  1. Someone with a connection to Blue Note should find out what they have in place to avoid this.
  2. Could it have been another sign of ill health?
  3. The photo on the Resonance cover shows a huge bump on his forehead. What could that be?
  4. The lost 1963 sessions came from a copy that Coltrane took home. The copy was in Naima's possession, along with outtakes from the Johnny Hartman sessions etc. But there are also unissued sessions from 1967. Those may have been lost in the fire. But was Coltrane still taking tapes home at that point? Those would not have been in Naima's possession, of course. Alice would have had them. Was she as meticulous at keeping material as Naima was? I asked this question on Facebook and tagged Ravi, but nothing so far. He does not pop up a whole lot. Between this and the Atlantic fire, a lot of priceless items may have been lost. BUT there may be second generation copies of some of the material floating around. The existence of these for at least two of the Atlantic sessions has been discussed on this board, and at least one is about to come out. It behooves the Jazz community to put their thinking caps on and try to figure out what could still be salvaged. Some ideas to start: 1. How did those Atlantic tapes surface and could the same source(s) be in possession of other tapes? I have heard the argument 'they would have surfaced by now' but that is nonsense. Things surface every day, e.g. the Larry Young Paris tapes. I knew years before Feldman that tapes existed, but I never knew if they would ever surface. There are 7 billion people on earth, anyone of them could find a tape, in theory. 2. Was Coltrane the only one who took tapes home from the RVG studios? Did any other studios let artists take tapes home? Were ALL these tapes lost when the artists got divorced or died? Maybe some widows have tapes at home they never thought of telling anyone about. Take the Mingus Detroit sessions. Roy Brooks had them and his widow kept them. Yes, families are often clueless, but not always. 3. And then there can be some flukey situations. For example, very few people seem to be aware that Rutgers has copies of some Blue Note tapes. Despite my best efforts, I could never find out what they have. All I wanted to do was make an inventory. Are they copies of what is in the Capitol vaults, or tapes that exist nowhere else? Just some thoughts. Bertrand.
  5. Realgone put out the twofer, right? We could start with them. If they find it and it is releasable and Denardo says yes, and it is long enough, tack on the single and you have a great CD. Maybe there is more in the vaults. Is Crisis the full concert? Jazzdisco.org does not show more songs. But what is the Stating The Case from early 1970s? Live or studio? Someone put it out. Has anyone heard it?
  6. The issue was whether that was investigated at the time of the release. They also left off the Man on the Moon single... That's why I said 'could have been'. They were on a twofer CD 2-3 years ago. The audience can be heard on Ornette at 12.
  7. So this Sun Suite could have been on the Ornette at 12/Crisis CD? That sucks.
  8. Dee Dee Bridgewater's acceptance speech was a travesty. She complained that the $25K was not enough to pay for making her next CD...
  9. I nominated Joe Chambers 5 years ago, they keep them in the pool 5 years. I would have to renominate him. Should I bother? I have a feeling it is all political, and he does not 'play the game'.
  10. Does Grant Green get any solo space on the Dodo record? Any thoughts on Natural Illusions?
  11. Jackie Mac pulled a knife on Mingus and even nicked him, per Priestly.
  12. 1. So the problem with the Hendrix tunes is Larry Lee singing? 2. I thought the Grateful Dead hated their Woodstock set and did not want it released?

    Kenny Burrell

A statement that he left UCLA two years ago was on Facebook, but it does not seem to be true. All of this is very odd.
  14. The two that I don't have that I would consider as a Hutcherson and Grant Green completist are Natural Illusions and the Dodo Greene. The former has a really bad reputation. Not sure about the Dodo. Comments?
  15. I hope it is the one I am thinking...
  16. Just looked on the FAQ page, it is a big discount. $6 for the first book, $1.25 for each additional book.
  17. I was going to get it too, but are you sure there is really any savings by combining? Is the shipping charge not a flat fee per unit?
  18. Where was this, and where is the tape?
  19. So glad to see what kind of wonderful music can slip out from time to time from the project I worked on for years at the Library of Congress! Paul came to present a concert of Tadd's music at the Smithsonian two years ago for the Centennial as part of the Take 5 series I help organize. So glad my good friend Danielle Wertz was part of that concert when she was still in DC, she is one of my all-time favorite vocalists. She moved to the West Coast, resulting in her being available to be on this CD as well. Can't wait to hear it! Bertrand.
  20. Isn't it 'Introducing KB' rather than 'Freedom'?
  21. I think the interest in the Universe project has died. That ship has sailed. I tried.
  22. Update #1: There is a kickstarter out there for the Roney CD and a documentary about the whole project. Update #2: I am wiser now, and have spent a lot of time looking into the Left Bank Jazz Society. I very much doubt the last Coltrane concert was recorded, but the fact that a tape has yet to surface is not proof. Proof would be a video of Coltrane frisking every single audience member for a secret recording. That has yet to surface. Some accounts claim a recording was attempted, but the machine broke...
  23. Ah, so there is no one-CD vs. Two-CD option. It is just the L.P. that is shorter.
