  2. Hey- get lost. (gotta at least keep pace with Allen)
  3. It's about time!! Seriously, welcome back. You've been missed.

  5. My GOD- somebody besides our family owned one of those?! Ours was a '62 also... white, and we added air conditioning for those 4,000-mile trips to hit every national park in the western U.S. (with all our gear on top, it was about the same size and weight as the space shuttle ). It became the butt of many a joke in later years, but I must say it got the job done.
  6. This still "sums" it up for me. For now, at least. Re the first Sullivan show, for some reason I don't remember it as having a big impact on me. Maybe because I was only 8. My brothers and I still went out and bought the records, but the awareness of the "mania" sort of came on gradually for us, as I recall. Since I've never bothered to buy a Beatles songbook (probably because those things typically get so many chords wrong), I've been having fun writing out some guitar chord sheets for my son (17) and I to work on. The theory has been floated that this music has the potential to bring different generations together musically, and so far I find that to be quite plausible.

  8. You ain't kidding, and you may not even realize how right you are! I didn't realize how much he'd done outside of LP covers (and I'm pretty sure I had at least one book that he illustrated when I was a kid... early 60's era). If you're a fan of his art, you NEED to check the following sites out carefully, and follow every link you can find. It's truly amazing how much there is to discover. On one site, there's even a page of interesting vintage album covers (some may be familiar to you, others probably not) that are often mistakenly credited to Flora. http://jimflora.com/index.html http://jimfloraart.com/home.html http://jimflora.blogspot.com/ As of right now, the link I posted several years ago (above, to the Bagatellen site) and also the one brownie posted are still working.
  9. The links (see "next" at the top and bottom of some of his pages) are sometimes tricky to navigate, but here's a page with far more than 3: http://gokudo.co.jp/Record/10inRec2/index.htm Add me to the list of interested parties!

This person (who unfortunately for us has only posted 112 times on this board) encapsulates things nicely, and with obvious hipness. [bold text added by me]. The Esoteric CD is MOTEN SWING (formerly "Bluesin' Around" on Columbia, except with several nice alt takes added), by the way. You will get yourself some serious doses of that velvet whip on these sessions. For a sample, I would recommend the master take of "People Will Say We're In Love", with the volume cranked up. Tone... touch... taste... I think this track may have been THE pinnacle. Oh, and since I was on hiatus when this thread was originally posted, I just want to add that I've always thought that "Soul Call" was top notch KB. I always used to mention that when everybody was having the trite discussions about "Midnight Blue", "Guitar Forms", and all the other AMG-sanctioned, Good Housekeeping Seal Of Approval KB albums (I never cared for "Guitar Forms", btw).

Actually the original release was on New Jazz, but yes, beautiful album. In a thread full of vague generalities both positive and negative, here's something specific to check out. For all the players out there, in particular (guitar and otherwise)... listen to the way Kenny phrases the melody on "I Never Knew". To me, this is one great example of what made KB such a great musician, and not something to be casually glossed over (it's not always about how great the solos are). Ideally, try to find other examples of this tune, especially if you're not familiar with the way the melody was actually written.
  12. Not sure how serious you are (and it doesn't really matter, as this is subjective, and I have no strong position on the matter), but coincidentally I happened to watch some of the Beatles Anthology documentary on Youtube last night, and was really struck by how UNswinging the Stones' performance was on "I wanna be your man", as compared to the Beatles. Nothing to base broad judgements upon, but I couldn't help noticing the stark difference with the clips played one after the other.

I've heard it, which is why I mentioned it above.

  15. I pre-ordered it, and also ordered it, and it should be arriving this afternoon, and I'm also going to buy it during my lunch break today (I'm having a tuna sandwich and some Doritos (sour cream and onion) on the way over, and I'll probably stop and get a diet Pepsi if I have time... I also have to make a separate stop to pick up some unwaxed dental floss and a new flyswatter). I have a coupon, and a store credit that I've had since 2006 when I traded in some JRVG's that I had upgraded to JRVG's (see my previous posts), and I have some extra cash that I got from selling some obi strips with imperfections on them. Anyway, I heard a preview copy at my sister's ex-boyfriend's (long story, I'll explain later) accountant's brother's house, and the mono versions sounded STUPENDOUS. The stereo versions also sounded STUPENDOUS. I'm not even sure which versions I prefer, but I don't think I'll ever need to buy this material again.... will I? When do you guys think this stuff might get remastered again?

I agree. His work with Chet played a big role in those recordings becoming favorites for me. I've always liked his stuff on Contemporary, as well as the live recording "Safe At Home" that was released a few years ago.
  17. I just posted this info in my previous Norton Buffalo topic, but since that's located in the "offering and looking for" forum, I decided to create a new thread. I just found out yesterday that Norton has been diagnosed with lung cancer, which has spread to his brain. Aside from being a great musician, Norton is truly a wonderful human being. So, think good thoughts for him. If anybody wants to send him a message, there is a fan club e-mail link on his website: http://www.norton-buffalo.com/ He reads these messages, and under normal circumstances has always responded thoughtfully. I don't know if he'll be able to do that right now, but I'm sure that he and his wife Lisa will appreciate the support.
  18. I was listening to a local radio show yesterday, and heard some bad news. Norton has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and it has apparently spread to his brain also. Aside from being a fantastic musician, Norton is a fantastic human being. Please keep him in your thoughts during this difficult time. If anybody wishes to send him a message, there is a fan club link on his website. He reads these messages, and under normal circumstances, he has always answered thoughtfully. I don't know whether he'll be able to respond under the present circumstances, but I know that he and his wife Lisa will appreciate the support.
  19. I've been following this discussion, but so far I don't think I fully understand the premise (is the idea to educate people about under-appreciated players?... A comprehensive history connecting the dots in terms of importance/influence?); and I'm a bit puzzled as to the scope (is 1970 the cutoff point, or not?).
  20. This was easier for me to follow than several other posts in this thread.
