  1. A few days ago: This evening, 2013 bottle of Primitivo:
  2. This afternoon's package: It is amazing how she convincingly presents music from such diverse stylistic eras: 16th century Neapolitan, 17th century French, and 18th century Viennese.
  3. This is one of the moments where it really hurts that all good things - and good lives - must come to an end. R.I.P, and many many thanks for your insights and all your work. I hope someone will take care of his blog.

  5. Big Al is alive and well on facebook-
  6. I goofed: The Grace Cathedral date was Poncho's recording debut with Tjadert. Michael Smithe played congas on the "Puttin' It Together" LP, Guitarist Bob Redfield, btw. remembered this album was recorded in November 1972, not on January 26-27, 1973 as stated in the album credits, but this cannot be confirmed. The Grace Cathedral album definitely was recorded May 20, 1976, not May 22 as stated on the album cover. Duncan Reid's research was meticulous. Me, too, I thought, until I learned about an LP by Chilean singer/songwriter Memo Aguirre that Ed Bogas produced. Tjader is hardly audible, however.
  7. Good move - the "Puttin' It Together" LP is not a milestone, but never was on CD. It was Poncho Sanchez' first recording, btw.
  8. Looks interesting! Ordered another French organ music CD from the Tempéraments series last night:
  9. Yes indeed - I happened to witness his first and last performance here in town, which also happened to be the first and last of the touring agent involved, who had to retire after back problems involving surgery. Several aspects of an era now gone. Yesterday these two arrived:
  10. Happy Birthday and an extra glass of wine!
  11. The organ and piano on this album are manned by none less than Herbie Hancock, who was not credited for contractual reasons. He is listed for one of the sessions in Ruppli's Atlantic Discography. Herbie had a special contract with Atlantic, allowing him to record a project for other labels every other year that Atlantic didn't want to do, that's how Glory Of Love came into being. There is a companion album The Soul Flutes, where he was not credited - some say Hubert Laws was the mystery flutist. Well, I can hear both. Laws was on Glory Of Love, too. https://www.discogs.com/Soul-Flutes-Trust-In-Me/release/11480826 That vibes player, Henry Watts, doesn't appear anywhere else, could be Roy Ayers.
  12. This was long on my wish list - found a pristine copy on discogs two years ago.
  13. That's the album that made me love Ellington's music! Just spinning:
  14. The band swings like mad on this one! Nice fat arrangements with just four horns, Henry Boozier, Tom McIntosh (who wrote them), Jimmy Heath, and Tate Houston.
  15. Vol. I & II are still available from Fresh Sound, the other two (their website lists only Vol. 3 as out of print) may be found used. https://www.freshsoundrecords.com/11308-jack-mcvea-rabon-tarrant-albums amazon has all four volumes at affordable prices. Their contents can be found in the Tom Lord Disco, I count 36 Black & White sides. (If Lord lists it, it must be jazz enough.) ..... and Lightnin' Hopkins and Otis Spann from the Candid label. EMI started releasing a lot of their R & B catalogue from Capitol, Aladdin, Imperial and other labels under their control, so Mosaic may have been interested but could't get licenses.
  16. 1993 Impulse/GRP CD version
  17. Haven't heard these sessions and cannot comment on drummer Jimmie Smith's playing on them, but he had encountered the organist on the sessions for Kenny Burrell's two double LPs on Fantasy, Ellington Is Forever, in 1975.
  18. I'm still curious - is there a photographer's credit?
