  1. I have a correction to offer here, but first I just want to say that this track is a longtime favorite of mine, and I thought about including it on my blindfold test (#3). The song ("VocĂȘ Abusou") was not written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, but by the duo of Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. They recorded it in 1971, and it went on to become a very popular song, and I believe a big hit by vocalist Maria Creuza. At any rate, the "Antonio Carlos" part was correct, but it wasn't Jobim. Somebody made a mistake on the credits for "Jazz Poet".
  2. , I basically agree. Well, that's obvious. I guess the point is that Honduras will make things much more difficult (relatively speaking) for the other three teams in group H than North Korea will for the other three in group G. There's no question that Honduras is glad they're not in North Korea's position. I haven't seen much of Switzerland or Chile, but it seems to me that once you get below the top 10 or 15 in the world, the accuracy and relevance of the rankings become more vague anyway. There simply aren't enough international matches (featuring full "A" teams) in-between world cups to give us a clear picture. Which is fine, because it makes the tournament more interesting.
  3. Yeah, group A is tough. If I'm wrong about this, I apologize, because I'm in bed with a horrible cold and don't feel like researching, but I'm pretty sure.other than group G, group A is the only other group with three top 20 ranked teams. According to this blog page, the toughest group by average rankings is group H (it has three top-20 teams).
  4. Love to see a photo (or three), Lon. One thing I hate about shopping around for amps is that so many of them are one shade or another of... black. I've seen some gorgeous custom-cabinets in maple, birch, walnut... and a few with more exotic woods, but they're not exactly common.
  5. Hey, you're describing me! That's cuz you know a bazillion brazillion tunes, right? Playing along with recordings is something I used to enjoy quite a bit, particularly back when I was getting started and was really focused on blues. Played along with a lot of T-Bone, Gatemouth Brown, Freddie King ("Bonanza of Instrumentals" was a great source of inspiration), Fenton Robinson, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Philip Walker... all the blues greats, actually. For some reason, when I got into jazz, I got away from doing that as much. I think I gradually got more and more focused on chord/melody playing and creating my own arrangements. Ditto once again. Neck pickup, 4X10 Bassman- great sound. I love the functionality and performance in terms of the amp's tone controls, too. I've had my Bassman reissue since the early 90's (I think mine is one of the earliest ones, although I got it used via a trade), and no other amp has sounded as good to me since. The only reason I've ever thought about selling it is that even though I know it still weighs about 50 lbs, it seems to get heavier every year. I really don't have to move it very often, though. I just wish I had a nice quality, lightweight solid state amp- maybe with one 15" speaker- that I could throw in the car when I do need to take an amp someplace. I probably wouldn't really be satisfied with the sound, though.
  6. You posted that one already (in November 2008).

  9. I looked for one, when the thread was still young. I also looked for a Steve Allen cover, with no luck there either. This is a tough assignment!
  10. I just stumbled onto a larger scan, and thought it was worth posting. And some more views of the marshmallow sofa (and some variants), for those who may not have seen one...
  11. Aha... okay, that would explain things (my confusion, in particular ). Thanks John, and Brad.
  12. Well, maybe I should have googled before, instead of after posting. Here's a passage from http://www.freddiegreen.org/articles/gp_mrhythm.html "Despite Green's commitment to rhythm, he played a number of single string solos over the years that frequently recalled Eddie Lang's work in the early 1930s. On "The Boll Weevil Song" from the album Brother John Sellers (recorded by an evangelist singer in 1954), he contributed an inspired bluesy solo. The small group recording Memories Ad-Lib [Roulette LP SR-59037], with Joe Williams and Count Basie, has several notable single string outings."
  13. It's been years since I heard it, but I believe it was on an album called "Memories Ad Lib", with Basie and Joe Williams. As I recall, the solos were mostly (if not all) chordal, and brief. Knowing my memory, I could be wrong...
  14. Good point. I had forgotten that I do that also (as opposed to just dragging selected tracks). Hmm... you lost me there. As I said in post #89 above, the unchecked songs still got transferred to the ipod along with the checked songs in my experiment. In the ipod music list, their boxes remained unchecked, but they were there in the list with all the others. I'm trying to wrap my mind around that... especially since it conficts with what I said above. Maybe transferring tracks to a Nano works differently from transferring to an ipod Classic? Anyway, what I used to do to keep my music separate from my son's (in iTunes) was to use the "Grouping" field to label what was mine and what was his. It worked very well, especially since I could just type "Dad's" into the search box and omit all of his stuff from what was displayed in the list. I could also sort using the "Grouping" field as a heading, and separate our stuff that way.
  15. I think I know my jazz soul better than my soul jazz. 5 for 12... ouch. I knew #7, though!

  20. Yeah, with each upgrade I've almost been expecting it. Doesn't seem like a very tall order.
  21. Here's another question (gotta take advantage of MG's thread here ). When my ipod is connected to the computer and all synced with iTunes, and I open the music list, it seems that the contents can only be displayed in "list" format. The buttons for viewing as list/grid/cover-flow all appear to the left of the search box at the top of the frame, but the only one that works is the "list" button. Is this the case for all of you, or is there some setting in the menus or prefs that will allow me to view the ipod contents in grid or cover-flow form?
  22. Okay, I just tried it. Before I dragged and dropped several albums worth of tracks to my ipod, I unticked a couple of boxes (but still included those two tracks in the drag & drop). The result was that those two tracks were transferred to the ipod along with the others, with the only difference being that the boxes next to those two tracks in the ipod music list stayed un-ticked. Oh well, I was just curious what would happen. If one wants to transfer only certain non-consecutive tracks (e.g. tracks 1,3,4,7 and 9 from a 10-song album), it's pretty easy to do by holding down the command key as you click on the tracks you want.
  23. Thanks. I love shuffling too, but more so on the ipod than in iTunes. Most of my iTunes listening is reviewing new additions, where I'm listening straight through each album. Anyway the idea of un-ticking a box to remove something from the list seems a bit unnecessary to me. If I really dislike a song that much, I just delete it, which is pretty uncommon. And I disabled Genius on day one. #1 would also include not playing something in continuous play mode. Re #2, do you mean importing a CD into iTunes, as you mentioned earlier, or moving tracks from iTunes to the ipod? I thought the latter might be useful too, so that one wouldn't have to use the command key when selecting only certain tracks from a given list to move to the ipod.
  24. Thanks mjzee, but I'm not familiar with iTunes DJ. I did a quick search, and it looks like one of those "over-thinking" ideas that Apple has come up with (at least in my opinion). I see absolutely no use for "Genius", for example. Like all these new search engines that try to think on your behalf, they just bug me. With DJ, aside from being a shuffle function (which I do love, and use more often than not), it allows people to "vote" on which tracks are shuffled...? Can't see myself using that. Any other functions regarding those check boxes in iTunes music?
