  2. The Warriors are finally beginning to recover from the humiliation in New Jersey on Dec 18th (followed by four losses in a row). They edged the Celtics the other night, and tonight they came from behind to beat Dallas at their place.

  5. Hmm... with the new Dexter thread dominating today's action, I thought this was the ideal time to bump this and raise the question.... anybody?...

  7. I'm curious about this. I remember a number of years ago when the VHS version was in the local stores. At that time, I wasn't in a VHS-buying mood I guess, so I put it off despite my Dexter obsession. Later, when I heard it had come out on DVD, I figured I'd pick it up when I came across it at one of the local stores. I never came across it. In fact, I had forgotten all about it. I just did a quick Google search, and it appears that the DVD version is only available in the UK, Australia, New Zealand... WTF? Was it ever distributed on DVD in the US?

  9. So, that would indeed be good news, and we should be thankful for that, but what about additions to the catalog (new (re)issues)? I wonder what they'll offer besides rehashes (remasters) of previously issued titles, and compilations...

Blues in the Barn (Giuffre) - 4:43 Atlantic sessions originally produced by Nesuhi Ertegun Produced for release by Michael Cuscuna Executive producer: Charlie Lourie Producer's note: Because of the variety of musical settings in these Jimmy Giuffre recordings, the sessions are not presented in strict chronological order, although all the tunes within them have. Sessions are assembled for musical compatibility. For example, Giuffre's first Atlantic album The Jimmy Giuffre Clarinet, which has a chamber music-like quality, is followed by his five collaborations, all on clarinet, with the Modern Jazz Quartet. The output of the trio with Jim Hall and Ralph Pena or Jim Atlas on bass is kept together on Disc Four, while the later trio with Hall and Bob Brookmeyer is grouped on Discs Five and Six. Many of the Atlantic sessions were recorded at an unusually low level, causing a lot of tape hiss. Becuase of the wide timbre and delicate nature of Giuffre's music, it is impossible to eliminate this hiss without drastically flattening the sound of the instruments, which are otherwise beautifully recorded. There are some electronic ticks on Da Capo with the MJQ and on the Music Man that are in the original recording. The occasional clicks in the Four Brothers Sound sessions are the sound of the engineer punching the record button in and out during Giuffre's overdubs on one of the first eight-track tape machines in use. 21. No doubt about it. I got into it with somebody at AAJ awhile back on this same thing. I'll admit that the lyrics to MFT might seem a little schmaltzy by today's standards, but the music is class all the way- just what you'd expect from the great Richard Rodgers. So, I disagree. I think Trane (and Miles, who also dug Rodgers) had taste. Yeah, but they could pull it off. Yeah... but in this case I'd say there wasn't that much to "pull off". Just my opinion regarding MFT. Basically, the whole "argument" at AAJ revolved around the idea that since jazz artists had always drawn from the well of pop music, show tunes, etc, that they should be just as able to do so today. I'm not saying that there's nothing of value being written anymore for pop consumption, but I think the well is shallower than it used to be, and I don't see (hear) too many Richard Rodgers (Rodgerses?) around today. That be all I be sayin'.
  22. Well, I set myself up for that one. I suppose I'd have to agree with that.
