"After the Vanguard: the Return of Bill Evans"
Big Al replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Oh, I can't wait for this show to hit the archive. Moon Beams and How My Heart Sings are my all-time favorite Evans albums; I like them more than the VV albums! I'm glad you chose "Very Early," David; that song is very heartbreaking. -
Talk about two teams with identical records but going in completely opposite directions. The Packers are red hot. The Cowboys annual December swoon is in full gear (I know they won the previous two games prior to today, but they were difficult wins and they were hardly playing at their best in those games). Today was the proverbial opening of the floodgates. Only now it seems like the problem is on the OFFENSIVE side. Roy Williams should be suspended for the rest of the season for that horse-collar penatly. Hey shitferbrains: THAT RULE WAS PUT ON THE BOOKS BECAUSE OF YOU, YA DUMBFUCK! 11-2, bigdealsowhat. You heard it here first, and you actually heard it last week: the Cowboys playoff futility continues this year with yet another first-round exit.

Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly.

Y'all better quit tellin' us what you bought. I don't wanna have to place a second order. Hell, I haven't even gotten the shrink-wrap off some of the CDs from the last order! :yikes:

I am staring and staring and staring at Bright Moments's beautiful lady image. It's much easier on the eyes than Matthew's image. ***************** Happadab'lldooya, JSngry! I'll spin some Bird in your honor today and pretend to get it!

I often wished that instead of doing a Rod McKuen album that he'd done a Leonard Cohen album. Imagine Frank doing "Story of Isaac." Also, I wish Frank had done a version of "If You Go Away" by Jacques Brel... I think a Frank Sings Leonard Cohen album would have been sensational! Too bad we can't raise the dead... Sure they can. Tupac, Notorious BIG... hell, even Nat King Cole!!! ************* If Sinatra had only done SONGS FOR YOUNG LOVERS/SWING EASY, SONGS FOR SWINGING LOVERS, and ONLY THE LONELY, that would be enough to solidify him as a legend in my book. Also dig his work with the Dorsey Orchestra. But the real jewel in the rough is his SINATRA/JOBIM album. Happy birthday, Chairman! Hopefully, he and Phil Hartman are leading another round of "The Sinatra Group" up there!

Board Members as TV Characters?

I watched one episode of The Office. I can't watch it anymore. I am Michael Scott. And that's not a good thing, BTW. -

Now if that piece of glass had contained traces of lead, THEN you might've gotten the free case of yogurt.

What an album! Album of the year, AFAIC. Very wistful and pastoral; it's like a Sonic Youth album without the amplifiers and distortion. Plus, Moore has a very melodic voice, IMHO. If you're a Sonic Youth fan, this is a nice addition to the canon. (Note to clem: yes, I know you think that there is better examples of this stuff out there, that Thurston ain't nearly the writer he allegedly used to be, etc etc etc. Big deal. I like this, it's music to my ears, and that's good enough for me.) There.

You're right!!!!!! Thanks! I stopped paying attention once I found out the board was continuing. WOO HOO!!!!! Party in the thread!!! -
Isn't that from 'Byrd In Hand' ghost? Yes. OFF TO THE RACES is just as good as BYRD IN HAND, FWIW IMHO.

This is a nice album, but it's not your typical romp-n-stomp classic-lineup swinger that the Cook-Mitchell albums are. It's a lot more intricate, but it still swings! It definitely lives up to its title.

AOTW - Monk with Trane - Complete 1957 Riversides
Big Al replied to GA Russell's topic in Album Of The Week
I think I grabbed the last copies each of the K2's of MM and TM&JC from Newbury Comics, and I have to agree with Chuck: these mono mixes sound unbelievably good. So much presence without being overwhelming. Hawk's solo on "Ruby My Dear" sounds so tender, where the stereo version I've heard sounds cold and brittle. Glad I waited for these. -
In the US, $2.95 for the first disc, $1.00 for each CD after that.
-
There's also this one, 40% off all single-disc CDs, limit 3 thru 12/12.

I don't know that I could have a best Who album. Some days it's Live at Leeds (and Tim, if you haven't heard the complete uncensored LAL, PM me. Hearing the full versions of "Shakin' All Over" and "Magic Bus" were revelations); if I need a good midlife-crisis self-pity party, Who By Numbers and especially "Dreaming from the Waist," "However Much I Booze," "Imagine a Man," and "They're All in Love" do the trick every time. If I wanna relive my late-elementary memories, I'll throw on Tommy. Every now and then, Who's Next is about as perfect as rock & roll gets, particularly "Bargain." Tough call, indeed. But to answer the original question? I think it would have to be "I Can See for Miles." Everything you need to know about the Who (and in some ways, rock & roll itself) wrapped up in a tighter-than-hell three minute blast of fury.

Yes, I listened to it this morning. Another great show, as usual, but this time I beat you to the punch: I already HAVE the Byrd/Adams Mosaic. HA! Seriously, it was a great show, and I was very happy you played one of my favorite tracks from Byrd in Hand, "Here Am I."

I love this place. Because of this board, I have some friends in Michigan to hang out with for a night when I come up there every year (Skid, Chuck, Joe, Randy, Jim). Various trades and sales have flowered into good friendships and the hope that I'll eventually get to meet y'all in person. Plus, I daresay that no other BB has a member as good-looking as Rachel! Where else am I going to read the wisdom of Sangrey? If I ever get the time, I'm gonna distill the best of his posts into book form (which won't be an easy task, letmetellyou!). Then there's NIGHT LIGHTS, which I would never have heard about if not for this place. Talking about baseball every year with Dan is a treat. Where else am I gonna whine about what a lousy team we have here?
