Wolfgang has a new release of Joe Henderson in SF in '75 I believe. 30+ minute version of 'Afro-centric'. I know what I'm downloading later after I walked the dog. Bertrand.

I always wondered: is that Grachan or Wayne whistling on Grachan's record? I thought it was the tune 'Nomadic' rather than 'Gnostic', but maybe it's both. Would this be the first instance on Wayne whistling on record? A good source tells me he also whistles on the 10/31/70 unissued Blue Note session. I don't know of any other instances before that, other than mayne Grachan's record. Bertrand.

Valerie, I agree with everything you said. You are so lucky to have caught the Disney Hall show! Other than the new piece, 'Gaia', which Esperanza sings on, what other pieces was she involved in? Did she play bass on any of the music? I was wondering if there were going to be any pieces with two basses. Jim, Fascinating theory about Grachan. A few years ago, I shared a cab with Grachan and Joe Chambers (this does not happen every day!). Grachan said that Wayne told him that after 'Fransenstein' came out, it totally 'freed' Wayne up - the implication as I understood it was that Wayne found new inspiration for his own writing in the freedom of Grachan's writing - I assume he heard other compositions as well. I never thought of Facebook for Joesf! I found someone with the same name as the actress who did the singing, Carol Cortne, but she never answered so it must not be her. Josef must be old by now. I have information that he was also up to other things in the 50s which would be of great interest to us if I can confirm them. I will try to friend him. 'Ode to David Begelman' must be one of the three Freddie Redd tunes. Martin Banks and Teddy Edwards must be on those - I am sure they are not playing with Ornette. Bertrand.

John Litweiler's Ornette bio mentions a film called The Box Office made in 1981 and released in 1982 and produced by Josef Bogdanovich (not sure who that is and if he is related to film director Peter), which apparently has a score written by Ornette Coleman for Prime Time+40-piece Orchestra+singer (recorded in March 1981). In addition, there are three songs written by pianisrt Freddie Redd and sung by one of the actresses in the film (who presumbably wrote the lyrics). Freddie has confirmed the existence of this film and his involvement, but does not remember the three songs. Does anyone know anything more about this? My interest is two-fold. 1) It is a rare Ornette recording, which obviously took some time and money to put together. 2) There may be three unknown Freddie Redd tunes, which could be revived and added to his current repertoire. Is this film available somewhere? IMDB has few details, and it's certainly not on DVD. It was apparently either never released or only briefly. REALLY curious about this one! Bertrand.

Got it for $40 with a Barnes And Noble Coupon. A very good first impression. I am glad that he discusses the copyright deposits including the unrecorded tunes. I feel better knowing that the 20 years I spent on this project were not in vain. Bertrand.

Wasn't there a folio of tunes from the Weather Report repertoire that was published and that one could buy? I remember seeing this listed somewhere. Hal Leonard shows one with a balloon on the cover that has 14 compositions and seems to be in print, but I remember seeing one that had a photo of the band on the cover. Maybe it's the same book with a different cover. Any leads will be deeply appreciated. Bertrand.

Just to whet everyone's appetite: Herbie Nichols performed at some Church in NYC as part of a concert series. Ornette did a couple of concerts in this series as well. This may have been recorded! I'm trying to find out more. I just found out about this a week ago. Bertrand.

Actually, my favorite of the three is 'Young Blues'. 'Flickers' (mislabeled 'Minor Dream') and 'Nica's Dream' are stand-outs. The other two are still very good. The recording sound on 'Groove Street' is kind of weird. Bertrand.

How can you tell which are going to be slapdash and which are going to be well-thought out and carefully planned? That 'Free Jazz' thing might work or it might not, but there's nothing specifically indicating to me that it cannot work out. There is no one listed in the personnel who is not a talented, hard-working artist who has paid his dues. Lovano is a bit of an outsider in this, but Dewey Redman is a major influnce, so really he does fit in in the concept. I'm almost sorry now I did not plan to go see this. Ben Allison is one of my favorite musicians working these days from the 'younger' generation. Bertrand.

Equating a recreation of 'Free Jazz' with a tourist attraction along the lines of 'Mamma Mia' is somewhat of an exaggeration, IMHO. Bertrand.
