Letterman Craps All Over Jazz Again
thedwork replied to dalemcfarland's topic in Miscellaneous Music
imo, the idea that letterman should be putting energy into having jazz artists on his show is ridiculous. it'd be great for all of us on the board who watch it every once in a while, but it's a late night talk show. they have musical guests on who they feel the majority of their viewers will enjoy. if people don't like what they see on the show, they won't watch, and it goes off the air. simple. additionally, they keep the popular music acts for the end of the show to bait people to stay through the whole program (ie: watch more commercials, $$, you get the idea). this isn't rocket science people. anyone who knows the first thing about jazz knows that it's not very popular among the masses - ie: the people who watch late night talk shows. he's not obliged to have jazz on the show, and he's not obliged to like jazz himself. and as far as i'm concerned, the argument that "if it was on these shows every once in a while, it would become more popular and jazz musicians would prosper" is nonsense. carson was an exception, and all thanks to him and his world class band. but it was the exception. nobody is obligated to do as he did. and by the way, imo letterman's little "heroin" joke was not funny. so what... -
Letterman Craps All Over Jazz Again
thedwork replied to dalemcfarland's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Me too Jim: Letterman has boycotted jazz from his show? And he consistently insults jazz musicians? Really? I'm not saying that's not true, but it has certainly flown under my radar and I'm a 45 year old guy who watched him relatively consistently from the mid 80s through about 2000 and keeps abreast of the news and media pretty regular. It's news to me that Letterman "craps all over jazz." I certainly won't put any effort into it but if someone who dislikes Letterman due to his hostility toward jazz and its practitioners wants to offer up some credible articles that evidence this attitude from him, I'd give 'em a look. It's hard for me to believe it - especially when you look at his band. Doesn't make sense. Does he even have much input into who the musical guests are? Maybe so. I don't know. Interesting... -
2nds on the hays. the opening track "Cheryl," imo, is one of the best jazz piano trio performances on cd in recent memory (becoming my personal favorite), and i'd essentially say the same for this cd as a whole. think of all the best elements of jarrett, beirach, and maybe to a lesser extent mehldau, and you've got the hays trio's Live At Smalls. deeply swinging and soulful, dualistically comfortable playing inside or out (or, as only the best players can do, shamanistically doing both at once), while his modern classical harmonic/contrapuntal elements make beautiful bedfellows with more swinging and soulful "folkish" elements - see his arrangement of hindemith's "Ludus Tonalis" for example. and weiss and stewart are right there with him. this trio recording has it all people. don't hesitate.

bump. cleaned up the OP taking out what has been sold, price reductions across the board, and the "freebie" section at the bottom is now 1 with every 2 cds purchased instead of with every 3 purchased. buy 2, get 1. buy 4, get 2. etc... sweet! still lots of very good music for cheap.

Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis - Ralph Vaughan Williams (Slatkin/Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra) Fratres - Arvo Part (Kremer and Jarrett) Unaccompanied Cello Suites - Bach (Rostropovich) Images - Debussy (Paul Jacobs) Henri Dutilleux - L'Arbre des Songes/Concerto for Violin & Orchestra (Orchestre National de France with Isaac Stern, Conducted by Lorin Maazel) the last piece on my little list by dutilleux i first heard while driving. it was so intense and demanded my attention so totally i had to pull over and just listen. awesome piece of music and amazing performance. lots more to mention here of course: Reich, Sor, Gershwin, etc... But the above were definitely the first that came to mind.

if i still lived in the city and had those nights off, i'd be there. anyone who lives close to that and doesn't check out one of those nights is ill-advised. but i'm pretty sure everyone on this board is aware of that. have a great weekend frank

i just finished this last night. i definitely enjoyed it and laughed plenty. also some very personal revelations on her life but she still comes off as somewhat guarded. and that's fine. i just count on her to make me laugh most of the time, and she does. essentially, if you like her already, you'll dig the book. she can really write (which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone familar with her stuff...). but if you're one of the many people out there who find her offensive, don't waste your time. this book will not change your attitude toward her.
