Al, I know exactly what you're talking about. Sometimes I find myself not knowing what to play, or indeed not knowing if music will do anything for me that particular day. Sometimes I even feel like I should listen to something, like a musician should practice, but that usually doesn't work very well. Don't sweat it, I say. Don't force it. Occasionally I'll get inspiration from letting somebody else determine what I'm hearing (turning on the radio), and there are times when I'm more in the mood to play my guitar than listen to the stereo. But there are also times when I get more out of just having it quiet. Just trust your moods, and don't worry about it. Your music collection will remain a vital resource for your soul's enrichment... when the time is right. Oh yeah... the other thing you can always do is write me a a funny e-mail. After I've responded with my usual lame attempts at humor, you'll NEED some music to put you in a better mood.

One of my LP's has been out on loan since about 1937 (I'm sure I'll get it back, though) So, I traded for a copy of the Xanadu/EPM CD version some years ago. Trouble is, there are only 6 tracks (they omitted one track from each album). I'll probably do what I always do... wait and pray for a used copy. Just the other day I (finally) picked up the CD versions of two Concords I hadn't spun in ages- A SIGN OF THE TIMES and CHROMATIC PALETTE. Talk about some advanced Tal!

Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Jim R replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Thanks John. That would be my vote. I don't think that's too much text. Very nice design. "Simple" is fine, but the deus design doesn't have much visual appeal to me (especially on the back, where the real opportunity to catch the eye exists). -
Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Jim R replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
John, I like skid's version of your design (for a large rear logo). Can we see that on a grey shirt? (I don't think they're going to "buy" the lavender, John ) -
Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Jim R replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Jim (B-3er) posted about that issue, and I don't think anybody ought to challenge his position. It's HIS logo! Also, the idea that the design need to make clear what this site is about has been discussed. This is getting to be a long thread, but I hope everybody's reading the whole thing... -
I saw the latter portion of the Denmark-Italy match this afternnon. Both keepers turned out to be the men of the match. Just as in the Korea/Japan WC, Denmark look very disciplined and determined; Italy looked very sharp in some of their attacks, but not quite sharp enough. I was disgusted by Totti's viscious foul in extra time. He was lucky to get yellow- the foul deserved red. I hope Henriksen (sp?) will be okay for their next match. Beckham's penalty was pretty bad (not low enough, not high enough, not left enough... a lot of keepers could have made that save, I think); and the english defender who made the beautiful pass to Henry in the penalty area to seal England's fate... what can I say... D-U-M-B. Dmitry, the coverage I saw was on FSW (Fox Sports World), which is the one premium channel I've added to our extended basic cable service (I added it last October so that I could watch a rebroadcast of a match I had missed- the SJ Earthquakes miracle comback against the LA Galaxy in last year's MLS playoffs). If you can't get that, I would think that a spanish-language channel might air some. That was the only way I got to see any of the World Cups back in '74, '78, '82, '86, and '90. Hooray for Univision!!

Organissimo (dry) t-shirt contest
Jim R replied to Upright Bill's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
So... nobody wants to argue about colors? Oh well, I can show this to my wife... "See, that's lavender honey"... "No, that's fuschia"... "No, no, it's not. That's lavender. Fuschia has more pink in it". "Well, I'd call it fuschia. "Well, you could, but you'd be wrong". "Remeber that blouse I wore on Friday?" "Yeah..." "That was fuschia". "Right, but that wasn't the same color as this"... Nothing like a good color argument. -

BTW, I've got my browser's tool bar set to a light purple that's pretty close to that color, to match this site's colors. ... and I think a lavender shirt would turn more heads than a white or grey. But I would understand if some of the folks here didn't dig the lavender (not the most masculine of colors, in some people's eyes...). -

Technically, I'd call that lavender. Fuschia is brighter, with more of a pink than purple tinge. Take a look: -

I'd say white or grey. I dig long-sleeved tees too, but I don't want to be a troublemaker. ===== I also like Noj's design (in fact, I was going to give him a shout out if he hadn't beaten me here). You guys are talented! If more than one design became popular here, I'd buy one of each for sure. -
I still don't have that Rosinha Elenco disc. Gotta correct that situation. ===== IMO, one of the best from recent years. The band includes Paulo Braga (perc), Lula (guitar), and Billy Drewes (ts, cl). For those who don't know, Rosa is a guitarist/vocalist, sometimes referred to as "Joao Gilberto in a skirt". I don't know about that, but she is dynamite.

