Marcello, I clicked on the link, but I don't see where it says specifically that these were taken at Left Bank. Is this something you know from another source, or are you only speculating that some of these or all of these are from Left Bank? I was too young to attend the Left Bank shows in the 60s and 70s, and even in the 80s-90s I never went. I almost went to see Hubbard but he cancelled . I can forward this site to the people I know and also the older members of the DC Jazz scene. Bertrand.

Chewy, Mobley definitely appeared at the Left Bank a few times. I will post the dates I have later. But, as I said above, I don't know what Sunenblick was able to get a hold of. Some concerts were recorded, some weren't. Some tapes are AWOL, some are not. Bertrand.
-
What is your involvement? BTW, this one looks like a must-have! I tracked down the people who have the tapes for him. I never heard after from him on how he fared. I know he got a few things, including the Pearson, which was the initial quest of his hunt.
-
I don't need a free CD, I need him to give us a complete list of the tapes he was able to get. Bertrand.
-
Finally. I wonder in what way Sunenblick will acknowledge my involvement, if at all. Bertrand.

Pepper Adams/Donald Byrd "Out of This World"

The Fresh Sound CD has a problem, IIRC. I think the song 'Curro's' is repeated so instead of 12 minutes, it's the 6 minute track played over. I'll have to check. Bertrand. -
That sounds promising, but if anyone already bought this version, please confirm that it is not a needle drop. Bertrand.
-
Is the Curtis Counce from the actual tapes? I'm thinking of upgrading the Fresh Sound which didn't sound all that great. Bertrand.

I am happy that the Japanese are doing these Blue Note and Pacific Jazz reissues since the US has given up. Gigi Gryce's Reminiscing was a disappointing needle-drop, however. Bertrand.

Book with Jackie Mac on the cover?

It's a shame Ansell didn't try to interview anyone - I could have hooked him up with Freddie Redd and Butch Warren. Bertrand. -
Thanks! No first name is give for Olsen? Bertrand.

Digging up this thread - I'm trying to put composer credits on some of these tunes. For anyone who was the Frankfurt Special CD on Fresh Sound, who is listed as composer on the following: Simone I Yogi Diagram Variations Simone II Morning Fun I don't think either 'Simone' is the Frank Foster tune, and in fact I think these are two different tunes. Thanks, Bertrand.

What's even more disturbing is that every one of these LP covers is from JSngry's personal collection. Bertrand.

Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration.
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
So now we are looking at the possibility that there were two performances, or is Wayne just confusing UCLA with Monterey? I searched the Monterey recordings archive at Stanford but did not find anything. I will try to call them. Bertrand. -
Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration.

The thing I read was more specific - I thought the piece would contain snippets of well known tunes from the Miles repertoire like 'So What', but instead it is several Shorter compositions that had just been written and most of them not yet issued (certainly not 'Sweet Pea'). So it must have been some press release that I read since the pieces were not yet known at the time of the performance. I still think it was the March or April 1967 downbeat. Bertrand. -

Thanks! There actually be another article in an earlier issue (maybe 4/67), perhaps announcing the UCLA Festival. I distinctly remember a write-up which said that 'Legend' incorporates various themes from the Miles repertoire. That does not seem to be what the blurb above is talking about. Bertrand. -

Thank you so much! I believe Siders is with Jazz Times, so could be reachable. Interesting line-up but not a whole lot of people who are still living, off the top of my head. Bertrand. -
Wayne Shorter's 80th Birthday Celebration.

Thanks for finding this! I guess at some point I would like a Xerox copy if possible. 1) It really does not look like a pre-written review. It sure seems to me that the reviewer actually heard the piece. The only way I would be willing to believe that this made up is if the description did not match the piece, i.e. the piece is not 'built on descending figures with a bass lead, in a minor mode', and there is no middle section in 3/4. A bit of a stretch, IMHO. 2) Who wrote the review? Anyone we know? 3) So we know Grady Tate was on drums - there's one person still alive who might remember something. Are any other musicians mentioned? 4) It is not clear that Gary McFarland is conducting and in fact it seems that he is not. If not Gary, then who? 5) It's not even clear that it was Miles playing this piece! Rooster, does the article state that it was Miles performing? This piece involves a trumpet soloist in any case, so I would assume it was Miles. So who is going to call Grady Tate? I wonder if he is on Facebook... Bertrand. -

There's a 20-minute feature on youtube by Brian Pace with some clips of the orchestra interspersed with an interview with Roney. It doesn't really give a good feel of how good the music is, and I think the first piece is actually the Irving piece, although I did hear some of 'Legend' later on. Bertrand. -

Thanks! I can use this to get someone in DC interested in this project. The comment about putting more recent orchestral works into fuller context really hits the nail on the head - that's exactly how I felt walking out of the room. I'm sure glad I dug up 'Universe' and 'Twin Dragon' at the Library of Congress 20+ years ago. 1) Maybe they played 'Aura' on the night Adler was there, but on Sunday the set closer for both sets was a Robert Irving III piece which fit in very well with the rest. 2) Interesting comment about hearing 'Sanctuary' within 'Universe'. A friend of mine also thought he heard it, but what I was hearing was 'Condition Red'. I suspect there is a subtle relationship between the two. I hope everyone can hear this music live and on record real soon. Bertrand. -
