Try Scotch tape, gently press it on and pull it back, several times. no guuarantee, but it always worked when I applied it. -

Only possible problem: There are some copies with some CDs sticking to the cardbord slipcase housing fo the discs due to some excess glue getting into the wrong places - that's why they sold large quantities at a sellout price only months after it was released. In my copy two discs were sticking to the cardboard - I carefully took them out and was able to remove the glue residues from the discs with Scotch tape - they play back without problems. Inspect the set caarefully when you buy a copy. -

Gheorge is spot on with his comments - I have all these LPs and they are great additions to any bebop collection!

R.I.P. Yes he was very popular for a long period of time, but in the 80's all Play Bach LPs were out of print and it was a mild sensation when Zweitausendeins released a five LP box with these albums. I got me a copy but it didn't really fascinate me as I already was deeply involved in period instrument performances of Bach's music. Now is there any album where he play just jazz, no Bach or other baroque music?

Of all "classical" musicians trying themselves at jazz he was the best, IMO - well, if you can label him "classical", that is. His swing was natural, and that is the most important part of it. He was an all-round musician, period. R.I.P.

https://www.amazon.com/His-Musical-Autobiography-KING-COLE/dp/B00ZGUI6BE/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=B00ZGUI6BE&qid=1551907503&s=music&sr=1-1 It's a 12 disc set on Universal, released in 2015. The amazon tracklist is messed up, they list discs 10-12 first (a CD with unissued takes and two DVDs with a documentary and a live show from Australia; the actual disc 1 comes as 4 etc. As an overview of his career for the non-completist it is excellent, you can expand on it any time with single CDs. It comes with a hardback book containing a career survey and full discographical details. -

Nat King Cole: His Musical Autobiography -
So there really are five tracks, and neither the OJC team when they did the reissue CD nor Keepnews when he prepared the box had any clue. The people who maintain the Lord Disco don't have, either - though I admit that they cannot know and listen to everything they list, I wonder what their source for their information was - or it simply was an assumption. That's why I never completely trust any discographical source in the internet, except for those hosted on jazzdiscography.com - and even there you might find minor errors. Serious discographical research is an unforgiving beast. The only guarantee is to get the record and listen yourself.

Just had a listen to this album as in the Milestone Years box - "Out 'n' In" is exactly that, not a mistitled "Black Narcissus". What now?

New Orleans Jazz Orchestra - Songs: The Music of Allen Toussaint
mikeweil replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Sounds good, if a bit tame at times. I happened to step over one of their discs in December, bought and liked it. There is one name they obviously avoid while outlining the orchesra's history ..... -
I could have looked there - haven't been there for a while and remedied that. Thanks for the pointer.

Comparing my pristine condition 1960's Pacifici Jazz LP with the recent Japanese CD resissue - both really sound different. The LP has a more natural balance and dynamics, the CD has the higher frequencies boosted up and the piano less audible in the mix - strange. I'll stick with my LP. Now spinning Herbie Mann - I still know exactly where I bought this LP! This band had a serious groove going!
-
Spinning the old Alantic LP right now - highly recommended as a complementary release, two great performances!

Frank Kimbrough Plays The Complete Thelonious Monk
mikeweil replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Had a listen to the first disc earlier today, and it more than fulfills my expectations. Bemsha Swing on bass sax - hell yeah! And the slow rubato treatment of Light Blue moves it closer to Monk Ballads like Crepuscule with Nellie - if it goes on like this, it's the new box set of the year. I passed on the Schlippenbach set as their approach was much too sloppy for my taste - don't mess with Monk! But this here hits the perfect balance between respect and personal attitude. -

One disc a day. -
Side two has Gerry Mulligan and Bud Shank with synthesizer, harp, and the grand organ of the Grace Cathedral, where it was recorded. Perhaps one of the least known items in the two saxists' discographies. Faintly reminds me of Paul Horn's Inside LPs. Mulligan's baritone in the cavern of that Catheral with its seven seconds decay is something else.
