  1. They will perform here in July - trying to decide about going, tickets are € 40 a piece, and half of the tickets are already sold.
  2. Strange. But for probably the same reason Candido didn't get it right on his first recording with Bryant. On the later date with Art Blakey he got it. A Latin musician wouldn't have written the break that way, methinks. But that's no excuse for not learning the piece properly. On Tjader 1956 recording it grooves like mad. If you think clave or tumbao right through the tune, all is well. The latest online version shows 70 recordings!
  3. Yesterday: Today:
  4. Yep - see my post above.
  5. Three of the seven tracks listed in the discography for this Lee Morgan session were released as bonus tracks on the CD edition of The Sixth Sense.
  6. Seems like they only list the sets on their website they actually have in stock - the James P. Johnson was gone after I had ordered my copy but was back on a week later when they received a few more copies. As soon after they have the Wilson in stock, they will list it. Hope they get the Turrentine along with it.
  7. I was lucky to see him several times with different incarnations of the Eastern Rebellion quartet - always swinging, tasty, and very dynamic - and big ears! One of the great drummers in jazz history.
  8. Each to his own image of Blue Note!
  9. I think Blue Note is just as much hard bop and groove as it is experimental, so they needed musicians for both.

Laws never played tenor sax on those early Chick Corea dates for Atlantic and Solid State, that was Joe Farrell or Bennie Maupin.
  12. I'm really surprised nobody mentioned two essential sidemen: Bob Cranshaw and Joe Chambers.
  13. I haven't forgotten about it .... had to disassemble my whole hifi recently as an old window had to be replaced, and still haven't found the time to hook it all up again and find out the way to get the audio signal to the laptop. It will be done, thanks for the reminder. https://www.discogs.com/Shirley-Scott-Don-Patterson-Lockjaw-Davis-Stompin/release/3751413
  14. On A Clear Day on Impulse has her backed by Ron Carter and Jimmy Cobb - that's a great one.
