ipods: is there something a non-hifi person can use
Jim R replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Audio Talk
This reminds me of something I wanted to ask about. I've always noticed, but never found any need to use, those small checked boxes to the left of each song title in the iTunes music display. I've figured out that by un-clicking a box, that song will be skipped during normal continuous play. I suppose that it would also cause that track to be omitted from any drag-and-drop (to an ipod or to a playlist) of the album it belongs with (just a hunch, I haven't tried it). Other than that, are there any useful or imporant functions of these boxes that I should know about? -

You're... welcome? Another indispensable tip (sorry, these things are taken for granted by those of us who are used to using iTunes): The search function!! Upper right corner of the iTunes window, just type in Zouglou. In fact, just type in Zo, or Zou, and all you'll see in your list below is your Zouglou (whatever the hell that is ). Really, iTunes is complex, but once you begin to get used to it, it really is a very well-designed program. Getting used to it takes some time, and I'm even still learning some useful tips as I go, after years of using it. Keep asking questions, preferably one or two at a time. Seriously, a lot of folks including me might benefit from this sharing of ideas. -

One other thing regarding sorting... when you click on a new column heading, your music will be re-sorted by that heading (e.g., "Artist"). If you click that same heading ("Artist") again, it will reverse the order (in this case, alphabetically, or in the case of "Date added", chronologically). -

I should add to my previous post that once you've selected your view options (column headings), these can be easily re-arranged in the display when you're viewing your music list. Just click (hold) and drag any of the columns to the left or right until they're in the position you want. -

MG, as Noj suggests, finding things in iTunes is all about the auto-sorting function. You can pick and choose what headings you want to see when you're in "Music". You do this by going to the "View" menu and selecting "View options". Click to select or unselect the various column headings. Once you've done that, and you're back to viewing your music collection, just click on one of the headings to sort the music accordingly. I like to use "Date added", with my most recent additions at the top of the list. At any rate, this can be changed instantly when you want to sort things a different way, but don't worry- any change you make in sorting is not permanent. You can re-sort at any time. -

Some of us (maybe most of us?) sync manually, not automatically. There are things I want to keep in iTunes, but don't want on my ipod. Not only that, but those of us who have multiple ipods want to sync different material from the iTunes library to different ipods. -

No, that was somebody's idea of a good image for the T.G. material they're offering in their online download service.

I was doing a search for a scan of the "Rockin' and Sockin'" LP cover, and I came across this...

First of all, after 30+ years of listening to this, I still get those spine tingles. I've also spent considerable time listening to other guitar players try to replicate it (including me), and... it just ain't possible. There was only one Billy Butler. To put a face (and another brief solo) to the name, here's a clip which was taken from a documentary called "That Rhythm, Those Blues", circa 1980 (?), which featured some great interviews with the likes of Charles Brown, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Ruth Brown. I want to say that this clip was in color in the original documentary, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it shows Billy in his later years, onstage with Ruth Brown:

A label out of Spain, offering material as "previously unreleased", that isn't really previously unreleased? Absolutely shocking. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sou...amp;q=RLR+88642 edit: I think I partially mis-read the comment about what was previously unreleased and what wasn't, but regardless, I tend to be skeptical in these cases until more detail comes to light. Sometimes tracks have been previously issued on scarce albums or CD's that aren't properly documented, and sometimes newly-released "unissued" tracks turn out to be erroneously labeled, so...