Pillar of FLAME this is a strange thread! (Hey, that works... and I thought it would be difficult to pull it off). Anyway, welcome, and don't ever change. B) ... the Bay Area, huh? hmm... doesn't ring any bells, but then I'm really old now, so...

Track 7 continues to stump me... this does sound quite a bit like the Jazz Crusaders, as some have suggested. Still, I can't say for sure. It's frustrating to me, because they were a favorite of mine back in the 70's. I had about 10 of their albums. The theme on this track just doesn't ring any bells for me, but then I still haven't heard much of their 60's output (so much still OOP after all these years!). BTW, wouldn't that be a good candidate for a Mosaic set? Maybe it's been suggested in the past. Apparently they did record some rather "weak" pop stuff (according to Scott Yanow, at least) on Pacific Jazz, but I can't find any likely matches. This tune (the melody, the rhythm) just screams 1966- give or take a year or so- to my ears. That should help to nail this down, but I can't seem to do it...

Welcome, walsp!

Not sure about CD (I would think so), but it was reissued in Japan on vinyl at one time. Regarding the Bennetts, I haven't heard AMEN, but I've had ENFIN for years, and it's an old favorite (I got a BMG France CD reissue through an importer about five years ago). Personally, I strongly prefer Rene Thomas to Jimmy Gourley.

Excellent point. This is what worries me. The other thing is, I haven't thought very highly of Concord in recent years. I'm not really a "label enthusiast", so I don't know exactly what all has transpired since Carl Jefferson's passing, but things have certainly gone downhill in terms of their overall catalog. They used to keep a lot of things in print, up until a few years ago...

This comment reminded me that I had never bothered to do much reading about Chappaquidick. I was only 13 in 1969, and come from a family that's not all that interested in politics. 35 years have gone by, and I've never really thought much about it. Anyway, I did a quick search online today and found the following site. I don't necessarily believe all of it, but I found this analysis of the whole thing extremely interesting and very well thought out and presented: Chappaquiddick: A Profile In Cowardice

Yes, those two are similar, and can be substituted over the same changes, but they're still easily distinguishable melodies. I was really asking about tunes that are virtually identical.

And probably WAY too expensive! But seriously, I can imagine, Lon. Our local Tower was practically my second home (no, I didn't work there) from the mid-70's up until a few years ago. One thing that would make me less sad when it closes, though, is all the reorganizing/remodeling that's taken place over the past decade (one can now hear two different kinds of music at the same time, at almost any position in the store ). It hardly feels like the same place anymore. BTW, isn't Big Al always priceless? BTW #2, this thread title says "Tower Records in Austin... 30% of everything". "30% of everything? Now, I know Tower is big, and I know Texas is big, but...? Sorry, won't happen again (not today, at least)...

This is not a recommendation, BTW. I had his other Columbia LP COLLEGE JAZZ: MODERN. Very... forgettable.

How Long Has Jazz Been In Your Ears?
Jim R replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I was listening to some jazz when I was in high school in the early 70's, but I didn't make it my main focus until around 1975 or '76. So, almost 30 years. -
As some of you may have noticed, veteran jazz and brazilian guitarist Joe Carter has become a member here. Before falling in love with and devoting his full attention to the music of Brazil, Joe made a name for himself in jazz, recoring in the 1980's on his own Empathy label with the likes of Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, and Rufus Reid, among others. A brief (inadequate) bio/discography can be seen at AMG: Joe Carter page. Pay no attention to the "electric Chicago blues" label under the "styles" category for a few of Joe's individual recording listings. That's another Joe Carter. I posted a link to Joe's Brazilian Jazz page in the "Hard Bossa" thread I started recently. Joe's homepage at Jazz Corner is located here. Welcome, Joe. Now we have a legit Brazilian music authority among us. B)

I still say... for $35, you should have gotten more cover art than that. But then again Master Carter, cover is very much like Joao... uncluttered, deceptively simple yet beautiful, softspoken and yet very direct. HEY, I think I'm beginning to get this stuff! Grasshoppa shut up now, and go listen to CDR.
