  1. I agree with Dan, It sounds like he may be talking about live stuff. He does not find these things by himself, BTW.
  2. Sandino Latino came from the publisher.
  3. So Sunenblick's son put this out? What do the credits say? Website is gone.
  4. Excellent CD, thanks to Rooster for the recommendation. Whenever I hear about unknown compositions, I always feel compelled to dig further, especially since I have seen these unknown pieces in the Roach Collection at the Library of Congress. So the CD with Roach has 7 Hasaan Ibn Ali compositions: Three-four Vs. Six-eight Four-four Ways Off my Back Jack Hope so Elmo Almost Like Me Din-Ka Street Pay not Play not To Inscribe The first six pieces are on the Marsella CD, but not 'To Inscribe'. In addition to a Marsella original, there is another Hasaan piece, 'Per Aspera Ad Astra'. It does not sound like 'To Inscribe' under another title. So where does this piece come from? Here is the finding aid for the Roach Collection: http://findingaids.loc.gov/db/search/xq/searchMfer02.xq?_id=loc.music.eadmus.mu016007&_faSection=overview&_faSubsection=did&_dmdid=d581e6&_q=&_type=610$a&_displayTerm The Hasaan material includes: 1) A unique solo piano recording by the elusive Philadelphia pianist Hasaan Ibn Ali. Is this the rehearsal for the record with Roach as suggested by the liner notes to the Marsella CD? In this case, it would be the same tunes. 2) The collection also features several holograph manuscripts of Hasaan Ibn Ali. Here are the details: 1. Department (or) Apartment By Hasaan Ibn Ali Holograph manuscript parts 2. Dinka Street By Hasaan Ibn Ali 3. El Hasaan By Hasaan Ibn Ali Holograph manuscript double bass part (chords only) Double bass part (chords only) for "Never too late fate" on verso 4. Key to appreciation By Hasaan Ibn Ali Holograph manuscript sketches 5. Max's factor By Hasaan Ibn Ali Holograph manuscript parts (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, double bass) 6. Never too late fate By Hasaan Ibn Ali Holograph manuscript lead sheet, parts (saxophone, double bass) Double bass part (chords only) for "El Hasaan" on verso of double bass part 7. Three four vs. six eight four four ways By Hasaan Ibn Ali; arranged by Odean Pope Violin 2 part Two of these are on the Roach record, the other five are not. None of the five are 'Per Aspera Ad Astra'. So where did 'Per Aspera Ad Astra' come from? Mike Fitzgerald has this for the Lost Atlantic session with Odean Pope: https://jazzdiscography.com/Leaders/AliHasaanIbn-ldr.php So now we get 8 more titles (if you count Metaphysics), one of which El Hasaan is in the Roach collection. And another is 'Per Aspera Ad Astra'. So how did the Marsella trio get a hold of 'Per Aspera Ad Astra' so they could record it. I can see only three options: 1. They had access to the lost session, it seems someone does, most likely Odean Pope. 2. It is on that rehearsal tape at LC, not likely. 3. It is an a stash of unknown pieces that no one knew about but that suddenly appeared recently when a family member appeared out of the blue. I have heard no mention of this happening with Hasaan, but it has happened before. To be continued... Bertrand.
  5. 1/2/19-1/5/19. Heading up to NYC on Wednesday morning, who else is going?

  7. Hope someone can help me see it later. I don't have a TV. Will it be on youtube?
  8. I second that thought! Get well soon, Wayne!
  9. You will find a few snobs who complain about reissues of sessions that already existed on CD and are now out of print. Those people seem to forget that old people die and new people are born. Or perhaps they believe they are the center of the Universe. I went through the same frustrations when I started collecting Blue Notes around your age. I would hear 'Oh, I have that on vinyl' a lot. Like I gave a fuck. There were a couple of golden ages of Blue Note reissues, but now I think Japan is your best bet. They can be found for not that much more. Two huge advantages to your situation: 1. Think of all the titles you still have to discover! You would not want to get the whole catalog in one fell swoop, right? 2. A lot of the new issues will have bonus tracks, and us older folks will be buying CDs again for those extra cuts. For you, it will be the first time. My two cents.
