Lorraine Gordon interview
sonnymax replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The waitstaff cleverly timed their clinking of glasses to coincide with the great one's insufferable vocalizations. -
Ends tonight at 11:59!

You can choose to believe whatever you want, but that doesn't change the facts. The DSM removed homosexuality from it's list of disorders in 1973. Every profession employs special terminology to help communicate the complex and intricate nature of their work. Psychology is no different from the law, medicine, or other fields. That being said, practitioners don't typically use such terminology when explaining and discussing matters with clients. Again, it's communications between clinicians, insurance companies, lawyers and the courts, etc. that benefit from sharing a common language that's designed to promote a basic understanding of the situation at hand, which hopefully leads to better care and a more positive outcome.
-
That's not entirely true. The DSM provides a "common language" among health care providers, insurance companies, patient and families that can be used to foster communication, clarification, and proper treatment. The criticisms cited here are rife with inaccuracies and obviously aimed at the anti-pharmacology crowd. Mind you, an experienced clinician may not have need to repeatedly consult the DSM in treating symptoms, but it is a useful tool in the overall delivery of services. Btw, while the pathologizing of homosexuality was undeniably a "black-eye" on the profession, that mistake was corrected 40 years ago.

Is it really better to give than to receive? Who cares when you can give to yourself! The latest Amazon mp3 promo offers $2 off any mp3 album that costs $5 of more. The trick is you must click the "Give album or song as a gift" when you put the item in your shopping cart. Then, just follow the directions given to personalize your gift and click the "Proceed to Checkout" button. Make sure the "Select the entire album as a gift" option is selected. Finally, enter the code "GIFTLOVE" in the box labeled "Have any gift cards, gift certificates, or promotional claim codes?" After you see the code/discount applied, click "Place your order". One last thing, this promo ends at midnight 2/14. There's no rule saying you can't gift yourself. Heck I've been doing that regularly since I was 10. Of course, if you have more than one email account, you can use one of them one as the giftee. Here's a link to the official rules page: amazon promo

Parostatik Disc preeners....any reason they have disappeared?
sonnymax replied to BERIGAN's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
No, I wouldn't use a carbon fiber brush on visibly dirty vinyl, both for the reason cited and for the fact that I don't think it will clean the record. Also, I don't think you necessarily need to buy an Audioquest brush, which is typically 2-3 times more expensive than other ones that almost identical. And as far as Allen's comment goes, I'm suspect he showers with a lot of other, more unusual items than vinyl. -
How common are tiny imperfections in vinyl???
sonnymax replied to BERIGAN's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Remember RCA's Dynaflex vinyl? I disliked those ultra-thin, floppy, wobbly albums, many of which were prone to warping. As I understand it, a lot of pressing plants were using reground vinyl at the time, and this might account for the increase in imperfections. Dynaflex allowed them to use less material, and the new technology supposedly removed more of the impurities. The best use I found for my Dynaflex was wobbling along with the Yardbirds song Hot House Of Omagararshid (ya-ya-ya, ya-ya-ya-ya). -
No one said anything about discrimination. Lon pointed out that the site is sexist, as is the most popular thread on this board.

Unless, of course, you've correctly typed in the address of a website that is not safe (i.e., may contain worms, trojans, viruses). Those kind of sites generally don't have security certificates, and your browser is warning you of a potential threat. I use a Firefox add-on called WOT Guide that automatically rates sites according to trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy, and child safety, and then issues warnings of potential threats when appropriate. It works well, is unobtrusive, and provides some peace of mind. As far as disabling the IE security warning, try going to Internet Options > Advanced, and then uncheck the option that provides this kind of warning.

Would someone please identify the photographer who shot this photo of Cecil Taylor? Thanks in advance.

Parostatik Disc preeners....any reason they have disappeared?
sonnymax replied to BERIGAN's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I think a carbon-fiber brush ($10-15) is good to use prior to playing a clean record. Although it's not nearly as good as a vacuum machine, a wet-brush system like the MoFi (with replaceable pads and solution) is good for a more thorough cleaning. -
To answer your question, one needs to understand what you mean by "does right by her"? You say her symptoms appear consistent with exposure to mold? Has this been verified medically? If "yes", then do the doctors say her medical condition is treatable? Is there any permanent damage to her health? In the absence of a direct connection between exposure and her symptoms, and without a reliable medical prognosis, I can't see any way to establish causation or assess damages. I am most concerned, as I am sure you are, that your mother has a long, healthy, and enjoyable retirement ahead of her. My advice, fwiw, is to focus on this goal and let others who are more interested in publicity, litigation, and compensation pursue their own interests.

And here I thought you were recommending a product for manscaping.

A couple of sources, including The Scribner Encyclopedia of American Lives, cite cerebral aneurism as the cause of death, possibly a congenital condition.

I've been using iTunes to stream some jazz radio stations lately. I forgot how much fun it is not to know what song is coming up next, and I enjoy the chance to hear stuff I don't already own.
-
Each song would be huge, and a new storage and playback device might only hold 30 albums. Each song would take about 30 minutes to download, which is fine if you leave your device on overnight, he said. Oh yeah, that's gonna go over big.

