Are these available in stores in Paris, France? How many euros? Thanks, Bertrand.

Okay, you got me, whoever you are...

What was the subject line? Bertrand. -
I was able to snag one of the last copies before musicboy used his industry clout to have them all pulled from circulation. I've gotten through about half of it and am enjoying it immensely. The recorded sound is excellent as well - I love the way the guitar and the b-3 blend together. Great job, guys! Bertrand.

If Aric were here, he'd vote for Dream Weaver I'm I the only one who remembers that amazing post? Bertrand.

I hate to sound picky, but Miles Davis did record for Blue Note, both as a leader and a sideman. Bertrand.
