Since this was one of only two threads I could find where Burt Goldblatt was mentioned (the other being a topic devoted to David Stone Martin), I thought I'd post a 10" cover that I just came across online. I've never seen it before, and I've seen quite a few. Anyway, with props to Burt Goldblatt and his distinctive style...

Okay, I haven't found much, but I did find evidence that somebody already knows that it was the Johnny Smith on that Williams recording. http://www.classicjazzguitar.com/articles/article.jsp?article=1 http://www.classicjazzguitar.com/articles/article.jsp?article=26

Hmm... re the guitar player, you said you "knew the name", but didn't know much about him. I'm a guitar nut, and at first I thought I'd never heard of him. In fact, it looked to me almost like an alias, used for contractual purposes. "John Smith"? According to Lord, this player appeared on only this one recording. Seemed odd, given his talent. Then it dawned on me. It's Johnny Smith! John Henry Smith, Jr. is his full name. This would have been an early recording for him, and one that I've never seen in any of the selected discographies I've seen of his work. That run that he played at the end of his solo is not the sort of thing you'd hear from some off-the-street player with one recording to his name. Now I'm off to see if I can dig up any more info about this.

It takes just a moment for each signature and the artist is usually happy to do it, to see which of his albums I brought in and have a chat with me too. I'm not pushy about it--if it happens, great. If not, I completely understand. But like I said, I do derive some value from seeing these autographs and the memories they give me as I load a disc in my player. A gracious person will oblige you, even if they're thinking to themselves: "Why is this guy asking me for three autographs?". That's all I'm saying. Wouldn't one autograph- stored wherever you find it convenient- suffice? Just curious. I'll get off your back now.

I'm curious about that too, BFrank. I still have several hundred LP's I've been meaning to sell, and I don't really want to go the individual/ebay route either. I've sold some to stores (Grooveyard, Dusty Groove, etc) over the years, but it's been awhile. Any details you'd care to share would be appreciated.

When I pull a disc off the shelf that has an autograph, it gives me a memory jolt of watching the artist perform and meeting him. This puts me in a slightly elevated state to hear his music. For example, until I saw Bobby Hutcherson live, I had no clue how much humor and energy he put into his playing. Of course each musician has physical idiosyncrasies, affectations or traits that relate to their music. I don't "get it" without seeing them perform. I believe it's important to listen in that context, and the autograph can help me get there. To each their own, I guess. But for the convenience of the artist, couldn't you just ask for one autograph, and pull that one out whenever you're going to listen to a CD by that artist? I could see some artists being put off by being asked for multiple autographs- even if they politely oblige. This I completely understand, and I've had a few of these experiences. Nicely done, Marcello. Thank you for sharing these.

I don't understand the appeal of autographs (especially multiple CD booklets), but I do understand the appeal of photographs. Thanks for sharing these.

Some kind of social networking feature where people can listen to what their friends listen to. Like "genius", I turned it off in my preferences and hid the iTunes sidebar. I can sample tracks in the store without seeing "ping" appear, so maybe my settings helped. EVERYTHING is being tweaked these days (search engines, e-mail server software, ebay options, etc, etc), and as far as I'm concerned it's making everything less efficient, less convenient, and less appealing.

Command-I. There's usually too much info to read in a columnar format. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. If you wanted to, for example, search for all your albums with Gary Peacock, you would need to be in columnar format, no?
-
I was going to ask you that, but I figured you had already done that, otherwise, how could the info possibly display? Also, don't forget that each time you click a field heading when your music is displayed, it will re-sort in the opposite order. Interesting... thanks for the tip.

I don't follow you here. Please elaborate, if you would. I have done many searches (in iTunes, that is- not on my iPods) for sidemen info in my Comments field. OK: The track "Hallucinations" by Keith Jarrett, from the album "Whisper Not." See the attached file for what I entered into the Comments field. Now, if I do a search for "Peacock," this track does not come up. This does not make sense to me at all, unless you're doing something different from how I do it. One question comes to mind- are you using quotation marks in the search box? If so, that would cause the search to fail (I just checked). I've never used quotation marks in my iTunes searches, as I might when using Google or a web search engine.

I don't follow you here. Please elaborate, if you would. I have done many searches (in iTunes, that is- not on my iPods) for sidemen info in my Comments field. By pure coincidence, before I logged on here, I was just using this very feature to take inventory of some Ike Turner compilations that have overlapping tracks, so I could delete some duplicate tracks. I typed "Ike Turner" into the search box, and the results included albums where there was a sideman named "Turner" along with an occurrence of "ike" (in this case, someone named "Mike"). My pleasure. I like these kinds of threads, both for sharing info and so I can learn a trick or two also.

I see what you're saying, but you could actually do some of these things now, with a little bit of compromising (mainly accepting a different name for each feature, such as "grouping" instead of "label"). Here's what I mean: To sort by recording date, you could enter the date, in YYYY-MM-DD format, in the "description" field of the Video menu. Select all the tracks of an album, select "get info", click in Video, and enter the recording date in the "description" field. Click the "description" box in the "view options" window from the View menu, and then click on the "description" header in your iTunes display to sort by date. I already enter personnel in the "comments" field. This would allow you to search for all albums that include a given artist (whether they're a leader or sideman), but I'm not sure how you'd be able to sort by a given sideman. A substitute for a "label" field could be the "grouping" field, which I used to use to designate my recordings vs my son's when we were sharing a Mac. The main issue with all of the above would be the task of entering all this data.

I feel the same way, even though I only saw him once (quintet with Stewart, Nelson, Swainson and Clarke- SF, '95). Very memorable. RIP.