  10. I saw the film in DC around 1992. A lot of the music in the film was from Bitches Brew. Quincy Troupe was supposed to be there, but it was Stanley Crouch instead, who was a fucking asshole. Ruined the day for me.
  11. Any legal mean to obtain Zero Gravity #913?
  12. The last volume had an unissued track by the Wayne Shorter quartet. Did that track make it onto Emanon? If not, can it be purchased as a download somewhere? Can anyone provide any info on the track, e.g. title, date, venue? Thanks! Bertrand.
  13. And I just heard her last night at the Monk Competition and thought she was an abomination. Gigi Gryce was turning over in his grave.
  14. Wayne is a very nice guy. I worked on a Lee Morgan project with him early this year at Yale and it was a real pleasure. Jeremy Pelt was on the gig.
  15. Black Art is excellent!!!
  16. I had very limited dealings with Uptown, but the guy was nuts. I wonder if anyone will ever be able to acquire all the tapes he left behind, e.g. the rest of the Duke Pearson Left Bank material or the Grant Green/John Patton Left Bank. He has other goodies, but those were the ones he was able to get through a lead I gave him.
  17. His current band is good, but he is not really doing anything new these days. The best band he ever had was the one with his brother and thr rhythm section of Aruan Ortiz, Rahsaan Carter and Kush Abadey. It sounded like the Miles front line meets Weather Report. The gigs at Bohemian Caverns were incredible. I worked with him initially on that project with the unknown big band charts that Miles wrote for Wayne that I found at the Library of Congress. I did get to see the band at the Jazz Standard 5 years ago and it was amazing. The DC concert was cancelled alas, I am still pissed off at the venue. There was a lot of drama associated with that project and apparently he wants nothing to do with me anymore. Whatever. I am sorry I did not approach Jeremy Pelt about this, but I thought Roney knew Wayne better.
  18. I think I read an interview where Wayne claimed he was at Newport. I could be remembering wrong. Wayne did do a few gigs with Horace later in 1957, then Clifford took over. A little bit odd that Clifford came and went and came, but not impossible. Someone did listen to the tapes, I am sure Horace announced the band. If not, then we cannot be 100% sure it is Clifford. The same guy who processed the tapes claimed that Dewey Redman was announcing a tune called 'The Body', when in fact it was 'Imani'. Whatever.
  19. Yes, VOA recorded Horace on 7/6/57 and the Library of Congress has the tape. It claims it is Clifford Jordan. My guess is Horace announced the personnel. I have not gone there to listen to tapes in years. The recorded sound division was always nice to me. Music Division is another matter. I went two weeks ago, and this creaky old fart told me jazz was not art, or, more precisely, Julius Watkins is not an artist. Fuck you, asswipe.
  20. So Wayne may not have joined Horace until later in July 1957, which suggests someone else was at Newport. Mobley? Wayne definitely did a few gigs with Horace, but there are probably no recordings.
  21. Wayne was with Horace for a month or so, I think he joined the army which is why his tenure was brief. They only did about 3 gigs, including Newport. I will check the dates, he graduated NYU in '56 so maybe it was Newport '56, not '57. Add: Apparently, it was while he was in the Army. Looks like Silver's first Newport was 1957. So where is the recording?
  22. So is there confirmation that London is from 2016? There are no dates in the booklet...
  23. Does Don Cherry play a lot on this one, or is he just a sporadic guest? Thanks!
  24. Do you get the feeling they might repress this (at least the last CD) to add the missing piece, or shall I go ahead and open mine?
  25. Just got my copy but I hesitate to open it yet, because the last response almost suggests they might repress with the extra track. Kinda puzzling.