LF: Gerry Hemingway - Slamadam/Perfect World
sonnymax replied to colinmce's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Thanks for reminding me of the fact that I wanted to get some of Hemingway's Random Acoustics titles. I'll probably go the Jazz Loft download route though. -
MegaUpload data could be erased Thursday, says report by Edward Moyer January 29, 2012 11:56 PM PST Data from MegaUpload could be erased as early as this Thursday, a report says--a disturbing prospect for those who might have used the recently shut down cyberlocker for legitimate purposes such as backing up business files. The Associated Press reports that in a letter filed last Friday in the MegaUpload piracy case, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications Group--companies MegaUpload hired to store data--may begin deleting that data come Thursday. MegaUpload's assets have been seized by the government, and its bank accounts have been frozen, Hence, MegaUpload can no longer pay companies like Carpathia and Cogent for their services, the AP reports. cnet news

I don't know that it really matters if I have multiple accounts. If Google is storing information contained in my emails (patients' names, phone numbers, email addresses), then I think a case can be made that their confidentiality has been compromised. It appears there is an exception to Google's proposed changes for government accounts, but not for other accounts that regularly include privileged information that is protected by state and federal laws. We'll see.

This claim is not consistent with the information provided on Google's site about the policy change: Information we collect We collect information to provide better services to all of our users – from figuring out basic stuff like which language you speak, to more complex things like which ads you’ll find most useful or the people who matter most to you online. We collect information in two ways: Information you give us. For example, many of our services require you to sign up for a Google Account. When you do, we’ll ask for personal information, like your name, email address, telephone number or credit card. If you want to take full advantage of the sharing features we offer, we might also ask you to create a publicly visible Google Profile, which may include your name and photo. Information we get from your use of our services. We may collect information about the services that you use and how you use them, like when you visit a website that uses our advertising services or you view and interact with our ads and content. This information includes: Device information - We may collect device-specific information (such as your hardware model, operating system version, unique device identifiers, and mobile network information including phone number). Google may associate your device identifiers or phone number with your Google Account. Log information - When you use our services or view content provided by Google, we may automatically collect and store certain information in server logs. This may include: details of how you used our service, such as your search queries; telephony log information like your phone number, calling-party number, forwarding numbers, time and date of calls, duration of calls, SMS routing information and types of calls; Internet protocol address; device event information such as crashes, system activity, hardware settings, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your request and referral URL; cookies that may uniquely identify your browser or your Google Account. Location information - When you use a location-enabled Google service, we may collect and process information about your actual location, like GPS signals sent by a mobile device. We may also use various technologies to determine location, such as sensor data from your device that may, for example, provide information on nearby Wi-Fi access points and cell towers. Unique application numbers - Certain services include a unique application number. This number and information about your installation (for example, the operating system type and application version number) may be sent to Google when you install or uninstall that service or when that service periodically contacts our servers, such as for automatic updates. Local storage - We may collect and store information (including personal information) locally on your device using mechanisms such as browser web storage (including HTML 5) and application data caches. Cookies and anonymous identifiers - We use various technologies to collect and store information when you visit a Google service, and this may include sending one or more cookies or anonymous identifiers to your device. We also use cookies and anonymous identifiers when you interact with services we offer to our partners, such as advertising services or Google features that may appear on other sites. I'm not totally comforted by this disclosure from Google, but I wonder if the source you quoted is being purposely provocative in their warnings.

As I use Gmail to communicate with patients and Google calendar to schedule their appointments, I'm concerned about potential breaches of confidentiality. What I need to find out is whether Google will have access to the information contained in my emails and my schedule, or whether they are "simply" gathering tracking information about sites I visit while I'm logged into one or more of their accounts. If anyone can direct me to a verifiable source that addresses these concerns, I'd appreciate a "heads-up".

Fileserve Terminates Accounts; Suspends ‘Make Money’ Feature Another file sharing website has reacted to the recent MegaUpload arrests and website suspension. This time Fileshare has decided to take action to clean themselves of any wrong doing by suspending accounts associated with piracy en masse. Many users are signing in to their accounts today, only to find they’ve had their accounts suspended due to a violation of the Terms and Conditions. They’ve also shut down their rewards program, which allowed users to make money by uploading files and sharing the links with “friends and family”. story I think what the big media companies are upset about is having their stuff looted, not whether or not it is done for profit. The fact that the MegaUpload people were apparently getting rich off it just makes it seem all the more villainous. They can hardly claim to be idealistic data-liberators. In addition to paid download subscriptions, these companies pay people to upload files (many of which are illegal) and then share their links on many other websites.

And the story continues... FileSonic disables file sharing in wake of MegaUpload arrests Following the MegaUpload shutdown and indictments last week, FileSonic, one of the Internet's most popular file-sharing services, has disabled its sharing functionality. The service can "only be used to upload and retrieve files you have uploaded personally," according to a note posted on the site's home page. FileSonic also suspended its affiliates rewards program, which paid users when people downloaded their files. Some users on Reddit say the online digital locker has already begun deleting files and even accounts, as ZDNet's Zack Whittaker notes. cnet story
