  1. I used to have the original vinly also, but I've forgotten... did the liners include the "cartoons" Dmitry refers to?
  2. Me neither. The only thing I know for sure is that I have a few thousand less than I had 5 or 10 years ago, and it feels good that way (especially since I mostly listen to MP3's now). Reducing clutter is very refreshing.
  3. I've got to hand it to Harbaugh. Stanford definitely has decent talent, but it looked to me like VT was dramatically outcoached. On those long runs from scrimmage, and especially on those TD passes, the VT defense was repeatedly way out of position. Luck was being praised by the announcers for being so deadly accurate (and he was pretty sharp), but on several of his big pass plays, all he had to do was lob a safe ball out there to a WIDE open guy. That was all about coaching, play-calling, making adjustments. Oregon's offense is definitely outstanding, and Chip Kelly has been masterful this year (especially in the 3rd and 4th quarters, when they've really run up the score). On the other hand, I've only seen Auburn once (vs South Carolina), and Newton looked like Superman. Absolutely unstoppable. I don't envy either defense, but whichever one steps up and prevents big plays, that will decide the game. Should be fun.
  4. I'm pretty sure it was 1990 for me. I tried to ignore CD's for as long as possible, having been heavily active in buying vintage jazz LP's throughout the 80's. I saw a Sony 5-disc carousel player, gave in to the temptation, and was soon selling LP's. I think my first CD's were OJC's... Miles on Prestige, probably.
  5. Wow, congrats. Pretty amazing that you were able to get it at that price in a huge marketplace like ebay (as opposed to being in the right place at the right time at a local auction or an estate sale or something). Back when we were collecting and dealing in 20th Century decorative arts (mostly art deco through mid-century modern), we had some similar $ucce$$e$. It's one of the things that puts the "thrill" in the hunt.
  6. See if your answer is found here: http://ronpenndorf.com/labelography.html
  7. You should have asked us about five years ago.
  8. My mind works differently. I thought this was another beer thread.
  9. Rhythmically, eh? Okay, that's good to know. I thought I needed more work on harmony than rhythm, but what the hell do I know about me? I obviously need to compare myself with Elvis more often (more often than never, that is). Btw o Master scribe, "who was", or "who is"? (Please, don't actually answer that).
  10. I ran across a live concert (with orchestra), aired on PBS a year or two ago, which really impressed me. He wasn't going through the motions, if you know what I mean. He still has skills (and desire, and energy), and considering how long he's been around, I really admire that.
  11. +1 Ok, let me say it again - the bands on Elvis's Sun & early RCA records sucked. They had no groove. Period. Find a pocket, a mutual agreement as to where the beat is. I dare you. And Elvis himself...no faults with his voice per se, but...all of his "influences" did what they did far better than he did. The Sun Sessions are some of the most overrated "landmark" recordings of the 20th century. Aimless meandering by the band, narcissistic directionless ramblings by the singer. "Different"? sure. But "musically significant" (as opposed to sociologically important)? I bought the 197? RCA issue of them desperately hoping to find some Deep Secret Meaning Of Elvis that had evaded me since...1962 or so and...nope. Not there. Not even slightly. To me, a lot of it is confusingly bad. Not unlike listening to Ringo singing "Matchbox" (and I'm a Beatles fan, but I absolutely can not listen to that track). The much-lauded Scotty Moore (a legend himself, to many guitar players) has never shown me anything. At all. I just don't get the hype there. For me, it all went from bad to (much) worse as time went by. The last time I saw the '68 Comeback Special (which was probably 15-20 years ago), all I could do was tilt my head like a dog. Shallow, weak, phony, pathetic... to me it's truly embarrassing. As a platform for a sex symbol, well, obviously. As a platform for a "musical icon"... ??? Give me a break. Not that I care anymmore.

  14. I love hefeweizen in Summer too... and Fall, and Winter, and Spring. Widmer is the highly accessible, regular favorite that I keep on hand constantly. I like Franziskaner, but among the imports I've tried (some in side-by-side taste tests)... my personal favorites are Paulaner (loved the smooth taste, as well as the carbonation) and Weihenstephaner (so rich and flavorful... it's always sad when the glass goes empty). I've had all of those at one time or another, but when it comes to hefeweizen I've probably put more of these away over the years than any other: Dave, thanks for the heads up. I'll keep my eyes open for that one.

  20. Maybe I misunderstood you... I was showing you the mono version of the same LP. Maybe you meant a mono version with a gold label? (If that's what you were asking, I don't think that exists)
  21. Encountered this many times. Somebody has an original copy where the vinyl is trashed, and decides to combine the coolness of the original cover with a fresh disc. Not an ideal find, but not the end of the world, either. The big question is... how much? For the right price, something like that might still make my flea market/garage sale day.
  22. I do think the Montgomery Brothers are under-appreciated, but I was just making fun of myself (the previous commment about this label possibly being rare) with the rarity comment. And, considering the lofty amounts one sees jazz LP's selling for on ebay, $76 (which would have seemed like a lot back when I was collecting vinyl) isn't very impressive. Any further info or observations about these gold labels would be appreciated. I'm still wondering why they don't seem to be mentioned in price guides and labelographies.
  23. Thanks. I forgot to search the web earlier, but I did find this a moment ago: Looks like the label you refer to. ===== Well... after further searching, I just found this at popsike (and it only brought a measly 76 bucks on ebay, so how rare could it be... )
  24. Had to resize the cover image...
