  1. Couldn't agree more.
  2. My opinion echoes what Soul Stream said, as an earlier post of mine made clear that I didn't care for this album. Now it's one of my favorites, right up there with Goin' West which has the same lineup.
  3. What FFA said. AFAIC, this album contains the definitive version of "Autumn Leaves."
  4. Damn, now this thread is making me thirsty. Time for a beer!

Maybe it was just filler. Maybe it was just the producer's idea. Not sure either way. Definitely a nice tip of the hat to the influence and artistry of Ahmad Jamal. ...or maybe it was a tip of the hat to the influence and artistry of Red Garland, I don't really care what anybody says, Red Garland was a damn fine pianist. No argument from me. Me either.
  6. i got in a fight with a young woman...a short dumpy mama (not white) in the bad sense at a party last weekend when she asked me what i was drinking and i said "a 40" and she said "a 40 of what?" and i said "olde english" and she said "yeah, white people like to drink that" and i was like "no they don't" and she was like "yes they do" and i was like "well i disagree and i am not white, anyway" and she said "you're not? what are you?" and i said "jewish" and she said "then you're white" and then i said "i disagree with everything you are saying" and she said "i'm going to blog about this" and i was about to flip out but my friend who's birthday it was asked me to keep calm so i did, though i did seethe silently for the rest of the night. white people do not like 40s and the only reason i bought olde english was that it was the only brand of malt liquor the nearest bodega offered. but any party (mostly white, generally) i go to, a 40 will get stupid comments like "oh i haven't seen that since college" like it is crazy i would prefer the sweeter and MUCH more economical 40 or two of malt liquor to some sort of cheesy and bitter six pack of "lager" or "ale" when purchasing by booze of choice for the night. What's the blogsite? Since we are a crazed swarm of angry enthusiasts, we might find a new home. And, off we could go like a plague of locusts descending on the unsuspecting site. We Blue Note fanatics could swamp the smaller site unaccustomed to the large mass and crash their modest server. Since the Blue Note mob brought down every other jazz site it landed on due to their numbers and massive usage, we might also bring the ire up of the blogosphere; and I really don't give a rat's ass if these other communities start complaining about the rude Blue Noters that invade them like a conquering horde.

Favorite track has to be "Sid's Ahead" where Miles plays piano and trumpet.
  8. It'd be nice if the Overture to Dawn series came out as either a 2-CD Conn or a 3-CD Mosaic Select. (I'm guessing that five 10" records would fit on two CDs, much like the Gil Melle Conn that came out years back)

