  1. Ron, I would recommend trying Hiroshi Tanno at hiroshi@earlyrecords.com He's fast and cheap. That's who I purchase all my Japanese stuff from. Brad, check this out: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=8706 Also, did you know you can order the Eddie Higgins Venus CD's direct from Eddie? He used to sell them for $15 (that may have gone up slightly, but it's still a great way to get them).
  2. and an earlier thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=8706 I'm not sure why anybody in the U.S. would buy from Japan on these...
  3. ... the "greeetz" clued me in right away, and this list only confirmed who we're dealing with here. B-)
  4. I just recently picked up a Tjader CD to add to my too-small collection of his work. I found it used, and at a great price, and it's turned out to be a wonderful gem... THE SHINING SEA (Concord, recorded in 1981). Of course, this isn't the Latin side of Cal, but I had to mention it here anyway. Eight Johnny Mandel tunes, performed by Cal with: Hank Jones, Scott Hamilton, Dean Reilly, and Vince Lateano.
  5. Paul, have a look at this recent thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=16393
  6. Yep, it was a VME.
  7. Oh, that reminds me... "north and south" too. In the south, we can't forget about Odeon, Elenco, Philips, RGE, Lumiar, etc etc B-)
  8. Welcome, Paul. There's plenty of love around here for Cal and other artists who excelled at jazz a la latin. Browse around, and enjoy. Oh- there's a really great thread here called "Hard Bossa". B-)
  9. B-) Well, I was thinking in terms of other labels under the Concord umbrella ( the "Concord umbrella"... did I just say that?), and you had already said Contemporary. But like Lon, there's a LOT o' labels I dig, west and east. ... but everybody knows BN is better than Prestige.
  10. Riverside
  11. Hey, didn't they get what they deserved? I mean, a devout Baptist man in his 60's trying to sneak a peek at Ms Day in her pajamas. It's shameful. BTW, wasn't "devout" a Slim Gaillard term? How did that ever get hooked up with religion?
  12. When you count to 3 and snap your fingers, will we feel normal?
  13. I agree. I would also recommend the Mosaic material (which I have as individual discs, including AT THE ORGAN- with Donaldson, Burrell, Blakey and others). I love everything he did with Kenny Burrell, and would recommend ORGAN GRINDERS SWING, BLUE BASH, STANDARDS, and SIX VIEWS OF THE BLUES.
  14. Go here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=64
  15. Paul Humphrey, drummer? ... the kid got it...
  16. Trivia question (somebody will get this pretty quick, I suspect): One of the musicians mentioned here was on the Lawrence Welk show for several years...
  17. The following is an even bigger longshot, but since there's nothing to lose... While doing some Googling today, I came across a link to this page from the Austin City Limits webpages at PBS: http://www.pbs.org/klru/austin/artists/program249.html I remember watching this broadcast in 1979, but I haven't seen it since. Anybody know anybody who collected old A.C.L. tapes? B-) Video OR just audio would be great...
  18. Up for another try... As I say, I have all of the music in analog form, but I'd still like to find the (Edsel) CD...

    Grant Green

yes, there's one of grant, burrell and barney kessell playing together in europe around 1970 or so I'd guess. It's on Jazz Guitar Masters Vol 1 or 2 (can't remember which one). Just one tune./ Apparently they played Hammersmith Odeon 'Jazz Expo' in London in 1970 - Grant being a late sub for Tal Farlow. I wonder if this is where the video was recorded? A couple of things about this... I received a VHS dub of that a number of years before it was released on DVD. I haven't seen any DVD version yet, but on my copy, they're introduced by Ronnie Scott. I don't know anything about the Hammersmith Odeon 'Jazz Expo', but I always assumed that it was taped in Scott's club. Once when I was searching for photos of Burrell online, I found a shot of those three guys playing, but they were dressed differently than in my videotape. So, perhaps there's more video (or audio) out there somewhere...
  20. People always talk about their different favorites, but I'm tellin' ya- the Thin Mints always disappear first.
  21. After 20 years, the details are a bit foggy. I remember getting a direct mailing from them announcing the Monk BN set (can't remember if it was one of their early 6" X 9" cards, or whether it was folded, or...?). I don't know where they got my address. I bought the Monk, Clifford Brown, and Tina Brooks sets on LP. I think my first CD sets were the two Chets (Chet was on the cover of the "Presenting Mosaic on CD" brochure).
  22. Hey, get your own material!!
  23. Gotcha. In that regard, I kind of hoped that my classic "Blindfold Test Parody Thread", might have helped spread that message... in a kind and gentle way... Seriously, it might be slightly idealistic to think this can fully come into effect, but then again it's better to mention it once in awhile than just put things on auto-pilot. So, I'm glad you mentioned it.
  24. I'm not even a true Lester (or Billie) aficionado, and I'm not one who buys every jazz boxed set out there, but, in a nutshell... BUY BOTH. The Billie Holiday box is a work of art, IMO, and I don't mean just the music.
