That's a nice description of that LP. Must have been a sidespring of his European tour with Elvin Jones in 1974. Grossman was starting to work as a single with local rhythm sections besides playing with Elvin or Stone Alliance; after leaving (Bob Mintzer replaced him) he did this exclusively besides accepting sideman dates, and so the results depend on whatever chemistry develops. The one on the French Musica label from 1978, 'New Moon', is more exciting, IMO.

Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orch. - All My Yesterdays

Couldn't say it better. -
I must admit I like him best on his LPs with Stone Alliance and as a leader on PM Records - the latter have the Stone Alliance trio plus Jan Hammer in a raw jam session atmosphere. His energy was so high and direct at the time. I have one or two LPs he recorded with European sidemen at the time with a similar engaging tone. He was in town a few months ago, but after listening to several samples of his recent playing I decided not to go - his newer style just doesn't get me as much.

Now will that baggage fit in the trunk? -
The second song is "Upa Nequinho", indeed by Edu Lobo. That video must be from the tour when they passed through Frankfurt where I saw them. Thanks for posting! Bruno Carr was a really great drummer. Herbie always had good taste in selecting his bandmates, and was totally unprejudiced, or he wouldn't have hired Sharrock. Geez, I remember I really tried playing guitar like Sonny around that time...

Wow - I will get me a copy. That band, minus Ayers, was my second jazz concert ever, at age 17, so it's a must buy for me.

The Venexiana Box is highly recommended - great value, excellent singing, there is hardly a better ensemble currently on the scene. It's not overkill, they're so good you will want it all, anyway.

Great stuff! Please keep us updated about the film, and where to purchse a copy once it is finished!

Last October saw the (German) release of a new box set covering Nat Cole's entire career, 10 CDs and two DVDs and a large book, all in a LP-sized slipcase: Anybody here considering a purchase, any opinions? Some info and a tracklist is found here: http://nat-king-cole.musicnewshq.com/news/nat-king-cole-his-musical-autobiography

Chocolate was so sweet and hip - watching him dance with Machito's daughter Paula during the band's intermissions is a sight I will never forget, just as the sound of his trumpet will always ring in my head. R.I.P.

I have all of the Stewart/Holley Black & Blue sessions, all are enyoyable, especially the one where George Duvivier plays walking bass behind them! There is another album on PM Records, CD reissue on Delos, "Shut Yo Mouth" - a very appropriate title! The main difference between them is that Major Holley has a much lower singing voice and thus sings in unisons, while Slam Stewart sings an octave higher. When I first heard Slam's Stardust solo on the radio, I got me a copy of that LP immediately! There are many nice albums by both; one I fondly remember is "Dialogue" by Stewart with Bucky Pizzarelli (Stash). The only other bassist doing this that I know of is Avery Sharpe who sang along on one track of his Sunnyside CD "Unspoken Words" - "A major slam jam in a sharp(e)".

R.I.P. - heard the sad news over local radio and it really hit me. He was such a free spirit, true to himself. A great inspiration to stay free of cliché and follow my inner impulses, now that I want to give music making another chance. I'm really sorry I never had a chance to see him live .... I like the sentence in that Ottawa obituary, from his family, "Private memorial services will be held in Stuart, FL, Cherry Valley, NY and wherever you play a Paul Bley record.”

... yes, and considering the circumstances, i.e. all the instruments and equipment ariving late, all the more so. Let's cherish what we have from the Don Ellis Orchestra.

Now what's on the guy's mind? Does he think "Sh....., the chrome's so damn cold on my ass!" -
Spinning Georgie Fame's Poet in New York CD from 2000 right now, one of the gems of vocalese, in my book. And maybe his jazziest album to date. Originally conceived as a Benny Golson tribute, it's subject changed a bit, although it opens with Fame's dedication to Golson, Tuned In To You. Several Tadd Dameron tunes. New lyrics by Fame on improvised solos by Chet Baker and others. Great stuff - for a vocalese lover like me, at least. Recorded direct to two track, with Bob Malach, David Hazeltine, Peter Washington, and Louis Hayes providing excellent accompaniment. There is a mystery vocalist on some tracks - maybe Ben Sidran, who also produced. The Fame box set inspired me to check this out. Missed this one the first time around, but got a used copy autographed by Fame (!) for a price much lower than average on amazon. Recommended.

Oh yeah! Great pic! I think I have some Joe houston on the LP shelf - thought he was very good and precise, but could bear him for just two or three tracks.

What music did you get for a Christmas gift?
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous Music
As I said I'm glad I have it - remastering is excellent. There's a lot of R&B, Bluebeat etc., but his singing and the band's groove is always good - Chris Welch's booklet essay with many quotations from an extensive interview with Fame is a great read, covering a fascinating period in British pop history. Lots of stories about how he ran into trouble for his crossing over between rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, pop and soul - including being kicked out of a Basie tribute by Wynton Marsalis himself! As I see it, Germany's mailorder shops are sold out and cannot get any more copies of the CD version, some dealers may have copies in stock, though. No more stock at amazon.co.uk, either. No idea how many copies they had made, but it seems to be rather limited. If you don't like it you'll probably be able to resell at a good price. Back in my school days, all I got to hear was the singles - none of the EPs or LPs to be seen in local record shops, so it's like a trip back in time, listening to music I always wanted to hear but could not get at the time. There was a local kiosk selling the New Musical Express - I remember reading about so much music that looked interesting but was not played on German radio - but that's another story. -
What music did you get for a Christmas gift?
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, I did ask for it - and I'm glad I got it! But while we're at it: The best unexpected music related gift this year was a large volume about Arnold Schoenberg's life and works, with plenty of documents and photos - a good friend's mother wanted to dispose of it, she calls herself a music lover, but of different tastes, or whatever; when he noticed, he grabbed it and told her he knew somebody who would appreciate it. I do, and will be forever grateful, as it's a wonderful book! -
Duly noted for next year!

Great deal! My favourite acquisitions were all the Mosaic sets I got through the year: both Ellingtons, Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman, Oliver Nelson, Bob Brookmeyer Select; and a box set from JSP with early New Orleans stuff after a recommendation from Chuck Nessa of one of the sessions included. Since my wife prefers swing and earlier jazz, we have plenty to listen to, and she requested that I play authentic swing all day long during her upcoming sixtieth birthday in April - very happy to oblige!

Luckily I had talked my wife in getting me the Georgie Fame five CD box set - it is sold out already, only the 4 LP version (with MP3 download option of the bonus material) is still available. It is a lovingly made set, with a nice essay in the booklet, a set of postcards and a poster with Fame and a young Mick Jagger, and plenty of bonus material on each CD besides all the outtakes, singles, EPs and B-sides on the 5th CD - excellent remastering. Now what music did y'all find below the Christmas tree?

Seems that all links lead back here since the update - I will update the list, some day, maybe piece by piece .....