I wish I was older where I could've been there buying these records as they came out. I can totally get into that feeling of holding the record in your hands and smelling the dust jacket...ahhhhhh. Right there with ya, brother!
  10. Y'know, on Saturday, I checked my account and it said that everything had shipped. Just now, after reading the above post, my account now says that the Ella box is "Temp Out of Stock" as well. How it can go from being "shipped" to "temp out of stock" baffles me. Especially since my account balance includes the price of the Ella box!
  11. I can't say I disagree, but then I really love the Teddy Wilson Mosaic. I guess you would have to be one of those for whom the tried-n-true piano-trio format never gets old. FWIW, I have a 2-LP compilation of Garner called Play it Again, Erroll that is just about as close to perfection as it gets, IHMO. Fits nicely onto one CD, too. Were it stretched out to Mosaic length, I'd probably enjoy that as well.
  12. Up to that last line, I agree completely. We did feel betrayed. But IIRC, it wasn't Norah who we blamed: it was Blue Note for destroying our online home-away-from-home; it was the Norah Jones crazies who came in and started a whole bunch of Norah-related threads and then got pissy (by way of spam threads) when no one wanted to play with them. It's like the uninvited guests who come in, clean out your fridge, piss on your walls, and then wonder why you won't be more gracious to them. Yes, we ran off Norah, and for that a mirror should be held up to our collective scuzzy faces. But I also believe we can be forgiven for feeling like we'd not only been ambushed but also kicked out of our own home. Quite honestly, I don't know how you can read the above remarks and, as a member of the old BNBB, not feel unnecessarily slammed. A "swarm of angry enthusiasts?" "A plague of locusts?" "Fanatics?" Remember, we were and are a community, and a rather large one at that, who literally had the rug yanked out from under them. What would you expect us to do? Disappear? Some of the strongest friendships I have are right here on this board. I'm sure your psychiatrist friend would have a field day with that, but that's the way it is. So yeah, the bulk of us feel a tad insulted. Sue us.
  13. Reading through the thread, I see that this is the BN track, and I have committed a grave sin against Blue Note orthodoxy! No sweat. Just say five "Hail Mobley's" and five "Our Blakey's" and you'll be absolved.
  14. I think you'll get them. It's been taking BMG a bit longer than normal lately to get orders out, in my experience. Maybe due to the volume, with all the good sales that are going on. Sometimes they send things to you and they don't post them as being shipped, too. Also, you can't go by the shipping date on the order history page, once it appears. Often, that page will show the shipping date as the date the order was placed, and then several days later you'll receive a shipping notice from them with a later (and presumably the actual) shipping date. True that. I can't help but wonder if BMG is offering these wild sales as a way of dumping inventory in preparation for an impending shut-down. I hope not.
  15. Indeed. You won't find a more close-knit "band of brothers," IMHO. And while it is true that we are a predominantly male bunch, all you have to do is ask Rachel, Patricia, Maren, and the couple of other women on this board who's names escape me: we treat our chicks with a lotta class. (Note to the humor-impaired: the above was a joke. Hell, if it wasn't for the aforementioned ladies, I daresay there wouldn't be any class in this place. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing , but they do add some grace and beauty to this place that no male could ever bring. That, and they're hot, too! )
  16. Me too!
  17. And a "franchise tax" that businesses pay, and then pass the expense through the cost of their products. So, though it may not be a "state income tax" in name, it does exist here. Having said that, it's still lower than any other state in the union and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Honestly, I once had dreams of living in Chicago until I started visiting there regularly in my late teens/early 20s, when I had my own money to spend. I still can't grasp how people afford to live up there. I definitely felt like the country mouse in the city. And this was just in Mount Prospect! well, Al, if it makes you feel any better, we're strongly considering moving to Austin because everything is so expensive up here. For the price of our condo, we could get a house down there, have lots of live music and never have to deal with shoveling snow ever again. It's starting to seem like a really good idea. Yeah, you'd definitely like Austin. Just beware: the summers down here are BRUTAL. But hey, my dad's from Chicago and he wouldn't trade the hot summers for the Chicago winters at ALL.

  19. YouTube clips of the Costello segment apparently have applause overdubbed at the end of the song. I've never seen the undoctored non-applause segment. Is it even available? I remember seeing Nirvana on SNL and thought that was too cool. Yeah, it'd all been done before, but actually seeing someone do it live--especially since a lot of music in 1991 sucked hard--was refreshing.
  20. What he said, brother!
  21. Well gang, another birthday's come and gone and I want to thank everyone for all the good wishes and for making this birthday that much more special. Cheers!!! (Sorry, I would've posted this sooner, but I'm still trying to find my other eyeball, seeing as how they both jumped outta their sockets a couple posts back! )
  22. These truly are "The Best of Times!"
  23. Wow, that is sad! Leaving behind a family like that breaks my heart. Never heard of his jazz band or records. Anyone else hear them and have opinions? RIP regardless.
  24. Well, here in Texas it's still March 2 so it's still my birthday. So, more thanks to all who've posted so far! Dan, I've been a Ranger fan all my life. The ONLY thing that will surprise me anymore is a World Series ring. Or maybe another 30-run game. Rachel, shake it baby!
  25. Well then, y'all don't wanna know what I was wearing (or not wearing) when taking the test.
