Anyone can start a thread about a particular album. This as opposed to the ongoing "What Are You Listening To" thread. Just start a thread about an album you feel like talking about. For future search sake, just list the artist and the album title in the thread. Just a thought, since the "Album of the Month" idea didn't take off.

By all means, RUN do not walk back there and get THE KID AND THE BRUTE. You will regret it if you miss it. Some outstanding Jacquet combo swing there, with the addition of Ben Webster on a couple of standout tracks.

Japanese mini lp cds Blue Note 24 bit reissues
Big Al replied to steveswr's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm also very soured on Ebay this morning, as paypal just ripped me off for $43 plus all their listing and selling fees by issuing a bogus refund to an unethical buyer. Had no real response from them to the evidence I submitted, just auto responses from a machine and canned responses from the paypal customer service androids. So I'm very sympathetic to your plight. Anyone doing Ebay fulltime has my unreserved sympathy. Wow. That's unfortunate, but good to know. I was about to put a bunch of (cheap) LPs up on eBay. Think I'll just take 'em to Forever Young instead. -

Yes, please post a list. You can PM the list to me as well, if you wish. I'd love to see what you have! -
Sonny Stitt & The Top Brass (Atlantic 1395, mono)

Oh, I don't know: I was in there New Year's Day and picked up Tony Bennett's CLOUD 7 on the original red-label Columbia for $6. It sounds beautiful. Like Jim said, it's very hit-or-miss with HPB. Sometimes it's a goldmine, other times it's a chore raking thru all the Herb Alpert/Chuck Magione/David Sanborn/Spyro Gyra/Boots Randolph/Al Hirt records to find out there's nothing there. Just depends on what day you go, I guess.

Yeah, what kh1958 & JSngry said, word for word. Gas prices keep me from going to CD Source & the big HPB as much as I used to. Forever Young has a more-than-decent used CD selection, considering their focus is more on vinyl than anything else.

I used to have a man card, but it was permanently revoked when I admitted to liking Tori Amos. Have I mentioned how much I enjoy ABBA? Mamma Mia, baby!
-
Yes, that is correct; forgot about that one!

IIRC, the only albums from the box available as VMEs are Getz/Gilberto and Jazz Samba. The rest are either old masterings about as old as those on the box, or OOP altogether. The box is definitely the best way to go, if you can find it.

I will always leave the radio on when Phil Collins "Against All Odds" plays, and I am unashamed to admit to occasionally getting choked up remembering the girl for whom I was head-over-heels-in-love at the time the song came out. Man card? What man card? I lost that years ago, if I ever had one.

concerts we are ashamed to admit we attended

You're saying the concert would've been great if you'd gotten laid? Well....... yeah...... -
AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
Heath's entire Riverside output is worth hearing. Except for one album, all of his albums for the label were in a group no smaller than a sextet. THE THUMPER is similar to the two albums at hand, with the difference being a trombone being in place of the French horn. Then there's REALLY BIG which lives up to its title, both literally and figuratively. All of these albums showcase Heath's expert arranging skills. The lone exception to these is ON THE TRAIL, a quintet album with Kenny Burrell as the other lead instrument. This one's the loosest of the bunch, but no less lovely. Heath blows his ass off all over this album. I was fortunate enough to find a vinyl copy of this cheap recently, green-label original I think. The sound is wonderful. -
Sonny Rollins and Big Brass (VME) As well as the first two KISSOLOGY DVD sets and the KISS Alive box. Sick, I know....

concerts we are ashamed to admit we attended
Big Al replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Wow! I did that at Pink Floyd in '88, but didn't pass out. I wish I had, though, given how boring the concert was (in retrospect). Of course, I didn't get laid that night either. But it was a bunch of us guys in full "DUUUUUUUUUUDE" mode. None of us'd gotten laid if we were the last dudes on earth. -

I saw John Waite in summer of '85. I was 15, working at Six Flags Over Texas, and he played a concert there. Fortunately, I was with two rather attactive female co-workers. UNfortunately, neither one of them wanted to have sex with me (a precursor to the rest of my high-school life). So, yes, that concert sucked. -
AOTW - Monk with Trane - Complete 1957 Riversides
Big Al replied to GA Russell's topic in Album Of The Week
I did, and I wholeheartedly agree!!! I can't believe I waited forever to pick this one up. This album just flows so seamlessly from one track to the next, sounding very much (and simultaneously) as a Monk album as well as an Ellington album. Thanks for tipping me to this, guys! -
With the recent Concord sale, it seems a lot of us picked up these two titles. These titles were chosen because they feature the same lineup on both albums and were recorded at roughly the same time. I chose these albums because I've lately become a huge fan of Jimmy Heath's arranging skills. These two stand out because both albums are in a sextet format, but the three-horn lineup contains the unusual choice of a french horn, and the sound of that horn, coupled with Heath's magical arranging, makes the ensemble sound a lot bigger than it is. In fact, letting the french horn take the lead during the opening head of "Gemini" is a master stroke, IMO. The voicings of all three horns are gorgeous throughout both albums. Freddie Hubbard is as outstanding an accompanist as he is a soloist, never getting in the way, but sounding forceful and confident all the same. And then there's Heath's playing which also falls in the same vein; he's the leader, but he cedes the spotlight to his other bandmates so well that this could easily have been credited to a band instead of just one person. Hopefully, the discussion of these two albums (and Heath in general) will last a month. So get to it, y'all!

Ah, I'm not worried. The Cows are so unfocused right now, one more distraction isn't going to make much of a difference.

There was a quote in the paper this weekend where one of the Dolphins from the '72 team said, to the effect, "Yeah, if the Pats win, we'll let them share the glory with us." [emphasis mine] Yet another reason I hope the Pats go all the way. Anyone else want to take the bet that the Cows lose in the first round again? Anyone who says yesterday's game was meaningless is deluding themselves. You can still start your backups and come to PLAY. NOBODY wearing a blue star on their helmet showed up to play yesterday. Wouldn't be so bad, but this is a disturbing trend; not just for this season, but for many previous seasons where the Cows begin the annual December swoon. This year is no different, and I see no reason to believe that the Cows will go any further than the first round. ESPECIALLY if they have to face the Skins again. Gad, it's like re-living the Mavs playoffs this year.

Wow! What a game! 16-0! How cool is that? Well, really, it's only as cool as the next game, the next game, and so on. At this point, anything less than a Super Bowl trophy will mark this season as a failure. You're right, Conn: the pressure on the Pats now is tremendous. But like Jim said, DAMN they are good indeed! If any team can take it all the way, it should be the Patriots!

This thread made me wonder if OP was the Wynton Marsalis of his time: 1) Technically gifted, with a debatable talent as to the placement of those gifts 2) Made a whole BUNCH of albums 3) Very popular (within a jazz context anyway) 4) Had quite a few unpopular opinions (Monk, f'rinstance) 5) Had quite a few detractors Just a thought.
