  1. I noticed that CDBaby has this for $20. How can I know if it's a CD-R or a real CD? Also, I am missing Verona Rag and Strange Serenade. Is there a way to get these on a real CD and not a CD-R? Thanks, Bertrand.
  2. Tim Green.
  3. I am very sad to report that my friend Butch Warren passed away yesterday 10/5/13 around 6:45 PM at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland. As you know, Butch had recently been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Butch last performed on August 9th at a birthday celebration at Westminster Church. The last piece he ever performed in public was 'Barack Obama'. Farewell, Butch, I will miss your music, your stories and your deadpan sense of humor. It was great hanging out with you over the years. I asked Butch once what it was like playing with Archie Shepp and Bill Dixon. His reply (I paraphrase): 'the music is the same, the people just dance differently'. Bertrand.
  4. I wonder if Betty is still with us. Bertrand.
  5. What is 'My Valentine'? Bertrand.
  6. Pepper Adams is amazing on this record. Bertrand.
  7. A new one just hit my mailbox (will I ever stop buying CDs?): Belle And Sebastian - The Life Pursuit. Great song, BTW. Bertrand.
  8. I'm sorry you didn't care for the music, Hoppy. I will think about your comments some more in the next few days in light of my personal reaction to the music. There were a lot of people I talked to who did love it but you are certainly entitled to your opinion. I hope no one will feel the need to pull out the knives. I think he is playing less sax for his orchestral works as part of his master plan - I remember an interview where he said he was working on some orchestral music that he wouldn't even need to play on (edit - see post #34 above). He also candidly addressed the issue of his sax playing in the Tavis Smiley interview. For another angle of Wayne's work in this domain, you need to hear 'Universe', 'Twin Dragon' and 'Legend'. I hope more people can hear these works one day. Wallace and David worked hard to put this project together and really make it work - their efforts need to be disseminated. Bertrand.
  9. Also fits in the 'album covers with musicians who misplaced their turban' thread. Bertrand.
  10. Absolutely, Jim runs an A-class show all the way! Bertrand.
  11. Five examples to get started. In each of these examples, the artist did record the song elsewhere, as a leader or sideman. Sonny Rollins: What’s New Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention: Absolutely Free Grant Green: Grant’s First Stand Butch Warren: Butch’s Blues Buddy DeFranco: Sweet And Lovely Bertrand.
  12. This concert is part of the monthly Take 5 series for which I am a volunteer. We've put together some great programs so far: Lee Morgan, Dewey Redman, 'Cool Yule', Wayne Shorter (Vee-Jay years), Kenny Dorham, Grachan Moncur III, Pepper Adams (with 3 baritones), Bud Powell, Weather Report (Shorter's compositions), Shirley Horn, and just last week, Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement. I am really touched by the efforts of all the great DC musicians who worked very hard to put some great programs together: Donvonte McCoy, Brian Settles, Sarah Hughes, Brad Linde, Elijah Jamal Balbed, Mike 'Bags' Davis, Corey Wallace, Frank Basile (from NYC), Tim Whalen, Harold Summey, Andrea Wood, and Nasar Abadey. There are many more great concerts in store, if you are in DC. It's always on the third Thursday of the month. Bertrand.

    He's nuts. Bertrand.
  14. DC next week! Can't wait. Just spoke to Wayne tonight at the Monk competition where he received a Lifetime Achievement award. The winner was Melissa Aldana from Chile. Bertrand.
  15. The check is in the mail! Bertrand.
  16. I met Mr. Osteen and he has been doing a lot to keep the memory of the Left Bank going. I do wish the author of the article could have spoken to some of the members. Bertrand.
  17. I guess it was decided that the cat could be left out of the bag, He was diagnosed a few months ago. They did a tribute at Westminster Church on 8/9 (his birthday), and he played a few pieces. I visited him in the hospital and the nursing home a few times. His mind is still sharp, and the old humor is still there. Some friends of mine recorded him in Baltimore in January with Freddie Redd and Matt Wilson, along with Brad Linde, Brian Settles and Sarah Hughes on some of the tracks. I will keep you posted on when this will be available (Michael Formanek is also on the session on the tracks for which Butch sits out). Hanging with Butch over the years has been an honor and privilege. Let's think happy thoughts as he is still with us, handling his illness with great dignity and good spirits. Bertrand.
  18. Memo to self: stay away from the Hoffman forums. Bertrand.
  19. Why only Hipp volume 1??? Bertrand.
  20. I had a long talk with Bob Sunenblick today. It turns out he had a serious health scare a while back which is why he was out of touch. But he is recovered now so that's great news. Yes, he does have more releases in store so that is very good news. Concerning the sound quality, he found a sound engineer who really did an amazing job despite some oddities in the original tapes. A lot of these things can be corrected. My personal feeling is that, although the Left Bank shows were not recorded under optimal conditions, the quality of the final output is really dependent on the efforts of the engineer. My two cents is that the Jackie McLeans on Steeplechase are really poor, but the Dexter Gordons on Fantasy are quite good. The Dorns are in the middle. Bertrand.
  21. First I heard of this - I hope there's not too much overlap with the other live sets, if any. Recording dates would be nice; maybe they are listed somewhere else. Bertrand.
  22. An entire non-stop month of Zorn would still only cover about 3% of his discographical output. Bertrand.
  23. Tim Green is at Twins tonight in DC 8PM, with Allyn Johnson, James King and Nasar Abadey. Bertrand.
  24. I know nothing about TV, I never watch it. so that's why I didn't know what this was. I'm probably going to see Tim Green tonight anyway. Thanks for the link. Bertrand.
