The ride cymbal sounded distorted, as if the level was set a bit high.

Someone should grab this. It is worth the money. This was one of the box sets that set the standard for Mosaic and others. Sound is good, Keepnews' recollections are a nice read. Everything in one place. I never regretted buying it back then and pull it out regularly.

This weekend's evening bottle: MELNIK 55 2018 Thracian Valley, Protected Geographical Indication From the Bulgarian part of Thracia. Early Melnik is the name of the indigenous grape variety it is made from. Not sensational, but very rich taste after it had some time to breathe.

Last night before turning the lights out: This is extraordinary music. Alessandro's instrumental music is very much underrated, but due to attributions of some spurious sources in the last 20 years the work list has grown considerably. Of course "String quartet" as a genre didn't exist back then, he simply wrote for four strings without figured bass and wanted it to be performed that way. But they wante to sell and so are looking for a label to promete this beautiful and perfectly crafted. I prefer his string pieces to Corelli's.

In the notes to the Mosaic box ( I don't remember who wrote them) the author described his impression that Brooks seemed intimidated by the fast company Alfred Lion gave him, and that Morgan and Clark, in particular audibly showed him where the hammer hang - I thought, too, that it sounded like that. Please have a look at the commentary to that session if you want more - as I said I sold the box set. Maybe I have a photocopy of the liner notes, but no idea where they could be stored.

I had the Mosaic but sold it after buying CDs of the three later albums. I never liked Minor Move for the attitude Morgan et al. displayed towards newcomer Brooks.
