  1. Wow. I would have thought such news would be welcome on this board. You know, something along the lines of "Thank goodness. Now we can be assured that these valuable works of art will be preserved rather than lost, damaged, or simply discarded by corporate America." Instead, we get every negative angle imaginable, even the WTC (nice touch, Allen). Monday morning blues, guys? Okay, I've put on my flame-retardant tighty whities. Let me have it.
  2. "For protection." Yeah, right.
  3. Yes, you're quite right. "The Great One" also gave memorable performances in films like Soldier In The Rain (as Master Sergeant Max Slaughter), Requiem For A Heavyweight (as fight manager Maish Rennick), and Gigot (as a homeless French mute). Interestingly, Gleason not only starred in this last movie, but he also wrote the original story and music for the film! A very talented man, indeed.
  4. I was a big fan of Gleason as well, but let's give credit where credit is due. Comedy writer Coleman Jacoby, along with his partner Arnie Rosen, was responsible for creating most of the characters you mention. Jacoby also wrote many episodes for TV's Sgt. Bilko, aka You'll Never Get Rich and later, The Phil Silvers Show, another childhood favorite of mine. Previously he had worked as a gag writer for the likes of Fred Allen and Bob Hope on radio. Mr. Jacoby died at age 95 this past November. In praising Gleason and other comedy giants like him, we should also honor the talented people who wrote the humor that they performed.
  5. Why you are, ya big lug!
  6. Big McNeil fan here, having a dozen or so of his recordings in my collection. Just downloaded an early one the other day - Embarkation on Steeplechase. Saw him and Bill McHenry perform at the Iridium a couple of years ago - very enjoyable. McNeil's one of those artists you wish more people knew about, one who deserves a salary that's commensurate with his talent. Thanks for the mention, Larry.
  7. Muchas gracias!
  8. If the French have Jerry Lewis and the Germans have David Hasselhoff, I'm all for giving the Swedes a pass on Donald Duck.
  9. Picked up a bottle of this Brew yesterday. Have no idea what it tastes like, but hopefully it's better than that godawful Panther Ale that besmirched the Three Stooges' name. In honor of the 40th anniversary of the original release of Bitches Brew, Miles Davis' 1970 paradigm-shifting landmark fusion breakthrough, we've created our own Bitches Brew - a bold, dark beer that's a fusion of three threads imperial stout and one thread honey beer with gesho root, a gustatory analog to Miles' masterpiece.Featuring the album's iconic artwork, created by the late Mati Klarwein, on its label. continue reading
  10. I think you're talking about the Miscellaneous Music forum, not the Vinyl Frontier forum that I suggested. A quick search of the latter displayed these various discussion topics: ⁃ What vinyl are you spinning right now? ⁃ Pacific Jazz / World Pacific labelography ⁃ Informal Jazz, Elmo Hope. Any reissues? ⁃ What 78 are you spinning right now ? ⁃ Huge lot of radio station 78s mostly mint ⁃ Uptown Records - Vinyl ⁃ MCA/Impulse reissues ⁃ The Contemporary Jazz Quintet - Debut 151 ⁃ The sound of ECM vinyl ⁃ Your favorite vinyl stores ⁃ Great Finds ⁃ What was the retail price of LPs in the early '60s? ⁃ Are you an OCCASIONAL vinyl buyer? ⁃ Great LP cover archive ⁃ Vinyls are back at FreshSound I did find one thread about covers, but it mostly talks about an online resource for vintage album covers. Oh well, you answered my question. Keep spinnin'.
  11. Please don't take this personally, 'cause I really want to know - why don't you ever post these LP threads in the Vinyl forum?
  12. Excuse me while I whip this out.
  13. I've been looking forward to this performance for weeks. Should be a real treat.
  14. So, that would make him the anti-Moms?
  15. It would be nice if you joined in on some of the many interesting discussions on this board, rather than just show up whenever you want to promote 1201. Just a thought.
  16. I've collected quite a few autographs over the years. Sonny Rollins signed a Prestige twofer back in '83, the first jazz album I ever bought. I got one from Horace Tapscott when he played the Vanguard that I'm very fond of. I also have a copy of Joe Henderson's Mode For Joe that has everyone's signature, except for Lee Morgan. There are many others - Art Blakey, Tony Williams, Jackie McLean, Von Freeman, Art Farmer, Tommy Flanagan, Alan Dawson... I don't think it's "lame" to ask for an autograph from someone you really admire. Almost all of the musicians I've asked have been gracious and appreciative of having a fan who values their art and wants a memento. It's not like they're rock stars or movie stars who has thousands of people clamoring for a piece of them. For me, it's a special reminder of having enjoyed the experience of watching and listening to a great artist.
  17. Whew! For a minute there, I thought you were soliciting sex on the board.
  18. Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, stricken with cancer SUSAN WHITALL The Detroit News Friends and fans of Aretha Franklin offered prayers and good wishes after learning that the Queen of Soul, one of Detroit's beloved musical artists, is suffering from pancreatic cancer. Sources familiar with the singer's ailment told The Detroit News today that she was diagnosed with the often lethal form of cancer. Experts, however, say it can be beaten if detected early enough. Franklin has been quiet about the nature of the illness that prompted her to cancel all upcoming events, including Thursday's planned Christmas concert at the Fox Theatre. She did acknowledge last week that she'd successfully undergone a surgical procedure. Her illness had been an increasing subject of speculation, including a post today by the National Enquirer. Separately, Fox 2 in Detroit reported that Franklin has cancer, attributing the information to "a close relative." The News contacted Franklin's publicist, Tracey Jordan, who did not have a comment from Franklin. Detroit News
  19. Would you like papers with that Allen?
  20. your link is dead. try this one: Virginia This Morning
  21. And the winner is........No one! I guess Chuck and Chris were right as far as it not being as big a deal as the seller hoped. Will there be a Round 2 (a second auction with a lower starting bid)? Stay tuned for another episode of As The Vinyl Turns.
  22. A-FLAC!!! ALAC, aka Apple lossless or .m4a files, is equally good.
  23. I'm very, very sorry to learn of your wife's passing. From your initial post, I get the sense that she was a remarkable woman. More important, it sounds like she was great friend and partner to you. I can't begin to know or feel what you are going through. I just want you to know that like many others here, I'm thinking about you. Best regards, Rob Viti aka "sonnymax", formerly known as "jazzshrink"
  24. The narrator of the video asks, "Could there have been a better way...?" Uh, yeah. The parents could have prepared the child for the process. The father could have helped, instead of shooting the video. Seeing that the child was upset, everyone concerned could have taken a time out. "3 year old probable terrorist"? People have hidden dangerous objects on children before to get through security. There are many things that can be done to increase our safety at airports while respecting individual rights. This provocative thread (admittedly tame by Berigan's standards in other forums) isn't one of them.
