Goooooooooooooooooooooooooool
mikeweil replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The main point is, I think, that many, if not most, do not really understand the life situation of immigrants, or all the more so, second generation immigrants, like Özil and Gündoğan, live in. There is an important quote in the British article linked: “Not meeting the president would have been disrespecting the roots of my ancestors, who I know would be proud of where I am today,” he said. “For me, it didn’t matter who was president, it mattered that it was the president.” Those who criticize him for that do know little about Turkish rules of courtesy, and their struggle for identity between cultures. I have played in a band of Turkish and Kurdish immigrants for eight years, we did concerts all over Europe, and I remember the dozens of political discussions between the musiscians and their friends and fans. We did our first tour through Turkey when Erdoğan first ran for election - nobody was sure about the direction he would take. It is all too complicated to write about here. I respect his position, although I have no sympathies for Erdoğan, and think it cannot be compared to that of Emre Can, who is not as much in the spotlight. I witnessed many variants of seeking identity between these very different worlds, and often children of Turkish immigrants born in Germany turn to the home country of their parents in a way their parents never would. I can see the latent racism, there are signs of it around every day, and think, Özil is right when he says: “In the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose,” Özil said in a new statement on Sunday. “Despite paying taxes in Germany, donating facilities to German schools and winning the World Cup with Germany in 2014, I am still not accepted into society.” Take a look at people like Hoeneß, who, IMHO, should not have returned to his post, and cannot keep his mouth shut. There are at least one third of Germans thinking like that, I'm afraid, and they all play better football than the players on the field, verbally, that is. It is embarassing. The media play their part and want statements fast, where taking your time to think would be better. There are many contradictions in the attitude towards immigrants all over the world, with most politicians opting for easy solutions for a highly complicated matter. It is all very embarassing, as everybody has at least some historical responsibilty for all the events that led to the current situation. One of the big contradictions is having national teams in a world where nationalism turns to its negative sides, the teams of many countries would not be what they are without immigrants and their descendants. On the level of league teams, nobody talks about it, except for right wing German dumbheads making disrespectful remarks about Jerome Boateng. On the level of national teams, it suddenly becomes a problem. How can you separate sports and politics? Not when you stick to the idea of national teams, I think. The difficult reationship between Özil and his father makes things even more complicated - the latter's early statement didn't really leave a choice for his son. -
Hot, hot, hot - my wife and I are glad we cancelled all our travel plans, as sweating at home is a lot more comfortable. This morning we had half an hour of drizzling rain ....

Les Génies du Jazz box set
mikeweil replied to Big Beat Steve's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This one? Ot the jam session? Heard all these LPs on the radio back then, but they were hard to find over here. If they would have put the whole series in a box set on CD, I'd have bought one right away. The LP set can be had cheaply, OTOH - maybe some day I will.... -

Jobim as a soundtrack to the tropical temperatures here: I think the mix of the latter is a bit strange when compared with that of the first which was recorded in a natural room ambiance except for Jobim's piano overdubs.

Count me among the victims who gave up on completing their B.B. King collection ... -
In this case, a subscription to the Tom Lord discography site would be worth considering .... Rust covers recordings up to 1942. The listings on https://www.jazzdisco.org/ have to be taken with a grain of salt. Compare their Wes Montgomery disco, e.g., with the one Noal Cohen just finished, linked on https://jazzdiscography.com - these are some of the best and most elaborate.

I thought it might be a good idea to collect links to discographies of jazz musicians spread over the internet, thoroughly researched ones that is. I got the idea earlier today when receiving an e-mail from the Darmstadt Jazz Institute linking to two files with the chronology and discography of Lee Morgan - the author has written a biography and wanted to update the listings in the book. Attention: clicking these links will open a download window for the pdf files: https://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/leemorgan_chronology.pdf https://www.press.umich.edu/pdf/9780472115020-Discography.pdf The book on the publisher's site: https://www.press.umich.edu/132323/delightfulee/?s=supplemental_materials More to come - please feel free to post your recommendations. Moderators: If this thread proves to be useful, maybe you can pin it?

After Hours with Sarah Vaughan Columbia CL 660
mikeweil replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
The one above was the last, there are three more covering the years from 1944, i.e. her first dates for Continental and all the Musicraft sides, to the early Columbias: There are numerous CDs covering that part of her recording career, but dont ask me which one is the most "complete", by whatever standard. It's hard to find tracklists for all - like the one on Le Chant du Monde: How's that for covers, TTK? -

The Classics CDs of course do not have the alternates issued later on the Legacy reissue -

mikeweil replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
I count 72 issued tracks on various Columbia issues in the Lord Disco, and half a dozen that remain unissued despite quite a number resurrected from the vaults for CD issues. According to Lord some of those 72 tracks are not in the "Complete" box, not to speak of the still unissued .... .... another missed opportunity. The major companies are so fixated on the "original album" .... You have to get the Chronological Classics CD below for the 1949 Columbia tracks not in the box. -

The internet is not free, it costs your monthly access fee. And the info you may find will not always be correct. Nor will be the nice guys on here be without fault, me included. Discographical information always has at least minor incorrect data, even on a reliable source like jazzdiscography.com. Even on the back covers of LPs or CD booklets which make a good impression. -

Reissue of two Decca LPs. This originally cheap Spanish issue now goes for high prices - I was lucky to find a low price offer. Nice, but not as impressive as I thought it would be. Larkins is the congenial accompanist and perhaps shines the most in that role.

$100 OR BEST OFFER - SAM RIVERS MOSAIC BOXSET
mikeweil replied to tjluke68's topic in Offering and Looking For...
The Rivers set is a must for anyone interested in his playing. But perhaps you should set the price a tad lower. -
Perfect music for what is going to be the hottest day of the year, so far .... and to my ears, Jobim's finest US album. That a German wrote the beautiful arrangements with perfect empathy is one of the few things that make me feel fine with being of this nation.

Same here - just last week I noticed another second hand store has vanished. Back to topic - your discussion watered my mouth. I'll buy the new edition.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
mikeweil replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I enjoy this set, but frankly, can understand that the first session in the set was not released at the time. Some of Tommy Turrentine's and Horace Parlan's playing on Comin' Your Way sounds a bit strange, harmonically, to my ears. Jubilee Shout is great (had the Blue Note twofer LP for a while and liked it back then); Another Story is nice but not overwhelming. Wanted to have that for Thad Jones. Looking forward to the rest. -

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Very nice - and a good example that you play what you see and hear in the music. This makes audible just how much late 18th cenrury "classical" composers owe to early 18th century Italian music.
