What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
mikeweil replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
Last night before going to sleep: This afternoon: I love Schobert's music more than I do Haydn's or Mozart's ..... -
I can see what you wanted - it looks great! Composer credits are always helpful as there are so many tunes with identical or similar names.

He'll probably promise to lose weight just to avoid another treatment.

Excellent job! Only thing I miss is issue numbers for the albums, especially CDs. I will get me a copy of the Freddie Roach album with Percy France after listening to some tracks on YouTube. You' re doing him justice!

These two albums are quite different for me, in conception. Top Percussion for RCA is a display of various Cuban styles, featuring sacred music on side one (including vocals of ritual texts), and secular on side two (dance and carnival rhythms, including piano). Puente in Percussion for Tico has only the secular rhythms in more of a descarga (jam session) context, with long solos for three of the drummers featured (Puente, Santamaria, and Valdez), no vocals, and only a string bass supporting. Like the five guys entering the studio, opening a bottle of rum and passing it around (or a joint, or none of this, if you prefer), and cutting loose. They were in top form, and Puente said somewhere they wouldn't have been able to repeat this as they all were playing their best that day. Maybe Puente had to fulfill his Tico contract and this was the fastest way to do it - that label was not to go for the concept albums Puente recorded for RCA, I think I read somewhere. All of Puente's RCA albums had a conceptual idea behind them, even though the first tracks were recorded with 78 rpm records in mind. More arranged and such, like in Top Percussion. Both are classics in their different ways, for Cuban percussion, the RCA for the concept, the Tico for the soloing, which is textbook stuff all the way through.

I pre-ordred a copy, along with the Prestige box from Fresh Sound. The latter is oop at the label, but JPC got me one from the German distributor. I feel lucky. Listening to the Hi Jinks Columbia box right now. Mose was a groovy musician.

Craft is found on the Concord Music Group website as one of their labels. To me it looks like they use Fantasy as a pop/rock label, and Craft for jazz and box set reissues. Milestone is listed too, under "Classic Labels" - scroll down.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

This arrived today - excellent new recording on the rarely heard Christian Zell Harpsichord kept in Barcelona's music museum. It sounds different from the other two Zell instruments that still exist. Very interesing, and Guglielmi's approach to these pieces intended for teaching and studies is worth listening to. -
Was Dave Brubeck Approached To Write The Original Peanuts Music?
mikeweil replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Kenny Clare played drums on this version. -
Bought this for AlSears (who plays on the second Swingville album icluded here), but Jordan's playing is so fine - I have a new favourite trumpet player. I never heard more subtle muted trumpet than on the title track.

Maybe Weinstock just went around a few corners and produced a piece of chalk?
-
I'm afraid that approach to music is shared by a vast majority. But it wasn't much better in times when there was only live music. That's what my studies in early music tell me. It's a matter of evaluating and respecting any kind of work and people.

No cover design redit on the original mono LP back.

“The Second Great Trio: Ahmad Jamal On Impulse”

Basically, it was the third great trio, if you count the first with Ray Crawford in place for a drummer ..... -

Bought this first volume of a total of 12 upon first release, but somehow never got around to follow the series. Was lucky to get another five at sellout price two weeks ago, and decided to complete the series. A wise decision, as some are listed as out of print .... but I was able to find them all. Siegbert Rampe also wrote the definitive textbook on Mozart's keyboard music. -
I have only one of the Prestige albums, and not a single one of the Atlantic or Elektra albums, so this is welcome. Offered for 47 € over here. The Prestiges are all on this great Fresh Sound set: Then there was an excellent sounding 3 CD set with the Columbias (which I have): ... then follow the Atlantics. Time to complete my man Mose.
