  5. When Dexter stayed with a quote for an extended period of time, he also tended to play it upside down and backwards, repeating figures cyclically in different keys, and wrung the shit out of it harmonically and rhymically. Sure, he probably overplayed some of them ("Mona Lisa", "I Hear Music", etc etc), but to me it's always worth letting the more mundane quotes slide by while I wait for the more masterful stuff. I also get the feeling that I recognize most of the tunes Dexter quoted. That's not to say he never went obscure, but comparing Dexter to say Paul Desmond, I feel like it's easier to ride along without feeling like some references are going over my head. I love Desmond too, btw, and I think that along with Bird and Dexter and a few others, he deserves to be mentioned with the elite in this category.
  6. I seem to be emerging from my holiday stupor... I'd like to get in on this too, if I'm not too late. e-mail sent.

  12. Fwiw, Sjøgren lists that as from July, 1970, station WTTW "Just Jazz" program... and with slightly different timings. #1 listed as "Long Tall Dexter (theme)". Issued on "Charlie Mingus/Dexter Gordon/Charlie Parker" (J for Jazz JFJ 802).
  13. The godfather of bossa nova guitar (and of Bossa Nova, for that matter) is Joao Gilberto. His early recordings are unfortunately OOP, but there are plenty of recordings from the past 20-30 years still available. Of course, he also sings. Definitely not new, as you've already realized. Trio Da Paz "Brazil From The Inside" (Concord) dates back to 1992. Lubambo has played and recorded with a variety of artists from all over the globe. In addition to those you listed, he's recorded with: Ana Caram,Pamela Driggs,Vincent Herring,Joyce,Raphael Rabello,Yo-Yo Ma,Cesar Camargo Mariano,Paula Robison,Cyro Baptista, and Luciana Souza.

  17. At least he didn't credit it to himself, eh?
  18. Just some random thoughts... I wouldn't even begin to use Yanow's opinions (or any at AMG) as a way of backing up my own. Believe it or not, there are people here who own more than 80 Dexter recordings. IMO, "Strings and Things" and "More Than You Know" do not "pale" in comparison to Dexter's other work in terms of quality... they're just different (like "Something Different"). For me, that quartet recording with George Duke is kind of "pale", though. I was never real crazy about that budget album with Lionel Hampton, either. Fun thread. I have no problem with Allen's posts, either. He's entitled to his opinion, even if there is something seriously wrong with him (but we already knew that). As usual, it's pretty tough to add anything profound after Sangrey has posted. So, I'm with Jim, Stereojack, Dan, John L... and basically everybody else (except Allen, but he may yet someday own over 100 Dexter recordings). BTW, the Steeplechase recordings span from 1962 to 1976, and include some great sidemen in addition to the lesser-knowns. I've forgotten exactly why I felt a need to say that, so take it fwiw. Whoever it was that recommended the "Swiss Nights" series as a great example of post-'74 Dexter... BIG The "Cool Summer" series DVD is worth picking up. Dexter was in good form, and even sported a wine red jacket for the folks at Paul Masson. Cheesy packaging, though.
  19. Just reporting back to say that I've never heard the Harold Land album, but it seems likely that Jim is correct re the miscredit. I don't think I've ever heard the Lane tune. I've encountered this phenomenon before as well (can't think of any specific examples right now, but one was a Mel Torme composition which he recorded, which had the same title as another well-known tune). In a similar vein , I came across a post at AAJ today where somebody mentioned the tune "Only Trust Your Heart", and said that it was composed by Benny Carter. This conflicted with the info I had (crediting it to Sammy Cahn and Nicholas Brodsky), but there seems to be widespread credit given to Carter. Anybody know anything about that one?

  21. I struggled with this question for awhile, and wondered how Lane got credited on the Land album. Then a few Google searches turned up this: [from: http://www.originals.be/eng/main.cfm?c=t_upd_show&id=7253 ] YOU'RE MY THRILL (Jay Gorney/Sidney Clare) o: Mike Doty Orch. (1933) - Bluebird > Introduced in film Jimmy & Sally. Vocal: Ward Silloway. Jay Gorney also wrote Brother Can You Spare A Dime. c: Lena Horne (1941) with Charlie Barnet's orchestra, Billie Holiday (1947) , Chet Baker (1950s) , Julie London (1950s) , Ella Fitzgerald (1950s) , Robert Palmer (1990) attributed to Washington/Lane, Maria Muldaur (1994) , Joni Mitchell (2000) , > Not to be confused with Ted Lewis' You're My Thrill written by Ned Washington & Burton Lane for the '34-film Here Comes The Band. Odd that they seem to have been written around the same time.

  23. Ah, I hadn't noticed that (surprised it wasn't mentioned sooner). Whoever wrote the description must have looked at the inclusion of "Swing Guitars" in Tal's discography, and made an ASSumption they shouldn't have made.
  24. Hmm... I'm not sure I understand the comment... Does it have something to do with the LP ("Swing Guitars") that I'm using for an avatar? Those were of course three different sessions (the Farlow tracks are also on the original Norgran, "The Tal Farlow Album").
